How do i control the audience?
LoyaLover - September 1, 2010 03:37 AM (GMT)
I think audience management is quite a struggle for many trying out.
Instead of putting ourselves in a position that we are "
controlling the audience", I think it should be phrased as controlling the situation.
Might be a small change in phrasing, but I think the intent behind it is important. Our audience are not there to be controlled. We are not there to manipulate them to listen to us. We are to instead, arouse their curiosity and interest and our final goal is to have them engaged in the interaction.
Maybe I am not directly answering your topic, but I've seen your performance a couple of times my friend! It's important to help our audience feel comfortable enough before starting out any effects! In the end it may not be so much about the magic, but more about having fun yo!

Hmm... can you give an example of the situation you were in? And what you mean by "control"? Prevent them from heckling you? Prevent them from turning over things at the wrong time? Holding their attention during performance? Getting them to do things the way you want?
Also, it really depends on WHO (eg, friends, paid shows or strangers on street) you are performing to, and HOW did you approach them. Very difficult to tell you everything in such limited space. Maybe you can narrow down your problems and see if we can help you?
I mean if it is Lu Chen or Cyril, probably their prestige alone would be enough to control any audience. But unknowns like us would need extra effort in this.

My friends. They ask for shuffling but i can't give them shuffle cause is a arranged deck.

Why in the first place they ask to shuffle your deck?

Perhaps you could do a false shuffle like Henstein shuffle, etc?
And also, I watched a tv show this afternoon. One of the Judges told the boy said ," Do not tell the audience that you are shuffling. If not they will think, that you are doing something wrong. Shuffling and cutting the cards are a natural magician stuff to do. So just shuffle openly". If they still want to shuffle, why not? let them shuffle. Then proceed to another trick.
If you really really want to do that trick, you should always bring another sta**ed deck then do a deck sw***.
Or you can say like," Can I shuffle?"
"Absolutely! Just as soon as I'm done with this trick!"
Most importantly, do not draw too much attention on the cards. Bring the heat away. And dont make it so obvious you are shuffling.
However, the best is to continue with another trick.
Just my honest opinons ^_^ ^_^

Did that show happen to be Variety Big Brother Magic show?
Please look at your previous thread when you asked that question, and look at the link I provided in the previous one for shuffles.
Performing to family and friends have its pros and cons. They are harder to control, especially if you are younger. They know you well and there isn't this feeling of respect (not to say they are hecklers, but not the audience to magician respect). But they are more forgiving, for they know you well.
Not very sure about this, but if you want your audience to stop flipping open every single thing, you should keep them busy. Let them check stuff that they are can check. Or you can talk to them or direct their attention to something that can be touched.

Yes, birder123 has some good advice, misdirect your audience on something that can be checked. But if you are doing only with st*c*ed deck, I guess theres nothing for you to misdirect, so perhaps just proceed with another trick.
