Title: Opening Magic

Hello all, I've been thinking of how do you start your magic besides using cards?

I thought it will be something new if you can start your close-up magic or routine with something like rubberbands, money, coins, pen or some daily objects around you before you go on to do some cards routine.

I feel some may feel "oh,another card trick?select a card, then he find my card etc" though there are many amazing effct one can do with card besides those select a card routine etc. But i thought magic can be made more realistic with some objects around us would be a pretty good opener magic.

I do card magic too but i thought add in some other objects will give the performance more variety?

Any magic that does not deal with cards and the magic speaks for you & introduces you as a magician will be nice in my own opinion.

so I'll appreciate if anyone can share any good opener non-card magic?thanks alot =)

Why not try some mentalism tricks? some of those tricks involve only the use off words. so you practically start off speaking

I thought the ID is a very good piece of non-conventional card magic, if you have great patter to it of course.

Maybe you should review tricks like grey elephant in denmark under the dvd fundamentalism by david eldgride. There are many variations of this sort of tricks in the market

I think if you're a seasoned performer, mentalism could POTENTIALLY be a good opening act. Having said that, I don't think that there are many in Singapore who could pull it off.

I'd suggest simple coin or spongeball productions. You could also introduce "rubberbands" and do a CMH. Its less of a "challenge to your audience.

One patter Lu Chen like to use is how "Real magic doesn't require big props. Let's try something with daily objects."

I thought that can be a good opening.

Yes good suggestion, this effect may seem simple but real pros can pull it off very well. Just take Max Maven's performance in "World's Greatest Magic".

I think that how you open really depends on your entire routine as a whole as well. The entire routine has to flow so even if you do have an awesome opening act but can't follow with the rest of your routine then that whole magical experience may get lost somewhere, in which case you may be better off starting with something else.

End of the day i guess what i'm saying is maybe instead of thinking about what's an awesome opener in general, you consider what would be an awesome opener for an entire routine?

I can't agree more with bmt. an opening act is indeed serves an "introduction". It should follow a smooth flow of patter into ur sequencing of tricks down the line. It would be added advantage if you could relate ideas back and forth during your show
