Title: Se-ed Project
Description: Calling volunteer magi & balloonists

Shade - June 25, 2009 08:50 AM (GMT)
Date: 1st August 2009, Saturday
Time: 1530 noon- 1830pm
Venue: SMU, School of Infosystems and Campus Green

Dear SMC,

We have been contacted by the chairperson who is heading the SE-ed project this year - it's a community project that is aimed at promoting social enterprise in youths.

Singapore Magic Circle has long support charity events (even though we know the past few years have been scarce since the person in charge of charities bailed) and have always lent a hand whenever we could to put in our fair share of community service.

We are, however aware of the many event companies who look at us as a FREE source of magical entertainment and hence we have taken to screening the various requests for charity before we post them. This is to prevent our members from being unfairly taken advantage of (believe me this has happened SO many times! Just ask around!)

A little about hte SE-ed Project from the organisers:
"SE-ed Project (Social Enterprise e-development) is a new Social Enterprise (SE) initiative by a group of volunteers in YMCA of Singapore. A social enterprise is basically a business that serves a social cause or aim. This can take the form of Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) producing merchandise as well as services to support people with special needs.

We aim to create an online shopping portal to pull together these SEs/ NPOs to a common platform and market their goods and services to the public, in particular youth.

To launch this online shopping portal, we will be organizing a bazaar entitled "The SEarch Party". This bazaar will be an opportunity to showcase SEs and their various social causes to the public in a fun and meaningful way. The bazaar will include stalls set up by SEs, alongside youth projects and online blog shops. Fringe events including stage performances, games booths, sports tournaments and busking booths will also be staged to make the entire bazaar an event not to be missed!"

The event starts at 12pm and ends at 2030pm. However, after discussion with the organisers, we felt that it made sense for us to commit between the times of 1530 - 1830h (as stated at the top). This is the timeslot where they have invited special needs individuals (at-risked youths and intellectually disabled) to the event (the beneficiaries of the event) and it would make it more meaningful for us as performers.

The organisers have also agreed to provide meals (if needed), materials (for balloon twisters) and a certificate of appreciation which would be useful to your resume (if you're a student especially - go claim CIP or something).

Take this as a good chance to put your practice into PRACTISE and make a difference in the process. 1st of August is plenty of time to hone your skills to the level you can take into the real world.

This is what a forum community is all about - reaching out to the community at its best. No other forum can - and SMC is all about being the difference.

I hope to see as many of you make it as possible!

Hi, love to help out, to gain some field experience. However i am scared that i am not up to standard, as i have just started doing cards tricks. Also got only 1 ACR to perform, along with some tricks from the ultragaff deck and the hovering card trick. If end of the month i got pay i will get the hummer card and exteme burn.

So seniors should people like me and gambit join?

jeromefang - June 25, 2009 04:38 PM (GMT)
1st Aug sounds good. I'm in.. :)

o0oKIRAo0o, feel free to put your name down. You do not need to know a big bag of tricks in order to this. A handful of effects will be good enough. I normally only just do my Coin Across the entire time.

We're doing walk-around so you'll be roaming around and mingling so your audiences will be different all the time. I encourage those who like to get real life experience to put your name down. This gives you the push and encouragement to get into action. You'll love the experience, trust me... :D

Axl, it's been sometime since I've seen our TBMIS in action. Why so modest suddenly? Haha...

Cheers
Jerome

Kira, prepare perhaps a set of 3 tricks routined together. Do something that you're comfortable and familiar with. If you can, a 2nd set of 3 will be good too so that you can do a bit of rotation. Pick material that you are familiar with already and avoid learning something new to perform for the event because it might take a while to get it worked out. Best of luck!

ChiaWK - June 26, 2009 11:33 AM (GMT)
Hello,

I'm mainly learning manipulation but I would love to try strolling magic so I'm actively considering this.

Can I check if we will have something 'official' from the organizer, like clothing or badges to identify us?

Sir, they are looking for walk around magician and Ballooonists? or stage? or???

