Description: Why NOT to buy from Penguin.
Kevin - January 25, 2005 07:20 AM (GMT)
The link here explains it all.Penguin has ripped of sooooo many other reputable magicians, it's not even funny to begin with. Usually, people ask me why I tell them NOT to order from Penguin, and I reply that they steal effects and market them under different names. People usually get the impression that this only applies to a few effects here and there, but you can SEE from the link that there's much more that has been done... MUCH more.
Help stop this tyranny. Spread the word around.

thanks kev for that. hope many ppl will stop ordering from penguin.
and EVEN if they only ripped ONE effect, i believe thats enuf to warantee a COMPLETE BOYCOTT of their products, considering they are selling it to a worldwide market. what more SO MANY!
dont order from penguin, dont reward them for such evil.

While we are at it, can i bash Magic Wand of Singapore as well for outright piracy?
They rip magic DVDs and sell copies for $50 each(!!). They are ripping off BOTH the inventor and the consumers.
So dun go Magic Wand...
....at least till they stop that.

I am resisting the urge to call the police and report him.

You've always been mighty outspoken about piracy and exposure issues :) so what's stopping you? B)
GordonLi - January 25, 2005 08:04 AM (GMT)
ok, i will tip the police.
[Ling] - January 25, 2005 08:09 AM (GMT)
Yeah, they both sucked totally. I never liked Penguin Magic or Magic Wand, so no loss for me. B)

Magic Wand is not the only shop to do that. Can you guys boycott them too? B)

what are the other shops that are involved in piracy and all that?
GordonLi - January 25, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
i try not to buy from any shops that supports piracy.
do tell us some other guilty shops, if its blatant piracy, i will report to police.
but sometimes its hard to boycott. like gician, i believe he sells some pirated magic tricks not endorsed by the originator as well? thing is, the quality is quite good, its cheap and he sells some good stuff too. haiz...

penguin vids are PURE EXPOSURE! ok, maybe not all... but OZ fumbles in certain tricks. wtf, its a vid, they shud retake it till perfection!
Winder - January 27, 2005 03:13 PM (GMT)
Hahaha ... Reshoot of each video = money for them, they have to pay Oz for his time man ~
but newbie just wanna get something fast, so they don't really pay attention if oz slips or whatever.

orghh.. ya lol really can get a lots of ideas from penguin.. i like doing that haha.. but i think they do not flash like nobody business la.. maybe cos u all are magicians.. u know the wat sleights are being used by looking at the hand movement and position ma.. u all know the gimmicks.. and everything.. so typical to detect any slight flashings... haha.. but to laymen... they will be simply blown away by most of their tricks..
or maybe im wrong  if really so.. tell me which vid got flash one leh.. i wanna take a look.. hah..
GordonLi - January 27, 2005 03:16 PM (GMT)
thats the thing with overcommercialisation of magic, ppl just wanna buy the most visual, the latest, the coolest effect to hit the magic market. fewer ppl working on their basid foundations or perfecting them... :(
Winder - January 27, 2005 03:20 PM (GMT)
Truthfully, i rather get a DVD than to get their Instant downloads. It's a waste of money man.
I used to support penguin alot till i met Cynwell, he's our PENGUIN :X Oops :X.
GordonLi - January 27, 2005 03:42 PM (GMT)
yep. u get more for ur $ buying dvds (but they earn less on dvds, lol).
although, i for some reasons prefer books to dvds... (strange?)

yea, online sites ought to exercise more responsiblity considering the fact that they are catering to a growing international market.
Aloy - January 27, 2005 04:34 PM (GMT)
Ethics aside, i think pengiun's instant downloads are really not worth the money. If you get a good DVD, you learn all the moves needed to execute almost 90% of all the instant dowload effects, at a fraction of the price.
Plus the teaching in instant download is often lacking in details. It is sometimes just an exposure of the secrets than really teaching the finer points of performing the effects.
Not good enough.
illusionist - January 27, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
Somehow books are good resource to look int but ha I hate to read unless I have no other choices.. So second best option is DVD.. Dvd go into more detail on the effect , the angels and stuff to look out for perfroming the effect. So I think DVD is a better buy then instant download.. Try to spend your money on something worth getting.. One more thing lol.. Try to to get anything new when its on the magic market listen to review or see the demo of the product( Demo can be trusted at times too haiz talking from experenice) :D
GordonLi - January 28, 2005 08:49 AM (GMT)
haha, thats exactly how i feel too. i kinda prefer books more. i guess its because i prefer a library of books than DVDs, or stuff in my com. something more physical, tangible and can be read almost anywhere (but maybe not anytime).
but of course, dvds provide visual aid and allows learning of magic at a quicker pace. (for me, its 3CM as i couldnt understand from books, or rather, nv thought it was good until i saw it on dvd). so its 2nd choice for me too!
