Description: JC Sum & Magic Babe
Shade - February 10, 2009 01:11 PM (GMT)
For those who don't know, JC Sum and Ning were invited to go the the Southern England Magic Convention in UK.
A friend of mine just sent me a few links on the review of the acts there and they include JC and Ning.
Here're the links.
If you want to just skip past all the other reviews on the other acts, just do a CTRL+F and search for "JC" or "NING" though I'd recommend you read all of it - some are really quite interesting.

Actually, I don't think the poster was being mean - there were a few mean ones, but this one isn't. He was just stating facts: he expected stage illusions but didn't get it. I think if we went to a movie expecting a horror movie and ended up with a comedy we'd be pissed too. :P At least I would be!
It could be the advertising there that made the hype a little too much and rasied the expectations of the crowd. From what I gather, there were logistical reasons why JC and Ning didn't do the illusions they were supposed to. I don't have the full story, so I can't comment too much.

I think there was some misunderstanding. This is what Ning replied on Magic Cafe

Hi everyone
Appreciate the feedback. I understand that there's some political strife going on between the SEMC and BlackPool groups, but it's not my intention or interest to participate in that. Make love, not war.
SEMC was certainly an experience for me, the English are hospitable and I met many nice people there. iTV came down as well to interview us, and personally, I had lots of fun in the UK because I made many friends and got in touch with folks I already know. Mark (thanks for pointing out this thread to me) & the Twins are absolutely hilarious... =)
Anyways. Just so that there is absolutely no misunderstanding however, I'd like to take the time to state here that J C & I were NOT booked to do an illusion show at all, for SEMC. J C was there to do a lecture, and me to do my one gal show on stage. On the gala night, J C merely opened the show for me; and the organisers knew they got me for my 20 min one gal show which they saw on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KS9RqyiouE
I'm sorry that somehow, it's assumed that we're bringing our Ultimate Magic show over from Singapore. If we were booked by the SEMC organisers to do our illusion show, we'd have done so accordingly as we've performed overseas extensively, and shipped our equipment and illusions over. So, yes, J C & I were doing what we were booked to do... once again, my sincerest apologies if there was any miscommunication but for J C & I, it was very clear between us and the organizers since we talked about this for over a year now.
Having said all that, I'd like to thank all the people who said very nice things to J C & I after the show, as well as, for making me feel right at home this being my first time at UK and all =)
Best regards from Singapore, Ning |

Thanks for the snippet Bernard - I think it's probably a case of miscommunication.

I think these were definitely due to mis-communication. I was following about the convention because i heard about it from a friend. J C Sum was apparently never booked for performance, according to him from his blog:

| She was booked a year ago for her One Gal Show to be featured in the convention and as she needed someone to carry her luggage, I was invited to give a lecture. We did later find out that a handful of people were disappointed because they assumed we were presenting our full illusion show… but this was never the case… at least, not for this year. |
If you are interested to read about the convention and see some pictures, J C Sum's blog has got quite a comprehensive coverage. Personally I'm still proud that a local singaporean born and bred has headlined an international magic convention. I personally feel that is a major breakthrough.

I have to agree it was a great achievement to be headlining the show and if they were only booked to do the one gal show then they delivered. However is that show strong enough to headline a major new convention in the UK?
It seems the organisers did some poor programming in that case. I'm not sure this hasn't done their reputation in England more harm than good but I don't feel its the fault of the magicians.
If people google Ning and JC I'm sure they'll hear all about the mega illusions as I understand these guys advertise them selves that way. Why wouldn't convention atendees expect that kind of show?
Surely the magicians should have followed the advertising and hype and done a little to play it down if they felt it was going the wrong way or raising expectations falsely?
I feel many magicians were looking forward to headline act and felt very let down by by the "quality" on offer
