Title: *** Hot - Lecture Pending - Hot ***
Description: This is for YOU.

Shade - October 27, 2008 03:00 AM (GMT)
Hey guys (and gals - if any out there),

Over the past few years, we have had lectures and workshops on closeup and they have been extremely well received by the members (and non-members). We (MODs and all) would really like to thank the community for their continued - and at times almost relentless - support.

SMC is planning - at this stage, it's just a plan - to conduct a lecture at the end of the year on...

STAGE MAGIC

That's right folks - it's going to be all about stage work.

This is in line with keeping SMC as a general resource for the general magic community by and large. I hope that you will give us your feedback as to what you would like to see covered in this lecture. Though I can't promise that you'll see everything, we'll try to pick out the more popular or common ones.

We have already contacted an award winning local professional who has been performing stage magic locally as well as at conventions overseas (and even on overseas television). He has indicated his interest in working with us for this but we would like to gather feedback from you guys first - after all, this is FOR YOU.

Depending on the venue and the negotiations with the lecturer we might need to collect a nominal fee for the lecture. After all, it's not fair to ask somebody to share their life's work for free. But rest assured - you will get more than your money's worth; check our all our past events and you'll see I'm right.

So post away - tell us what you want. We'll do our best to make this happen.

JP?

It would be good if he could share some tips on how he goes on a world wide competition winning spree and how he seperates competition material from his coporate material.

MagicalLobo - October 27, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
Man, I'm new to stage magic so I don't know what I wanna learn. But I still look forward to the lecture.

ChiaWK - October 27, 2008 05:51 AM (GMT)
I'm interested as well.

ChanZiAn - October 30, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
Wah I'm interested, although i have no experience and knowledge about stage magic. Sounds fun!!

I hope he doesn't teach tricks that requires props or expensive set, otherwise it would be quite useless to most.

But from the response, it feels like SMC doesn't have that many people interested in stage magic. Will it still happen if no one indicates interest?

I also interested leh...

To ZiAn: Once we learn, we can tag-team to become a magic duo. You show the cleavage and I would "spike" my hair. :P

But I am seriously interested la.

ChanZiAn - October 30, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
Haha, ya man

Actually, honestly, I have been thinking about doing some stage magic, or to be specific, some magic on stage. Not so much with props or elaborate sets but like cards or mentalism or ropes...stuff like that.

I have a slight stage phobia. And because the stage is so big and i am so small, without and other props or sets, i always feel i will be unable to fully use the stage.

And also because i am so used to close up magic, being on stage, i imagine, would require more use of the whole body.

But i am quite excited about this. At least for the longest time we have been focusing on close up magic so much that the other genres feel a bit neglected. This is a good chance for the stage talents in SMC to show up. Good stuff!

Anyone else who might be interested, please put down your names, otherwise this thing might not happen in the end. It's really a good chance for stage performers to learn something and for stage newbies to explore a new area in magic.

I think Zian's right. Do indicate your interest if you are - we do need enough people who're interested before we can make this happen. The more people apply the lower the cost will be (since we do have to ensure that the performer doesn't do it for free).

Even if you're a close up performer (in my case, a close up card performer mostly) it's still good for you to be versed in stage craft and the nuances that go into it. I personally have an all cards stage act that I perform for certain occasions. Whether you're a stage/parlour/closeup person, I think you'll still benefit from a lecture like this.

I'm also interested but I am just a newbie to magic and this forum. I also have no experience and knowledge about stage magic.

Am I qualified to attend?

EVERYONE; ANYONE who is a part of SMC is allowed to join us for this. If you can post here, you can join us. :)

SMC is a resource for ALL magic enthusiasts and we welcome ALL who are interested.

And how're you ever going to get qualified to join anything if you don't join anything at all?

Shade
PS: That answer your question?

edwinlong - October 31, 2008 05:19 AM (GMT)
I'm interested too, count me in.

huangfufu - October 31, 2008 10:57 AM (GMT)
Cool :g:

Count Me in, i Want to know more... :)

Jlowhy - October 31, 2008 05:06 PM (GMT)
I'm definitely interested in gaining some insights into performing stage magic!

Lamadude - October 31, 2008 07:50 PM (GMT)
I too am interested!

Things that hopefully can be covered.
1. Sequencing of tricks
2. How to make use to magic stuff we already have to put up a show
3. The difference from close up magic, angle wise, audience management etc
4. Where to get resources?
5. How to get experience?
6. Music choice
7. Talk or not talk type of shows

That's all I can think of right now... if there are more ideas, I will definitely post. Well, you should have 2 types, one an introduction to stage magic and another that goes into more details into performance. maybe for magicians who have a routine already or something to perform with already. if stage magic is such a niche market, maybe there should be limited space for the more detailed workshop.

this lecture will be a nice re direction of my focus in magic!

i hope he can cover more on manipulation style stage magic rather than
stage illusions.

Maddened - November 1, 2008 05:27 AM (GMT)
Ok, count me in!

Zian - Stage fright is easy to dispel. Just close your eyes....

Itachi - November 2, 2008 12:42 PM (GMT)
Definately interested.

Things on my mind:-

1) Sequencing
2) Some stage effects
3) Maybe some presentation
4) Doves? (always seems to please)
5) And probably the non magic part of it
eg. the logistics and stuff behind a stage act

Lefty - November 2, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
Hmm... i would prefer the performer to talk about things like,
- what does a proper routine consist of
- fusion in magic e.g comedy, clown
- his/her experiences
- what to look out for if one wants to do it professionally

I actually dont really like the idea of very "sleighty" and "skill" based lecture, you can learn them anywhere, but experience is the thing that is really priceless.

Cheers!

Lamadude - November 3, 2008 08:42 AM (GMT)
oh ya...
another one would be assistant. Do we need them?

Shade - November 3, 2008 03:06 PM (GMT)
This is all very good guys; keep em coming. We'll have a confirmation soon on this. Even if we can't do it by this year, we'll surely have it by Jan.

Wow... A lecture on Stage Magic. This is great. Although I have Zero experince in Stage magic but I've definitely interested. I've always loved how Stage Magic has the ability to engage the masses.

There are many principles applied in stage that can also be applied in Close-up situations. I would love to know more on:

- How should the pacing of a stage act be like?
- Audience Management
- Engaging various senses of your audiences to elevate the magical experience
- Stage and Logistics management
- Time management
- How to sell you act without revealing too much

These are just some that strikes me. Probably a mini short performance would be nice too if it's not too much to ask... :D

Cheers
Jerome

Faris Magic Hands - November 7, 2008 01:34 PM (GMT)
Wow! Looking forward to the lecture. I hope it will cover different categories of stage magic such as manipulation, comedy and more. How to create a stage routine would also be good.

Really looking forward to it!

Shade - November 9, 2008 09:19 AM (GMT)
Thanks for all the feedback. We'll try to firm things up soon. Hope to make this a reality. :)

Stay tuned! If anyone has any more suggestions, do make them! We'll surely try to work them in!
