Hello all! I am very new to magic, and this forum. I saw on the other thread about posting video "of explanation", which feels like a no-no. This got me wondering if there is a place here for newbies to post videos of self (myself) performing a trick? It is not exposure, unless I mess up the trick somehow. Since I am learning the tricks by myself, I am looking for others for criticisms and suggestions. I wonder if there is place somewhere in this forum for this? Or does this feel too much like "giving free lessons"?
Regards,
Jim
HI Jim,
A lot of people like to post videos online - here as well as overseas. Sometimes, to show new effects, new moves or simply their "skill" in performing some killer sleights or moves. Videos can be both a good thing as well as a bad thing. Good, because it can capture everything that is done but also a bad thing because it only captures it from only a single point of view. Also, without any reaction from your audience (in this case a video-recorder) you honestly wouldn't really know how good or bad that particular effect is..
Many performers perform in the comfort of their homes and bedrooms for their video-cameras. Good and strong effects are captured and posted online, but sometimes in reality these effects cannot be performed under the scutiny of live audiences.
My advice will be to master 3-5 tricks. (master in the sense of being able to perform as well as being able to give a good presentation of the effect) than perform it to your family or friends, or at least perform to the peeps that you can trust and will not heckle you, and than slowly learn from there.
If you are really interested, do check out the Events and Meet-up section for dates that the peeps from SMC try to meet-up. It will be at times like these that together with other magicians can share and learn from each other.
Hope this piece of information helps.
Cheers
