Title: Staging It!
Description: A Stage Lecture by Jeremy Pei
Shade - November 27, 2008 04:21 AM (GMT)
Hey guys,
This is a follow up post to the feedback you guys provided from the LECTURE ON STAGE MAGIC.
I have spoken with Jeremy Pei and he very kindly indicated interest in holding this lecture for us. Those of you who do shows would know that to conduct a lecture (2 - 3 hours) would result in a serious loss of income and the opportunity cost to the performer is relatively high - ie. the most he can earn at one lecture in 3 hours is about $400 (assuming he's getting the standard rate). ONE show is easily $400 for 1 hour. He is doing this purely out of goodwill and we really appreciate it!
Based on the feedback gathered from the last post, I have compiled them into a list and emailed them to Jeremy. He will try to touch on some (if not all) the areas of interests but I told him that it is his discretion as the lecturer to decide what he will cover - it's only fair.
But either way, I think in your attendance you could always ask him yourself and clarify any doubts you might have on stage magic. :)
For those of you who do not know who Jeremy is, do check out his biography on his website:
JEREMY PEIWe're still working out the chinks and trying our best to accomodate Jeremy's busy work schedule. As of now, the venue is more or less confirmed - it will be in the Ulu Pandan Community Club (where we held the last Lecture by Bob Chua). A Projector and screen will be present to help provide better viewing.
To be fair to the lecturer, we will be collecting a fee of about
$20 - $30 per person. The cost will depend on the number of attendees really - the more people attending, it lower the cost will be. I hope we can get your support on this! We might add $2-$3 for refreshments. As always SMC is a FREE resource and we do not make any profit from this - the full amount of your fee goes directly to the performer/lecturer.
Jeremy's an experienced performer and has been in the magic industry in Singapore for a long time. There's much we could all learn from his experience.
If you are interested (and can manage about $30... ;P), PLEASE put your name down here. This is not an obligation to attend; it is an indication of your interest and gives us a good feel of the number of people who might turn up. We can finalise the pricing and confirm everything with Jeremy.
Those of you who've been with SMC for awhile know that when we set out to accomplish something, we always do our best to make it happen. You won't be disappointed. :)

PS: Feel free to add any feedback you might have or suggestions you might want to make as well. :)

LOL Justin - it was hilarious the way you screwed up the dates for the LAST one. hahaha.
Anyway, I'm still waiting for Jeremy's response. I believe he's overseas right now so the details of the lecture'll have to wait until he's home in Singapore before we can work anything out. :P

As promised, here is the list I sent to Jeremy with regard to the content of the lecture. He has said that he would customise a lecture based on the points I have given him below:
Magical aspect
1. Demonstrate some stage effects/ put up a mini show
2. Stage presentation vs Close up (differences and how to create a stage presentation)
3. How to make use of magic stuff that one already has to put up a show (routining effects for a stage show)
4. Where to get resources for stage acts?
a. Illusion plans
b. Prop Builders
c. Ideas
5. Difference between a competition act and a commercial act
6. Dove workers – what is involved in working with doves/livestock?
Logistical/Non-magical aspect
1. Sequence of effects – how to decide and construct a stage act
2. The concepts and ideas that go into the design of any stage act
3. Music
a. Types of suitable music
b. How to acquire licenses
c. Where/how to get original music
4. What elements are recommended in a stage routine?
a. Fusion in magic – comedy, clown?
b. Talking vs silent act
c. Balloons?
d. Kids shows vs Adult shows? Mixture of both?
5. General structure of a stage act in terms of:
a. Audience management
b. Angles
c. Stage and logistics management
d. Time management/ pacing of act
6. As a business:
a. Logistics and finance
b. Start up cost?
c. How to get experience
d. How to get started in the business (what to look out for if one intends to do this professionally)
e. How to promote one’s act without revealing too much
7. Sharing your own experiences as a stage performer - challenges when performing in venues of different settings and how one might adapt one’s act accordingly
Jeremy's been really kind and has given me a list of dates to work with but at the moment the everything is tentative, but we're trying to arrange for it to be on the 30 December from 7 to 10pm. That's a Tuesday. No confirmations on that yet; but everything will be confirmed by next week.
Cost is estimated to be $25 per person. Jeremy will also be selling some of his material, dvds and even props. So you might want to start saving up for those! :)
We will be opening invitations to members from IBM as well as SAM, but rest assured you guys will get your places, so do indicate your attendance early as soon as we release the confirmed information next week.

Ok guys, things are more or less a GO for this. At the moment the two critical things left to confirm are:
1) VENUE room availability at Ulu Pandan CC. Last time I checked it should be ok, but I just want a final confirmation.
2) Date. This largely is now tied up with the venue. If (1) is a go, this is fixed. If (1) is not available at this date, then it's another re-shuffle.
Let's keep our fingers crossed - I should be able to confirm everything by tomorrow evening. Hopefully! :D
