Title: Misdirection
cyngapore - September 21, 2004 06:02 PM (GMT)
Have you ever find it so hard to misdirect? Have you had spectators burn ur hand and never look up, wells heres some tips that might help u.
When doing misdirection always keep the "move" away from ur body. Lets take for example palming cards. Dun put ur hands near ur body. Keep it away from ur body as this would not bring unnessary attention to the move. Come on everyone would think that u are hiding something when u keep ur hands really close to ur body.
Secondly Just when you are about to execute a move, glanced down to look at whatever you are holding and look up immediately and talk to the spectator. This would bring the attention away from ur hands. Lets take for example classic palming a coin. When u put a coin to another hand, you will never look at the whole entire motion as ur body knows where ur hands are. So just glancing down would just show u are looking at the coin and just do the fake transfer. Nobody catches that most of the time.
Lastly advice on burns....
If u have to exectue something and ur spectator is burning ur hand... look at the objects that you are holding... look and and wait for them to look at you and continue ur patter. Spectators look up becoz of courtesy and COURTESy is something that you can take advantage off.
Hope this thread would thread would help u guys.
Enjoy

excellent tips. I think the keeping quiet and waiting for your spec to "unburn" your hands one is very good.
Another thing i found useful is that movement attact attention. Use that by moving something else or not moving what u wanna misdirect.

I'm really bad at misdirecting, my friends every ask me to go directly to the trick and stop talking. :(
Have you guys met such situation? What will you do?
This post has given me more ideas on handling people. Thanks...

Yes, friends has a thing for doing things like that. Because they are used to you as the person rather than the person who can do incredible things.
I would smile and sayi AM doing the trick now just i have to explain things properly, then ask GENTLY if perhaps THEY would like to do the trick instead.
Hahah....as u can see, i like to "threaten" them...

I get that lots of time as well, but just continue with the patter, they wun bother.... they will wait for the trick. Sooner or later they will just let u show them the whole trick and would not bother u to jump to the point. Another way of misdirection would be to do the trick silently until when there is a secret move to me done, look up and call their name..... Lets for example u are showing an ambitious card trick and u want to do a pass to bring the card to the top, you can just look up and call their name eg... Jack, do you remember the card that you pick, when u are talking just do the move people will always look at the person who calls their name... Hope this might help you :)

Yep thats true when you do somthing like the pass just call soemone name and the whole crowd will look at that person lol. One more things to add. Don't keep tqalking and talking and don't do anything while you talk to your sepc do the moves as well if possible move you hand gesture a bit so it covers here and there of your little sleights. :)
