Title: Off The Table
muscleaxl - April 3, 2009 04:27 AM (GMT)
Recommendations for any books or DVDs that teaches "no-table" card effects? Or at least (I hate to say it) "street magic" kind of effects, not necessarily all cards.
My friend asked me that day and besides "Born to Perform", I can't think of any....

On the Spot with Gregory Wilson is a good one ^_^
No cards though :P

Errm... Cultural XChange 1 & 2 ?
Mostly done standing or in the spec's hands. But very knuckle-busting

Is your friend starting out? If your friend has the patience to work through a book, he can try Royal Road to Card Magic. It has a few very nice pieces and some of the table stuff can be easily adapted for stand-up situations.

Quite a beginner, and not much patience.
That's why I asked for DVD.

Hmmm, not much patience eah.
But I sure hope he/she is willing to practise.

Crash Course from Ellusionist is good then ^_^
Actually Brad's teaching is quite nice.

He is not lazy to practice... just not enough patience to read through a book. He actually learned a few effects from E's HTDSM.
To query: Though Cultural Exchange has no card effects?
Alexander - April 4, 2009 10:39 AM (GMT)
Cultural Exchange has card magic. Some are quite gutsy though. They are short pieces.
How about David Stone's Real Secrets? Its pretty good mix of card magic and coins too.

Nope, I would not recommend Real Secrets of Magic by David Stone. It sure has great tricks but I am sure it does not suit "quite a beginner".
In fact I would not recommend it unless:
1. You have spare money to spend and want to buy it for the tricks
2. You are a professional restaurant magician (The DVD mainly caters to this group as it provides info on being a pro restaurant magician and the tricks are short and visual, several require gimmicks that you will need to buy.
The techniques employed by David Stone in several tricks are quite intermediate and advanced too.
TBMIS, maybe your friend will just have to buy different kinds of DVD to learn. There is an ULTIMATE BEGINNER DVD by Penguin. It features basic tricks that a person with no knowledge of magic can do. Basically, a DVD that gives you a few tricks up the sleeves and introduction to magic.
Or he can get Joshua Jay's Complete Course? it has a dvd and if he doesnt want to read other tricks he will at least have some to perform.

If you're not looking for pure cards, try the DVD set: Bob Does Hospitality Act 1, 2 & 3. He has a good mixture of cards and others (including sponge rabbits and coins). In the DVD, he teaches it on the table, but includes tutorial for every single effect, how to do it off the table as well. Not too difficult and good for close-up/ walk around.

hi there,
I believe you can come up with routines of your own for street performance.
On the table, it means you need to spread, to do table cuts and shuffling, to lay out packets of cards...etc. Well, spread in your hands, and shuffle in your hand. If you need your spectator to cut, cut it in his hand.
Street magic performance has 3 characteristics:
1. There is no table
2. It has to be visual
3. U have to make the presentation quick
That's my 2 cents worth.
regards.
