Your question is too broad to answer.
It is like asking how to practice for football.
Maybe you should specified what sleights you are practising.

Most general answer will be Practice!
Then ask someone close to you to see how smooth you perform it and if he can see any flaw from all types of angles.

Sometimes what i do is very time consuming but i do it when there is a difficult trick.
1 week on the trick.
divide the tricks into parts and practice it.
On weekends, practice the whole thing.
Of course, i do this sometimes when i can nail the trick. Hope this helps :D

I see...
That's great. Different people, different learning style and method.
Good to share and try out each and every one. Then find 1 which suit our lifestyle the best. =)
For hand-sleights, again, i will practice hard till it's smooth.
For maths/theory tricks, only way is to remember. =/
Then again, practice the style of presentation too.
All from the view of an novice. =/

Sorry for not being too specific , what I mean is that :
You may have sleight of hand not fully learned but you wish to revise on the pevious tricks so that they will not rust
What would you do ?
Divide each day into hours and focus on some a days ?
Or revise one sleight each day ?

I wouldn't allocate time to specially practice a sleight/trick. I have decks all around the house and I grab them whenever I am free. I practice any sleights/tricks that I have not mastered as well as previous tricks to prevent them from 'rusting'.
xpeinx - May 18, 2010 01:07 AM (GMT)
Oh yea, something i forgot to add-on
Sometimes when the sleights are too hard, I will just keep trying to 90% perfect. But there are times i can't attain do it, I'll just change to new sleights and tricks then go back to the old tricks again to try it out.
Works well for me for most of the time in both Flourishing and D&D tricks.

Ok thank , I will try these method , hope it would bring me to a new level , kind of struck now
xpeinx - May 21, 2010 06:24 AM (GMT)
Haha xiaofeng.
Keep trying out, but best is style/ways of your own timing and lifestyle. =)
All the best to you!

I feel that not only practising it helps but bringing what u have practiced in performance will really helps. Cause through performance that's where u learn things that you, yourself can't see.
So 1st practice your routine, sleights until u're familarise then bring it out and perform to people around you.
xpeinx - June 3, 2010 08:18 AM (GMT)
Talking about performance, I think I should agree too.
Cause Magic, you can't practice by yourself. Sooner or later you have to show others.
Since we practice at First person view, we don't know if flaw are shown or something.

You can try to use a camera to film what you are doing and play back that way you can " see" what the spectator will see from their view.

I think the best is to get a few close friends to perform magic to bah. Anyway to try out the misdirection and maybe some cover of the sleights you eventually have to take it out to the world to show real people. Friends are always the best.
If you fool them XD, if you don't fool them you can get comments on how to improve. Win win situation =)

Im sure many cardists practice their sleights whenever possible.
I suggest you get a deck for your computer room, and whenever your hands are free, such as when you're watching videos, grab the deck and play with it.
Just holding a deck doing repititive false shuffles gives you confidence in handling cards over time.

Someone once taught me that the best and easiest way for your hands to get used to having a pack of cards in them is to hold them while you are sitting down watching tv, reading or just relaxing.
After 15-20 mins or so, your mind will sub-consciously forget that you are even holding the deck. This way, it will feel like an extension of your hand. ;)
It works pretty well for me! Hope some of you can try it and eventually assist in your hands' comfort. :P

I think ultimately it depends on what works for each individual.
Some people learn best while they relax and watch television and at the same time practise cards in their hands.
However some people learn even better when they sit in 1 corner of their room and focus exactly on what every action counts.
That is, although I do both of the above at various times of the day =))
Melinda_Chong - July 22, 2010 04:40 AM (GMT)
Hi Clementt, I couldn't agree less. Guess practising magic is somewhat similar to revising for an examination, except of course, it's more pleasure compared to necessity! ;)
Some people need to lock themselves in their room, away from the whole world in order for them to be able to absorb their materials into their head.
Whereas some others prefer to mingle with fellow mates and pop by libraries or fast-food outlets to help each other. :D
At the end of the day, whether or not it is magic or studies, you can't run away from putting a certain amount of time and effort in PRACTISE! :g:

While practising is important, I feel that one must practise right.
I had experiences before when I practice sleights and just never get it, only to find out that my method was wrong.
You should make it a point to really understand your sleights or tricks before you start practising.
nickypower - July 30, 2010 04:56 AM (GMT)
yup, I agree it's not easy. There are lots of stuff to take note while practising. Like the patter, timing etc. It really makes a difference in the actual performance!

However, recently i kind of figured out what worked for me.
1. To master a sleight/effect/routine, I cannot just sit there and play around with it for hours. Rather, 30 mins of focus on it beats hours of random fiddling with the cards.
2. To improve my overall handling of cards/coins, I do see improvement if I have them in my hands while doing other leisure stuff like watching tv. You sort of do random things with the deck and it makes it more fluid when you handle cards for any purpose.
Just my 2 cents on this topic =)

I'm currently practising my Revolution Cut done with my left hand whilst doing revision, writing and flipping pages of my book with my right! Hehe! B)
As for moves requiring both hands, practising when watching TV works wonders for me!

Well now I kind of get what type of method for praticing , as I have lots of homework and revision to me done during the day , I would spent the night when watching television to pratice some tricks and during weekend I would spend maybe half to a hour ( depending ) to pratice while listening to music , I find it helps alot more , sometime you would follow the beat of the rythmn when doing a trick and adjusting the pace to find a suitable one :)
What do you all think about it ?

Hi I suggest that while you are watching tv, or doing things like that when your hand is free, You can get a deck and work on the skill or trick. It work for me. Whenever I am watching my favourite show on TV or youtube, my eye will be on the screen, but my hand will be on the deck. :D
