Title: Girl Magic
Description: What magic is suitable for girl?

What magic is suitable for girl? I am not sure to focus on what kind of magic. Are cards tricks really suitable for a girl?
VisualShoxx - June 28, 2010 04:37 AM (GMT)
Well it depends? If the girl like to see fanciful things with cards, and you are able to do tricks with flourishes then it will be suitable for the girl?
Or rather, sponge ball/rabbits are a "cuter" type of magic which i believe would be able to capture a girl's attention. But still, it depends. No definite answer for this question I guess.

I mean girls should learn what kind of magic?
VisualShoxx - June 28, 2010 02:42 PM (GMT)
Oh alright. I apologize then since your questions could be either way.

I don't think there is any difference in a Female magician or a Male one. She can learn just the same, be it Cards, Coins, Rings etc...
Or is she in some situation? Like performing on stage? Or something?

No need to apologies. I guess my sentence structure got problem. That why your misinterpret. Stage magic are expensive than close-up magic. I like close up magic more as in everyday objects so that i can show it to my friends when they requested. However, stage magic i can't. But i not sure where to find the resources.

I feel that girls have an added advantage over guys as they will likely be less hackled.
As for what genres of magic, it will depends on what you like. qureyoon has given you a good source and this book is recommended by everyone. Even experienced magicains refer to it from time to time. It is not too expensive as well. Probably $40 to $50 for a 500 over pages hardcover book.
After doing magic for sometime, you will find something you like or excel in. You can then pursue that genre. All this will come naturally, don't worry too much.

Back on topic, for a girl, I suppose magic is the same as a guy. Simple things you can start learning:-
-Spongeballs
-Hot Rod (I love these things) (I got this for SGD$8)
-RubberBand Magic (These things are awesome!!)
You can do lots and lots of things with just Rubber Band. Standard routine would be Crazyman's handcuff. Then you can advance and get other routines. The amount of magic in just rubberband, is crazzzy. :) And it's inspect-able and is an everyday object!
This is of course in addition to what the other guys here have said. Getting Mark Wilson's book is good! :D
Anyway, there's some Street Magic going on for the Singapore Street Festival thing in town. The next one is on the 4th at Plaza Sing starting from 1:30pm onwards.
You can go down there, watch both the Street Magic and the Stage Magic and maybe you can get a feel of what you like. Even talk with the magicians and get them to show you something.
Seeing is always better then just reading about it!

A better question would be "What else can I learn other than cards and coins that are suitable for ME."
Gender does not matter. Magic is magic, whether performed by male/female. They should be held to the same standards.
And anyway, there is still so much to learn from cards and coins. Card magic itself has at least 3 different 'variants'. Coins even more still considering they are generally harder than cards.
That being said, you should choose your material carefully and if you think that cards and coins are not your thing, continue to simply watch magic and widen your horizons until you find something that you fall in love with.
Then practice like mad.
Here are some ideas to get you going:

I think it depends on the girl.
Although Magic Babe Ning did mention that girls are in a slight disadvantage in a male dominated environment, I am of the opinion that girls can actually stand out above the rest in a casual/professional magic performance
Imagine this, we see two magicians side by side. A girl and a guy. You can only visit one. Who will you visit?
Though the answers are debatable, I will want to see a girl doing magic on the simple reason that there are some many guy magicians, sometimes it's refreshing to see a girl perform. I guess there is the element of something along the line of refreshing.
To reply to magic_most_wanted queries, I will say, if a girl can do flourishes, it will be a huge wow factor :)

Wiz Kid Wilhelmina, a 9 year old girl from the USA, has been inventing magic tricks that she is collecting in a book called "Magic For Girls." Naturally, the magic is not restricted to only girls, but might be of more interest to girls than boys for those starting out in magic.
One example is her e-Book on "Magic Jacks." Many girls around the world are familiar with the game of jacks, and she has come up with a series of moves and tricks that can be performed with jacks. Her first use of the tricks was to show other girls who were playing games of jacks out on the playground, but now she performs the magic in regular shows and boys as well as girls are entertained with the things she can do with jacks.
She has a trick called "Teddy Bear (Hairy) Houdini" where she lets helpers tie up her Teddy Bear, and then the bear "escapes" and disappears from a shoe-box.
Another trick is a misers dream performed with candy coins and a piggy bank.
Girls should learn all kinds of magic, same as boys, but there is no reason they can't make the magic a bit more interesting for other girls to watch and enjoy. You can find out more about her and her "Magic For Girls" on my Web site.
