rtdmark - February 1, 2010 04:48 PM (GMT)
Hey guys if i am doing a performance and i need to wear a blazer. Where do u recommend i find a blazer?.

Make sure that you really need a blazer, don't waste money on one if you will not wear one often.
You might also want to ask around and see if you can borrow one.
If you are sure you want to buy one, consider if you want a more business-y look or a more modern sleek look. For the former, there are a lot of cheap places around - but G2000 is probably a safe choice. For a modern look, you easily can find blazers/jackets at Topman/Zara.

Personally i think a blazer would be good....it gives you a more formal look without looking overly formal and would be fitting for almost any occasions.
Besides that, it gives you space for you to carry your stuff i.e. decks, sharpies. If you are doing effects which requires you to do loading, it provides good concealment too.
As for where to buy blazers, as what gordon have mentioned. G200 is a good choice to buy the formal looking business type blazers. Zara or Topman is also another place you can look at but they are likely to cost over a hundred bucks. Of course they are pretty universal in all occasions.
Alternatively you can look at U2 or even shops in bugis village for cheaper options. Especially those in Bugis village, they have those trendy type which make you look like one of those jap or korean pop idols.

I recently just got a blazer from this shop call POA at Marina Square. A that time they are having storewide 20% which i think its still available now.
Prices are below 200.
Cutting wise, the blazers they have are more of a casual, slim, trendy type but they do have 1 or 2 formal type tho.
Material wise, its average but definitely better than what you find in Far East Shopping centre or Bugis Street.
Topman's blazer is above 200 which I find not worth it for that kind of material and brand. Zara is good but a little too formal. As for G2000, its the cheapest during their sales if you are looking for the business formal type.
But of course, there are still many other factors to consider like the type of colour, number of pockets u need, length of sleeves etc.
So after all these, I guess its TIME FOR SHOPPING! :D

I agree with Gordon that you should make sure before hand if you really need a blazer. Not so much on whether you are going to wear it often in the future, but because with a Blazer you tend to have more expectations from the audience.
You definately establish yourself as a "professional" and you might want to make sure that you are really of that standard. Many at times if it doesn't suit your style of performance, it would be werid and in fact it lowers your magic/ status if you don't live up to it.
On the other hand, when you are casual, with long sleeves shirt that you can tuck up the sleeves (or even just a long sleeve t-shirt is formal enough for certain events), it makes your magic more relatable and many times you LOOK like you are doing magic.
Its a simple concept that that we see everywhere. When you see a person with a blazer, you know he is a magician and you know he's gonna do good magic. Yet when you see a magician in reasonably smart shirt and pants, you don't quite know what to expect and when you do good magic, its a bonus, its a suprise, its a wow.
Point being, IMO only wear a blazer if you MUST, otherwise, avoid blazer at all times? :X

I beg to differ LoyaLover's point about "avoid blazer at all time". I remember someone from SMC during an event saying that performers should wear a blazer so as to somehow "differentiate" yourself from the audience. Any audience can also wear a long/short sleeve shirt/tshirt. Thus the performer should at least wear something that can diffferentiate himself by simply wearing a blazer. Of course, I am not saying that the performer must wear a swallowtail tuxedo with a shirt in it as though he is performing for cirque de soleil. Probably the most casual can be simply a blazer with a t shirt in it.
Also, I feel that if I were to be an audience of a magic performance, I would feel that the magician has either no respect or no initiative to dress and behave himself like one.
Most importantly, I am not trying to debate. Just typing out how I feel.
Cheers! =)

Both LoyaLover and VisualShoxx have their points.
But i guess it's all about your style. The clothes you wear depends on your style and character you want to portray.
It's like asking yourself whose style you prefer... i.e. David Blaine (street wear, T-shirt and jeans), Criss Angel ( Goth styled) or David Copperfield (Prince Charming) or Lu Chen (fashionable and hip).
Blazer or not...as long as you can make yourself standout from the crowd, it believe anything is fine.
You can even do your magic in your boxers in the streets if you dare and the law allows :D That way nobody can suspect you hiding anything in your sleeves or pockets. :P

Wa. You say until like that. You that time perform at SMU never wear blazer lor! HAHAHAHAHA. NO RESPECT! :P
As mudbuddha puts it, I guess it IS up to personal style to a certain extend. I know I was saying too much when i say avoid blazer. lol.

I like the suits at Benjamin Barker at Marina Square. A bit more modern and slick and suited for Asian physique. There is another shop in Marina Square as well (either one floor above or below) Benjamin Barkers that also sell suits suited to the Asian physique -- quite different from European style, which has the coat-torso length about 2 inch longer for the same suit size... at least that is what I was told.
