I'd say it depends on your current level of techniques.
For books, most people will recommend the older books to start you off on the basics, like Royal Road to Card Magic, Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, Expert at the Card table, etc etc.
These are very good books and they are all relatively inexpensive, but they are also very dated so they are very wordy and can be difficult to read.
I recently received one volumn of Card College and I really really liked it. It's very detailed and extensive, and all the sleights covered are real stuff that you can use. However, it is rather expensive and you might need to know certain basics first.

If you are relatively new, I would suggest starting dvd and videos, someone else may be more familiar with which video is better to start with. I know Micheal Ammar's Amazing Secrets of Card Magic is good for an absolute beginner.

Just to share my experience with magic.... I owned about 30 DVDs on magic just e first month I've started my hobby! (yes, Im a DVD fanatic!!) Have been praticing with cards like there's no tmr! hee... (and yes, My work damn free one!)

Now, Can do a few false shuffles, passes, top changes.. etc...

But the reason Y i want to find a complete set of card encyclopedia is precisely wat u mentioned... tt i wanna learn from the basic up... somehow also dun wanna spent $$$ on repeated handlings on different DVDs!

hi!

Wow! 30 DVDs is ALOT of material! Perhaps if you tell us what you have we can give you better advice.

Meanwhile, don't just focus on sleights, pick up effects that you want to learn and you will learn the required sleights for the effect. Much more effective in my opinion.

What type of a performer do you intend to be? what kind of effects interest you?

Meanwhile, I do recommand books, like Card College if you want to learn. It covers tons of ground and has many effects to go along with it.

Daryl's EOCS is mainly just sleights with a few effects to go along. So it depends on what you are looking out for.

Damn that's a lot of video man! Your job gives you time AND money, wanna trade jobs? :)

I haven't seen Daryl's Encylcopedia of Card Sleights but it's all good reviews i've heard.
I have Card College volumn 4 and there's a lot a lot of material in there. If cards are your thing, that's probably good for you.

And i agree with alex as well, focusing on sleights will give you a lot of techniques, but finding and learning the effects and presentations will give you magic.

I don't really do cards. But I've seen some of the vols in Daryl's Encylcopedia of Card Sleights. I think this is quite a good buy.

His explanation is pretty clear and there's a lot of stuff in it. Most of them are sleights with few routines. Learning is easy from this set. I don't think you'll need everythng in it but it sure does give you a large selection to choose from. If you're thinking of buying, why not buy some vols you think you need first before committing the rest of the vols?

Heard a lot about Card College, all good reviews.
