Hey Cynwell,
Actually, I was interested in Osborne's "Illusion Systems" series of books since the 1980s. Not that I can afford to build and store any of those but I've always found stage illusions to be interesting reading material because of the deceptions and geometrics involved.
The magic shop that I went to when I was a kid didn't allow me to browse through those books then, and as a 10 year old schoolboy, I can't possibly afford one of those with my allowance. I know that they're out of print. Is there still, by any chance, that I can purchase them now? Doesn't matter if it's second hand though.
Thanks again! :)
Regards, Kelvin.

Hmmmm... Andrew Mayne recieved much flak after his "Face Lifter" effect (major stink bombs everywhere) - are his other marketed effects any better?
Kevin - January 25, 2005 07:32 AM (GMT)
Andrew's an awesome guy... and a freaking funny one, too. Facelifter, as well as some *certain* effects he made aren't that good, but don't let one rotten apple spoil the lot. His notes, such as MindFX, have such killer presentations and new takes on old plots, it just makes one cackle with glee. Burr.
Simple effects, BIG presentations. That's Andrew "Mayne" Harter for ya :D

If you have a local source for PVC pipes (plastic plumbing), you might be interested in Jim Gerrish's PVC Pipe Illusions for the REALLY, REALLY Cheap Illusionist. It shows how to make many standard Illusions out of this inexpensive building material so that maybe you'll stop dreaming about Illusions and make some you can actually use. It's on my web site.

yea, i just saw that on ur webbie! i think that's great, having illusions made so cheaply!
just a few questions though:
1. does Jim Gerrish have permission to use those illusions. (just wanna make sure its ethically correct)
2. if u have seen them, do the illusions look good or crude?
thanks!

Good questions! Most of the Illusions are very old and have passed into public domain. Others are brand new and are by Jim Gerrish, himself. Still others are a combination of old and new, and brought up to date by Jim Gerrish's new twists. Jim gives credit to the originators when they are known, but tracking them down is not always easy.
The Illusions look as good as you are willing to make them. If you make Illusions from the traditional wood and metal, they can look like junk or they can be almost pieces of art. Same here. It's not the material, it's the craftsmanship. Also, keep in mind that in many cases it is better that your Illusion not look TOO good, because then people think, "If I had the money to buy that box, I could do that, too!" The emphasis here is on the magic, not the prop.
