Title: Types Of Cigarette
Description: For Cigar manipulation

LoyaLover - March 18, 2009 02:46 AM (GMT)
Firstly, i would like to say that i did do a search and i know that there are two exisiting topics on Cig magic. One by Zi An under the close up magic section which was locked because there was already another one.

The other one used to be under close up but got shifted to stage magic.

I don't know much about stage magic, but i definately seen more close up magic with cigarette than on stage. Further more i think its "Logical" for cigarette tricks to be considered close up or even more as close up than for stage performances.

Im not asking this in relevance to any tricks or routines, but i was wonderng what kind of Cigarette do you use? Does the brand matter? I think they differ in size, length and "hardness". Do you guys usually buy props? And if they are props, are they the ones you can still puff with?

This is quite a wierd question... almost all cigarettes are standard size, so why would you need to know what kind we are using? There is no bridge size cig, or Jumbo cig etc.

Obviously, props are generally "unsmokable" (if there is ever such a word), unless there is one I didn't know.

Brands of course matters... ask any smokers, they would tell you Marlboro is still the best-tasting cigarettes. :P

Winston lights can fight, right Jerome? Some of my friends like dunhil, some like mild seven, some like viceroy. Some like texas ice.

Some like butterful, some like drum.

If you want to learn cigarette magic, and you're not a smoker, my advice is don't. One pack of cigarette is going to be 12 bucks soon, and i heard it might even go up to 15 bucks. Ouch.

Er.. I think we're going :off: already... Better be careful before our RSM ban us haha...

Nonetheless, I totally agree with ZiAn, Winston Lights is power...

Ok back to Wei Liang's questions:

"what kind of Cigarette do you use?"
If you're talking about cigarette manipulation, I believe the standard cigarette you buy from our local shops will suffice. However, if you're talking about the infamouns Tom Mullica's cigarette act, those are a tad different.

"Does the brand matter? I think they differ in size, length and "hardness"
If you're smoking Brand Matters definitely but in terms of manipulation, as long as you're using standard cigarette, it'll be fine. Length and size wise, just don't use those slim type cigarettes that many women like to smoke and don't use filterless cigarettes. In terms of hardness, they're all about the same but Slydini does teach you how to condition a cigarette for some effect which I can't remember.

"Do you guys usually buy props? And if they are props, are they the ones you can still puff with?"
The only cigarette prop I know is the cigarette that Tom Mullica uses but then again those are not available for sale. For his, as seen in his act, it can be smoked.

I hope I was able to answer some of your questions... :)

Cheers
Jerome

Pardon me, Same goes to the type of coins question i asked. I don't know, thats pretty much why im asking. Why don't i know? I don't smoke. Why don't i assume that its all the same? Apparently some resources talked about the type. Anyway! I admit not the smartest question so pardon me.

Props i guess they are pretty much unsmokable. So happens that i found on the puff out stuff. Looks real enough to me. :P

Thats pretty much what i wanted to know. Thanks!

Wow, I am quite sorry on not able to have good answers for your questions, because as I am a smoker for many years and I don't know what a non-smoker don't knows.... really.

I have been asked about the taste, the price and the packaging of cigarettes by non-smokers, but for which I don't think are in anyway connected to magic, so I don't suppose you are asking for those.

Seriously, even if you don't smoke, I should think you know how a cigarette is like. No non-smoker friends ever ask me about the "physical attributes" of a cigarette, and to me all cigarettes are the same in that sense... except perhaps Vriginia Slim (super long and slim) and Davidorff (longer and thicker). But the latter 2 are the exceptions rather the the norm.

It never occur to me that a Marlboro could be better for manipulation than a Winton Lights. After all, they are both tobacco leaves warpped by a peice of paper and connected to a filter. That's why it sounds wierd to me.

I'm no expert on cigarettes props, and as I say, there might be one that can be smoked which I am not aware of.

Pardon me, YES i know how a cigarette is like. YES it sounds like a dumb question to me even when i asked it. Pardon me if in anyway if it sounded...rude or anything. The tone of voice can often be misunderstood when these things are said online.

When you need to do cigarette effects, in my opinion a non filter cigarette will be better choice because you do not like to produce it by holding the wrong end. For non smoker, a dummy cigarette will last you a long time and cost you a fraction of today's price.

Cigarettes and coins are basically the same. When you use a Kennedy, Liberty, Johnson, Morgan or whatever types of coin, it a matter of getting use to it.

Most US card magician uses Bikes instead of Aladdin because the quality is better and a common brand in the States. Some magicians will use Tally Ho, Hoyles. Its a matter of choice again.

If a spectator will to give you a deck of cards, coins or cigarette which you are unfamiliar with; to do a effect. You just cannot say sorry I have not work with them before.

During one of my show, I was given a mini deck of card to perform and you have to do it rather than lose your creditability as a magician. To the lay persons you are supposed to perform miracles.
