Title: Working On A New Trick.. Tips Pls.
Description: mayb this trick can help in ur routines

tygnehc123 - January 29, 2005 12:20 PM (GMT)
i met some probs in the midst of creating a new trick.... hope u guys can help me..
u know rite.. when doing two card monte or tricks that require audience to hold on to a card.. some people.. especially hecklers will turn over the face down card before i finish everything even when instructions or misdirection that are supposed to stop them from doing so is given... u all sometimes oso got these prob rite? arghh.. my sch got a lot of these kind of people.. anyway.. mayb its becos of my presentation.. so i am working a LaMe trick to handle these people..

pls dun say i lame hoh.. jus a simple technique.. ill simply write these words on a blank card.. like " pls do not flip over the card" or " maybe casual a bit.. like" Dun flip over me leh.." lame lame  then ill purposely switch the card they are holdin with this lame card using sleights.. so if they unexpectedly turn over the card in the middle of a routine.. im sure all audience will b laughing in amazement..mayb not :o .. but in order to make this successful and convincing that i did not anticipate the turn over.. for eg if i say sth like Dun turn over the cards! u dare u turn la..(sarcastic type) even if they turn over they noe u hav planned it cos i sounded sarcastic.. so it ll not be nice even their card has changed into the 'lame' card..

so jus a qn here.. wat should i do to act as if i dunno they will turn over.. but i wan them to turn over!.. lol.. confusing.. sth like i intentionally drop some cards on the floor or say things like hold on ar... err.. got some screwing ups here.. i go arrange my deck hoh(in the middle of the routine) then go behind pillar and wait.. hoping they will turn the card they are holding on to.. then FREAKing them. but the prob now is.. even i do all these things.. some obedient audience will not turn over the card.. as im planning to work this on everybody and not jus hecklers..(im certain heckers will flip over even i dun lure them..hah..)so wat to do or say for them to do so.. sorrrie qn a bit long..

i think u shud just focus on how to prevent them from turning over a card u do not want them to (and its not really that hard...). i had the problem with 2CM too, but kinda sorted that out using psychology and the way i patter. so yea, work on it!

Justy - January 29, 2005 01:02 PM (GMT)
haha.. i created a a trick specially for hecklers.. however.. magician's would know how its done right away.haha

tygnehc123 - January 29, 2005 01:24 PM (GMT)
err.. i know one can focus on psychology to prevent them but isnt it better to do it using the way ihav mentioned,..heehe.. it sort of shows the real quality of magician.. instead of the usual normal way.. must try something special ma.. makes urself humorous oso..haha.. justy u create wat trick? can share?

i think i agree with Gordie on this one. While there will be specs that will be plain outright uncooperative, they should be the exception rather than the case.
If you are having problem getting them to follow your instructions, learning to use subtilities to control them is more important i guess.
I'm no expert in this so someone else give him some tips or directions.

Maybe after understanding how to get them to do what you tell them, it will be easier to understand how to get them to do something you DIDN'T tell them too, which feels like, for me at least, a level up in the psychology.

2 cents...

Speaking of hecklers... if any of you have a lot of guts, and wanted to just be really, really, really evil to one particular heckler, or if you just didn't like the guy because he played chess (no offence to chess players around here), you know where to look and what to perform. *ahem*IC*ahem*Yeah

As for the original question, why not use reverse psychology? "Please, for the love of god and all that is good and holy, don't turn over the card, or you will incur the wrath of god and all that is good and holy, and become more popular with the girls in school"

But then some people may KNOW about reverse psychology, and so then you can apply reverse psychology on REVERSE psychology and use reverse reverse psychology to turn around what they think they know and use it to your ultimate advantage. "Please, for the love of god, turn over the damn card, or you will lead a sexually inactive life for the next 55 years", and when THEY apply THEIR reverse psychology theory they'll think you don't want them to turn over the card in their hand, and of course, not wanting to risk a sexually inactive life for the next 55 years, they WILL turn it over and then you can laugh at their personal insecurities and tell nasty fart jokes.

But then there are the guys who DO know about reverse reverse psychology and that's when... that's when you spray them in the face with pepper spray. No, it won't get them to turn over the card in their hand, but those guys just really piss me off. Pssh.

I'm not helping much, am I.

For my 2CM(s), I asked the audience to press the cards on some table tops, now it's sort of hard to them to filp it fast to take a peep, and they do have contact with the cards. (like the original version where the cards at cliped between the fingers etc -- so this is somewhat similar...)

For me, this works.

Hecklers?! Ask them to screw themselves, then! :P

Ever heard the saying 'the forbidden fruit is most sweet'? Tell them 'you cannot turn over the card' and they feel and urge to turn it over. Mention that 'they shouldn't turn over the card just yet' however, and you've got them trained like tigers at a circus.

I.E, what I said (without the unnecessary bullshit).

if that guy is a heckler, i suggest u do self working tricks without the use of gimmicks or u can create your own trick like me.. without the use of sleight of hand at all..This is good because you don't even need to patter, he can stare at your hands all the time and the bloody tricks just works..haha. it has killed all of the hecklers i've encounted before when i use this... haha.. its kinda lame to a magician who does loads of sleight of hand but useful to someone like me who does have much to patter about at times.. haha..

i agrree with gordie... its to do with proper patter... and good misdirection...

also... common.. if u gonna do 2CM.. choose ya audience wisely lol.... u know the type of people that will go against u... so dont do that trick on them. also,... u can ask them to grip the cards in a diff way too... rather than pinching u can ask them thumb it.

but all in all.. work on proper patter... once in a blue moon... someone will turn over the cards... like when u tell them watch i just switch ya cards... and switch it back again... (go watch blaine's street magic.. the one he did on the fat black man).. he was trying to challenge blaine.. but blaine made him look like a fool :)

when u do magic.. dont let the audience take control coz u are in control... so work on it. if u cant... do it to eassier spectators... :P

Navarrone - January 29, 2005 04:11 PM (GMT)

OMG! His right! Whgy haven't I thought of that before?

GordonLi - January 30, 2005 04:07 AM (GMT)
yes, either use that or do tricks without audience participation.

for 2CM, u can table the card. and even if they question "is that really the XXX?", you can take the opportunity to do TC and use the new card to turn over the tabled card, and turn over the card in ur hand as u answer "no, its not. neither is this what u think it is".

magicalee - February 3, 2005 04:49 PM (GMT)
i have no problem.

remember always use a finger and casually point into their face, telling them"without looking at the card, wad do u think ur card is", this case, they will follow ur finger movement and looking at u, thinking of their card. the say something like"will u impress if ace of spade is on top bla bla", then ask them to turn over.
