Title: True Astonishment By Paul Harris

hikaru - March 16, 2009 02:42 AM (GMT)
Hi all,

Anyone has TA by Paul Harris? I have read lots of wonderful reviews on it on foreign websites. I am looking to diverisfy as I have always been doing cards. TA seems to cover a wide array and probably can last me for the rest of the year or more. Furthermore it also has a nice packaging.

Just like to know what local magicians think of it. The price is steep(USD300 before shipping) but it is for 9 dvds and a load of gimmicks in a wooden box set(thus shipping will cost a bomb too!!!). It will be a huge investment, thus I want to be completely sure before buying it.

hi

i m also considering weather to buy TA also i feel that 300 is also very steep haha... but with props and gimmicks and 9 DVDs worth of stuff can be tempting for anyone to leap in...

but reading the reviews i don't know how accurate they are... i have been considering it since they put a promo up for it in PM before the release and i m still considering it now... still got no major breakthrough to tip me to the buying side...

peace

I have considered buying TA too. But I dropped the idea because it was expensive and I don't think I need it first.

I will just give a general feedback on TA after doing much research on it.
Firstly, I trust Paul Harris material and so far I have not read a bad review on his material yet.

Secondly, if you are comparing price and the materials, the materials are definitely far worth more than the price. I have seen some of the material performed by Lu Chen, some were simple but definitely fooled me the first time, others were just amazing with new ideas and add ons.

Thirdly, Paul Harris is one of the most innovative and inventive minds in magic. Supposed this is one of the history making release, how could a serious student of magic not own one of it. (I will definitely buy it when I have extra cash to spare).

And, it features so many top pros inventors and interviews with champion magicians.

Get it from Ning and if postage is too expensive, consider self collection.

All I can say is, if you will USE high impact, top pro magic, GET IT.

T.A is definitely worth the price you are paying. However you may discover not all the material suit your style and personality.

Some of the effects Lu Chen performed on the Taiwanese Big Brother variety show is from T.A. Of course he souped it up with his own presentation, patter and of course his godly sleights which make the effects even more magical.

You can watch them here

T.A will definitely add a few more tricks to your repertoire as it did for me.

Agree. I learn alot of new concept and handling in the DVD. Even you don find it useful now but i believe you can apply it in other area in your magic in the future.

And yes. It really worth every single cents ( In my opinion)

How would it be possible for me to get it now when Ellusionist has stopped shipping to singapore?

Is it possible that ellusionist will be shipping to singapore sooner or later ?

I believe Magic Boutique carries the True Astonishment set too.

I agree with Paul Harris's philosophy on magic, but his style is really not my stuff. I still prefer books to DVD, but the advantage is also, besides the updated stuff, the gimmicks that come with his TA set.

There are other online shops that carries T.A too i.e. Ning's Magic Boutique, TheMagicHall and Penguin Magic and etc...

p/s: You seem determined on getting E's products.

Hi all,

I have gotten my TA sometime back. But due to my busy schedule recently, I have not finish watching yet. Only up to disc 4 at this point. But I will like to say the stuff Paul Harris taught is really good! Some of them do not really suits me but most are just pure visual and impactful!

For eg. Bazarr Shrinkage(one of the hidden cookies) I have done it on my wife(who is very skeptical and sort of a heckler because of our relationship) but her jaws still dropped after seeing it. Having a Regular size card change into a mini card right there and then in your own hand without cover is just not something you see everyday.
This trick should be in previous Paul Harris DVD though.

I hope to discover my surprises as I go along and maybe I can give a more thorough review.
I will recommend anyone who can fork out with the cash to get the TA set.

cheers,
hikaru

Is it really that good? As in, are the stuff practical to do, like is it resetable and non bulk?

Practicality will depends if the effect suits your personality and style. Just like some thinks gecko is great and some others doesn't.

Some of the tricks in T.A. worked well for me. Some will require me to practice alot more before i can perform them.

9 DVDs worth of effects, there are bound to be some that suits you.

Yeah I would guess so. But are the materials radically different from what has already been released?

One thing that hinders me from buying is that the effects need alot of set up, and has no reset.

And also, are there alot of card effects?

mudbuddha - May 25, 2009 08:07 AM (GMT)
There is quite a fair bit of card tricks in there. I'd believe you'd be able to know if it's a card trick when you read the effect description off from the online sites.

Quite unfortunately, the effects ain't quite as impromptu as ACR or 2 CM. Most effects would require some set up and preparation. But some of them are really quite simple as i could perform them almost immediately after learning them.

I remembered hearing from somewhere that we should not perform the same effect twice as the audience would not be enjoying your performance as they'd be trying to find out how you did your effect. So resetting isn't really a big issue.

As for whether the materials as radically new, this is something i cannot answer you as i have not seen some of the first release version. But according to the descriptions, it seems some are re-worked for easier handling.

But all in all, i really think T.A. is a pretty decent investment for most people. At least it added a couple of more tricks to my measly and miserable repertoire which i can amuse/amaze/entertain my friends with.

I just finished the 9 disc set and I've only one word for it. Incredible!

Firstly, the wooden box is truly a classic way of keeping the 9 disc. The box has a secret locking mechanism too

Secondly, while watching the tricks, "I thought I've seen and know them". But I'm wrong! Paul Harris is really a genius, not only the tricks are easy to perform, they are entertaining.

Lastly, if you ask me whether $300 for this set is worth it.. I'd say yes. It going to be a limited edition thing

renguard - August 27, 2009 01:01 PM (GMT)
hi may i know how much your spent in total for the T.A? as in adding in the shipping cost all those to sg

I've purchased the TA set, i really think its worth the price

The tricks are one of a kind, and purchasing it at 400 odd bucks, it amounts to 40 odd bucks per dvd (9 of them in all), so I will like to think of it as buying $40++ a dvd.

They are quite a lot of card tricks, in fact most of them are. The only down side is that if you are looking for a trick that performs fast, ie something like WOW2, or Extreme burn, TA prob does not have it. The other slight down side is that if you are quite a newbie, you prob need to muster your foundation well before you proceed on to other tricks that are furnished.

Dun get me wrong though. I feel that most of the tricks involved require a buildup, and probably some showmanship, explanation and misdirection, and if done optimally, the effect could be true astonishment, as the name suggests.

I did it on my close friends, and so far, the effect is quite satisfying. I really love my set so much that I could not bare to use the gimmicks. Just wanted to keep the set as it is. :)
