Title: Left Handers??

spikything - January 22, 2005 07:03 AM (GMT)
hey guys...i need ur advice...u c i m more comfortable handling cards in the lefthanded way...but den its like all those tutorial vids i have are taught using the right hand...so when it comes down 2 learning them...i do have some difficulties... any hints on how this can be overcome??

Brendan - January 22, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
hey.... im a lefty too and so are many other GREAT magicians like lee asher, bill malone, bone (flourisher) etc. i used to think shit... im a lefty and when i spread my cards people wont be able to see the pips... shit! some moves are like shit cant see pips and some methods of peeping/ cheating also cannt do. but ive overcome all these man. u dont have to worry if u are a lefthanded person (meaning u hold ya mechanics grip on the right hand). dontworry abt it. u can always do other it other way. use ya imagination. i remembered emailing lee asher abt wat he thinks of being left handed. he said something like... its great and actually better coz u can do some moves that right handers cant. im not too sure wat he is refering too. he said to experiment with it and u will get wat he means! so... keep playing with ya cards.

and about following intstructional vids, i dont find a prob with that. its like miror image. so... i think easier to follow lol.

spikything - January 22, 2005 07:30 AM (GMT)
hmm...nvr realised lee asher was a lefty until i saw him do the asher twist...
yea i agree on the mirror image part...but den i still have some problem...like when i got stealing pips - the betram change part (was quite a newbie..well still a newbie) its like i had a lot of problem learning it...in the end i juz had 2 learn it the right handed way...and i now do a tenkai using my right hand
and its like not all vids are mirror image...like when they teach flourishes...its usually tot from the performers perspective...like seen from the magicians eyes.... get wad i mean...arh...den i always get headache...haha
yea thx anyways

Brendan - January 22, 2005 09:12 AM (GMT)
yeah abt the "move" for betram change i practice both hands... normally i use left but sumtimes for other effects i use right... so advice to practice both. as for explanations for flourishes.. example in tudor's showoff vids, i ignore wat he is saying or when he say right hand, i think left hand lol... anyway his numbering of fingers is wrong at times... so.... hmm... lol..

u will get a hang of it after a while. all the best.

here is one lefty too...yup, sometimes d instructions are quite difficult to follow because all r from d righty view....but after sometime, i'll get used to it........i'm also a left-footed when playing soccer....seems tat i do everything with d left-side..hahaaha ^_^ ....but i bio girls with both of my eyes..... ^_^

Have u checked out any of Harwin's vids ??? he's a lefty too.. Damn smooth guy wif sybils !!

GordonLi - January 22, 2005 01:44 PM (GMT)
im not a lefty, but i guess lefty's might have the advantage as in able to duplicate in mirror image when watching a video? cos i have to turn facing away from the screen and turning my head around to see what's supposed to be done exactly... any1 else has this prob? lol :P but now with more angles like over the shoulder filming, there may be less of this... and more trouble for leftys, haha. :D

GordonLi - January 23, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
sadly, many things in the world are created for righties... lol :P

Moondust - January 23, 2005 06:19 PM (GMT)
I'm a lefty too, but I do most of the stuff like a right-handed guy EXCEPT for (sob sob!) flourishes.

I'm not into serious flourishing but a simple Sybil can only be done in left-hander's grip, and I can't do a goddamn fan unless it's in my lefty hand.

That's a serious handicap. I got to transfer from hand to hand even if I wanna incorporate something simple like a blind swivel cut in a card routine. A way of masking it is to flip the deck over, I guess. But ultimately, doing everything like a right handed person is more convenient. Maybe it's because I can't adapt well to the mirror-imaging thing like what you guys said...moreover, over-the-shoulders video instructions are a real pain!

Kevin - January 24, 2005 09:41 AM (GMT)
Well, Moon... use this presentation:

Do a simple flourish like a right-handed guy. Then, say to the spectators "well, since I'm a magician, I can actually transfer my mad skillz to the OTHER hand!". Do the Jackson 5 and finish :D

-Kev

Brendan - January 24, 2005 10:24 AM (GMT)
hehe.... i started off my sybils the right handed way... but magic left handed... thus i forced myself to lefty all the way.. and its great! :P

spikything - January 24, 2005 12:05 PM (GMT)

Des, ur a left hander??

Or u hold cards in ur left hand.

Please ge tit right ;)

Brendan - January 27, 2005 10:27 AM (GMT)
hehe yeah.. left handers hold the cards (mechanic grip) on the right hand and right hander holds the cards on the left hand.

as a left hander... sometimes i practice both hands... its kinda useful... i mean i do mainly lefty style but some i mean sometimes might go right.... it depends how/which hand my cards end up at. :P
