It sounds cliche, but the answer to your question is
Practice, Practice, Practice & Practice Somemore.
I don't really understand your definition of how to go about doing it. Are u referring to someone teaching you 1 to 1 or do you mean suggestions to which books or DVDs are good.
Most of us got our lessons from Books & DVDs. I highly doubt the effectiveness of in-house teaching from fellow magicians when you can get it straight from the Masters through mentioned resources.

Well i was kinda hopping for 1 to 1 i've learnt some trick(magic) from DVD but i didnt like it because you've got to rewind and play, rewind and play...
1 to 1 also offer something else.... comments
i've thought i've master the a trick but to my horror i just did it the wrong way than got to relearn everything again.. it ain't easy when ur hands kinda move on their own after a while..
as for flourishes i know next to nothing about it thus i was hopping that someone could pass on some basic knowledge to me
ps: i think the only flourish i know is like the 1 hand cut??

Doing things wrong and relearning is part of a learning process haha. (This reminds me of my Amath which i will miss greatly) :off:
As for flourishes, I was into it for quite awhile. I do showoff sometimes as when you do a flourish, you really do show that you are good at cards and have been doing cards for sometime. It is like a "Hello! No kidding, I'm the card master." to the audience.
Check out :
http://www.youtube.com/user/cardshark88http://www.thecuso.info/There are several flourish tutorialist. You have to find them. You should get the basics from cardshark88. The Cuso web has great stuff.

Most of us are self-taught. If majority of the people can learn from books and DVDs, I'm sure you can too.
If you don't even bother to press the buttons on your remote to rewind, why bother to practise? I think practising is more difficult than pressing the buttons on your remote control.
And I doubt anyone would pass you knowledge on how to flourish, everyone has put in effort to learn, they wouldn't part with it easily. And don't bother to pay $25 to learn a trick, you can learn many more from a DVD/ book.
What I suggest you can do is to practise first. Magicians are special breeds, if they don't know you, they probably won't share with you. Come to the SMC gathering, show them some stuff and I'm sure the guys will give you pointers. Just don't expect them to teach you their effects.
Good luck and learn to enjoy practising.

I couldnt agree more with magicdow, i was contemplating how to put the message across in a less blatant way but i guess the bottom line is, if you don't make effort to self-teach and self-practice, don't expect anyone to teach you anything.
Magic society is rather different from other art and i guess, we all believe that certain degree of conservatism is necessary to prevent excess exposure and to protect magic.
Make some effort and do drop by our gatherings, im sure some seniors would be able to give you some pointers. I recall when i started few months back, i practiced my Fanning and my 1 handed fan was the one giving me problems. But during the gathering, Itachi looked at my fanning a couple of times and instantly pointed out why i was having trouble.
What im trying to say is, do your part make an effort to learn and come to gathering with an open mind. Last thing anyone needs is a leech i guess.

LOL guess ur're right... maybe i'll start some easy one like top-pop?? or the card spinning thingy?? lol!! thanks again!
i shall keep on practising

Hi, just asking for fanning, how to make it smooth? mine still come in bits and pieces. Also i cant open a fan as big as the video has shown. Lastly sometimes when i did nicely, i only barely spread half the deck, the rest is not even spread out.
Can someone enlighten me?

I guess you can try newer cards. Like freshly opened bicycle cards. Make sure its air cushion or has some kind of finishing. Those paper cards will not fan at all.
Or you can try fanning powder. It makes the cards kinda clumpy together, but thats how it makes them fan nice. It'll spread themselves out very very evenly.

Or learn the pressure fan. You will be able to fan cards even if they are slightly older.

It's hard for a beginner to do a full fan spread. Try fanning powder and you will be good in a few days time. :)

so where can i get the powder? ellusionist dont seem to carry it.
I tried new decks like the ghost deck, new rider 808, massa, pastal, tragic royal, and hell lots of other decks. But none seems to work.
Currently i am using a slightly old rider 808 and a new massa deck, i think i just need to practice more.

Yep, lots of practice.
I still remember the time when i still can't 1-hand fan or thumb fan well. Can't do 1-hand shuffle or Spring.
But as time goes by, feeling will come and you will be able to grab hold of that feeling for that certain move and slowly do it without giving attention to it. =)
jleexd - May 8, 2010 01:46 AM (GMT)
Keep practicing, you will get it soon, and it will be easier after that.
