Title: Smc Session 3/09
Description: 1st Session of 2009!
AdrianLee - March 2, 2009 05:52 PM (GMT)
Hello to all fellow SMCians,
Based on the positive response from the recent gathering, we are thinking of adding a new event to the SMC calendar. This series of events will be termed as SMC Sessions and we're still deliberating the frequency of such an event.
Next, let me move on to explain what an SMC Session is all about. Basically it is a gathering where SMCians can perform their routines/effects in a small group setting, after which a discussion will be facilitated by the SMC Moderators assigned to each of the groups. The idea of this activity is to take it one step further than just performing (which was done during the recent gathering) and generate greater learning through focused discussion and sharing. This way, everyone will be able to help one another (including themselves) improve through the process of performance, observation, feedback and active discussion.
For a start, we are thinking of opening up a maximum of 12 slots (average 3-4 participants per group) for the 1st installment of this event. Reason for the slot limitation is to keep the Session productive and focused in a small group setting. Details of the event are as such:
Date: 21 March 2009 (Saturday)
Time: 1400 or 1500 onwards (To be confirmed)
Venue: Toa Payoh Central Delifrance (Next to the Library)
Cost: Only the cost of a drink at delifrance, or a meal, if you're hungry. :P
Expectations: Every participant should be adequately prepared to perform a short routine not exceeding 3 effects or a longer effect with at least 3 phases.
*Note: The SMC Moderators are just there to assist as learning facilitators. They are not instructors or teachers in any capacity.
Please sign up for the very first SMC Session below. Remember, slots are limited!

If the response and reviews for this very first Session are positive, we will definitely consider making this a regular installment just like the current SMC Gatherings.
If you enjoyed and have benefited from our past gatherings (especially if you have performed during the most recent gathering), this is the chance to take the next step in improving your magic!
Feel free to direct any queries regarding the SMC Session to any of the mods here in this thread.

Actually Ulu Pandan CC is situated in the vicinity of Buona Vista MRT station (not Boon Lay MRT Station). After all, Singapore is only approximately 42 km from east to west, so it can't be THAT west.
Anyway, it's a free choice, no equivoque, no force, no magician's choice... We will definitely try to make it worth your while for those who choose to participate.

Great job guys... Keep those numbers coming in. This is a good opportunity to sit down and session so don't hesitate anymore.
Jumbo and MagicalLobo, where do you all stay? Maybe I can suggest to you all on how can get there. Ulu Pandan CC is actually near Holland Village so it's quite central.
Cheers
Jerome

I live in Bedok. I have to take the MRT. Nevermind, I will see how the list goes. Those who are more convenient to go should be on the list. If the last few spots are not filled up then I will take up.
chizzielamer - March 4, 2009 09:11 AM (GMT)
hey...i live in YISHUN.... :P which is really quite far.
But MRT is a nice and quiet place to rest ( and the ride for me is less than 1hr), so why not?
Jumbo - March 4, 2009 12:52 PM (GMT)
Hougang. I'll try to go but I must dig the map and find my way there. I'm a road idiot (:

Hi all, I received some PMs about this gathering. So i will try to answer some FAQs:
1) What is the gathering going to be like?
Depending on the number of participants, we will finalise the format of that days activities. But we assure you it will be fun and worth your while. And also we are sure will take something home with u, beyond wad you can learn frm DVDs.
2) Where is Ulu Pandan Community Club?
Ulu pandan is really not as ulu as the name suggests. It is a 5-7 mins walk from Buona Vista MRT. It is very close to Ghim Moh Market, and quite close to Holland Village. A quick search online will let you know where it is exactly. I hope that the location will not put some people off. This place is choosen because we can obtain a proper room for this purpose and it will allow more privacy as compared to Delifrance at Toa Payoh. I believe most people will appreciate this.
3) Can i go if i have nothing to perform?
This is a special gathering in SMC, first of its kind, and is catered specially for people who wants to improve through performance. Therefore, we are urging all those keen on coming to prepare something to perform. 3 effects, or a routine with 3 phase is really not that difficult. A simple ACR already has 4-6 phases. Of course, having said that, i hope not everyone will do a ACR at this gathering.
You don't necessarily have to learn something new for this gathering. I understand that it is quite close by, and not much time left to learn something new. You can jus put 3 tricks that you always perform together. You may still get new insights on tricks that you think you are already very good at. Others may offer you presentation ideas, mayb comment about your body language, talk about motivation for certain sleights at certain timing. Stuff like that. As long as you are open to suggestions, I believe this gathering will be of great help.
Hope this answers some of your qns.

Hi.
It's a pity you cannot join us this time around chizzielamer. Maybe next time. MagicalLobo, good to see that you can make it.
For the rest of you. i have a BIG announcement to make. This is for those who are coming and for those who are thinking about coming.
Because of logistic complication, we will not be able to hold this gathering at Ulu Pandan CC. It would have been a ideal place with the comfort and privacy. Pity... Maybe next time.
Thus, we will be shifting our gathering back to Toa Payoh Central Delifrance
(next to the big library). PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS, TO PREVENT LANDING IN THE WRONG LOCATION ON THAT DAY.
I have changed the details on the main page as well.
So for those who thinks that Ulu Pandan is too far, this is your chance to come by now as it is now at Toa Payoh. So step forward and put your names down if you have been hesitant previously!!!!!
Thank you!

Ok everyone,
Seeing as the group is so small, we'll probably do a mass 'lecture' style type of grouping. Do be prepared with some material - this is NOT a casual gathering: those of you who were at the chalet in 07 and attended the Royal Road to Card Magic session will know that we get down and dirty with the nook and crannies. Just ask anyone who was there - it was more than just a simple 'show and tell'.
The objective of the session is clear - we're all here to learn and improve. You can bring work in progress and get feedback; you can show off your existing routines and see if anyone has suggestions for you to improve them; you can bring a 'broken' sleight and get somebody to help you 'fix' it.
Please do NOT pop by casually for this one if you haven't put your name down. We want you to mentally commit to this before you attend to ensure you come prepared. So do sign up if you plan to attend; you still have a little time. We'll be closing 'registrations' on 20th March so there'll be no 'last minute' takers.
Hope to see you there! :)
