Any smart card magician will know your answer for your question. But thats not the point in the effect, the audience know its a free selection, that's it.
The 3 phase "card" change is great. Because changing the back seems "normal", then bang, the whole deck becomes your card, so great impact.
I feel that there is a lot of work needed for this illusion, but if it ends up as a great magic, i say, why not?