Shade - June 28, 2009 04:53 AM (GMT)
MAD: It's a strolling event. You want to do balloons? I believe we need balloonists...

ChiaWK: I'm sure they'll provide tags for us to help identify us. Either way, it doesn't matter - we've worked events both with and without tags. I think you should be equipped to deal with it either way.

Keep it coming guys - the more people sign up, the easier it is for everyone: we can split the load.

They expect a turnout of up to 4000 people over the time period they specified, the bulk of which would be during our timeslot: expect a crowd.

Shade
PS: Take this chance to put your craft to work. We have a nice gathering before the event, so you might want to bring your material to the gathering and discuss it with the guys there - it will surely be beneficial to you!

jeromefang - June 28, 2009 05:18 AM (GMT)
MAD: We will definitely need ballonist so you're highly encouraged to come and do all the twisting... :)

Eric: I see that you're joining us. That's fantastic. It's really been a long time since we've met up. This will indeed a fantastic opportunity to catch up. I look forward to seeing you... ^_^

Cheers
Jerome

Hello, I just put my name, if God will, I will be there.

Just a word of caution to all those that placed you name down. If you have indicated that you are going down to perform at this event, please ensure that you make a commitment to do down on that day. This is because Shade will have to send in your name, or at least the number of people going down, to the organisers, so if the numbers don't tally on that day, it will reflect very badly on SMC.

Nevertheless, it is indeed a good sign that so many people are stepping forward to do something for SMC and for the community. So keep the numbers coming.

Zi An

Those who are participating will need to provide me with some details as well.

Confirmed attendees, do email to me the following:

1) SMC Nickname
2) Your full name
3) NRIC

This is for the certificates the organisers will be preparing for you.

Thanks!

Shade

Hi Eric. It's been some time since St John...

Eric - June 29, 2009 08:20 AM (GMT)
Hi Axl,

Yes, quite a while. Looking forward to see you guys. Again, for charity, you and Jeremy never miss it.

see you,
eric

Hello Ocean

I notice you havent posted an introduction of yourself.
I think you should since we'll all be working together on that day!

Jeremy? Did you mean Jerome?

Hi Alexandra and all,
Haha yah, haven't posted an introduction of myself since.
I am Walter. Got interested in magic 4-5 years back. That was when I first saw a magic dealer in pasar malam. However, have not been praticing in this art for quite some time due to work commitment. Hope to see you guys then. Cheers!

Shade - July 5, 2009 05:29 AM (GMT)
So far I've only received 5 emails/messages from confirmed participants.

Do email me your particulars as stated in my previous post once you have made confirmation. I will need your confirmed attendance to prepare the schedule. The organisers will also need those particulars to prepare your certificates!

Dear all,

I will need to finalise the numbers for this event soon; currently, the following people have confirmed their attendance at the event:

1) Eric
2) MagicalLobo
3) MrCowboy
4) Alexander
5) ChiaWK
6) kia619
7) TimothyLim
8) Jasper
9) Ocean
10) =Gambit=
11) M.A.D.
12) Jlowhy

A BIG THANKS for making an early commitment - it'll make my job much easier.

I will put up a rotation schedule soon so you can just come at your time slot to perform. I don't expect you guys to be there for all 3 hours - but of course you're more than welcome to perform the entire 3 hour slot! :)

If you're still contemplating if you should turn up for this - stop THINKING about it: ACT ON IT. Magic doesn't just happen by itself - you have to make it happen!

We will be closing the thread soon - if you haven't sent me your details yet, please do so by 23 July (Thursday) LATEST!

Shade
PS: I forgot to get your contact numbers - for those who have emailed me your particulars, do email me your contact number!

Hi all. I would like to join in the event too! Able to do balloon and magic. Hope to see u guys soon.

VisualShoxx - July 21, 2009 08:50 AM (GMT)
One question: Is there any dresscode for performers?

Alexander - July 21, 2009 04:01 PM (GMT)
While I personally do not think there is a need for a dress code, but I firmly belief that a magician has to stand out from the rest, so I would not wear overly too causal and look like some one from the street doing magic.

Just my personal opinion
