If you are pretty sure of what you have been learning and can do it flawless, then get new stuff. Get stuff that are not too diffcult but easy for your hand movements.
I think what i mean is start a level which is suitable for you, like Intermediate or so ? JUst be sure to practice.
Good luck :)

I am of the opinion that it is MUCH BETTER to buy a good book on the basics of card magic and start with the foundations rather than learn individual tricks by themselves. Because you often will neglect presentation and misdirection if you learn individual tricks. Plus books are usually very good value for money.

If you hate reading get micheal Ammar easy to master card mircles DVD and learn his stuff there.. easy to master and really good effect In My point of view lah... :D
Sherman - March 5, 2005 12:54 PM (GMT)
In my opinion, if you are performing walkarounds, then u should do card routines.
1. Cards thru hanky ( my personal fav )
2. Hula fusion ( great for couples )
3. fedex change
if u jus wan to perform for a casual audience kind of thing then coin routines like the following would be great.
1. coins across by paul green ( the coins appears in the spec hands )
2. three coin transpo (forgot the actual name ) by curtis kam.
hope these could be of some use.
regards
Sherman

im not sure abt that, i feel that if i do only cards for walkarounds, its boring and lacks varieyt. of course cards are simpler to work with, and i'll base my routine on cards, but will try to add in some other kinds of effects.
i would like to do walkarounds with only say 1 or 2 poweful card effects, with many other coins, cups and balls, mentalism effect. the only downside is have to carry more stuff. but i think its worth it considering u are able to keep delivery punches and maintain their attention due to the variety of effects.
Defile - March 5, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
IMO, if doing strolling magic, cards and mentalism stuff are the best... because cards are compact and easy to carry around. You wouldn't want to carry tons of stuff with you to do strolling magic would you?

im very very inspired by tommy wonder's stuff, and he does many powerful effects. u can NEVER accomplish the same kind of effect on audience with cards alone. he has variety in his effects and props, and that creates continued interest.
so, i feel that u shud carry as much powerful effects as possible, without looking like ur coat is bulging.
criteria will be:
instant-reset
IMPACT
variety
time for effect
Defile - March 5, 2005 02:04 PM (GMT)
hmm.. ok.. great to have large variety.. but moving from one genre of effects to another must be smooth, so it doesn't leave the audience lost
GordonLi - March 5, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
i disagree. its not hard to keep the audience in the know of what's happening.
in fact, its harder to transition between card effects than from card to coins for example.
within a genre, u have ensure that after the first effect, it leads to the second and so on.
but if u are introducing new items, it creates curiosity. not much explanation is needed. the audience just wants to know what u are gonna do, not why u are gonna do it. of course, it will be better to be able to explain the change, but usually they will understand that u are trying to achieve variety.
what tommy usually does is just take out an item and dun really explain. so the audience will be wondering "what is he gonna do?". or he introduces his effect in a very interesting way. like his wild card effect starts out with a beeper going off, he looks at his watch, and says "its time for my hobby". and his hobby is collecting cards, so he takes out his cards and he gets the audience to select a card, and he proceeds...

Off Topic but...I guess JC was smart and knew that you would really like the cards through silk routine. Too bad I didn't bother to learn it from him that day.
GordonLi - March 5, 2005 02:29 PM (GMT)
well, tommy wonder showed his handling for card through hankerchief in his DVD, and its very detailed and well thought out! he uses this to demonstrate some theory on attention control i think.
but anyway, i dun think card through handkerchief shud be done in walkaround situations. i dont think it shud be done surrounded, and i will not compromise naturalness by trying to kill the angles by holding it close to my body.
GordonLi - March 5, 2005 02:31 PM (GMT)
is any1 burning with envy that i have tommy's dvds?
lol, sorry im evil... :g:
i just spent the whole of today watching his 3 dvds. phew!

Yup i m onli bout two months old to magic...I already had born to perform and micheal ammar intro to coin magic...Red hot mamacita i also know already...And i m getting into flourishes now..So i dunno what to learn next..Close up?
Jimagician - March 7, 2005 01:55 AM (GMT)
Whenever a magician ask me what trick to learn next, I am concern.
It is not about learning a trick after another that makes a magician, it is about the love of the art, understanding the principles & theories behind the art and really appreciating the "art" itself.
Instead of going for "tricks", my advice is to internalise principles of magic (through reading, reflecting and perhaps watching some videos). Spend time reading and study our art and don't just focus on learning tricks after tricks just because we are running out of tricks to impress others.
A magician is not just about performing tricks to entertain others, but he/she is also a person who respects and understand the art in depth (i.e. its history, principles and theories)
Trust me, if you get this right, you will never run out of tricks!
Food for thought :)

Hey thats a wonderful comments...Thanks...But i can say my passion for magic wil not lose to anyone...Mayb i am juz lost w/o some one guiding me to the right path...Any volunteer?
Winder - March 7, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
However, i must say that passion cannot be measured, it must be simply from the heart. It's no use saying "I love magic' everyday with every word of that on your mouth every minute, learn the art of magic well. From Showmanship to everything. :)
If you are lost, just backtrace, see what you have actually learnt, try to fiddle around with some of the moves you have learnt, learn how to improve the current performance. Then show it to us, therefore we will know whether are you ready to actually proceed for better showmanship or magical effect.
poping - March 7, 2005 10:44 AM (GMT)
cards coins are close up lol..
u need to really have the interest. i dunno how to say la.
there is no specific way or gudie to learning magic!
its about ur attitiude ur love for magic all this.
we can just recommend.. some magic types just doesnt suit certain type of ppl.
well.. u can try doing cups n balls? or sponge balls?
i think stick with 2 types first. haha.. master the 2.
cards got a lot routines.
well i think i recommend some..
for cards. maybe u can get art of astonishment. it has RESET.
great routine. get invisible palm. this 2 routines are also in bill malones on the loose 4. lol reset is so darn complicated it takes almost forever to realyl understand.
invisible palm is a strong routine. bill tlaks abt the strongness in the tape.
for coins.
get david roth expert coin magic made easy and jay sankey revolutionary coin.

Guys Guys .. Chill out... if you actually look at the first post, he actually ask for Cards Routine, if he widen his scope too early. Then he's un focus, which will bring him more trouble, so kindly just offer him CARDS Routine, don't confuse him with other stuff. Thank you
M@gical86 - March 7, 2005 11:19 AM (GMT)

http://www.peterduffie.com/hope tis helps... :)
M@gical86 - March 7, 2005 02:43 PM (GMT)
Hmm thanks daren,i may consider this when i finish my ring leader dvd...
Moondust - March 7, 2005 04:48 PM (GMT)
If you're looking at tips for card routines, here's what I would suggest:
Learn as many basic to intermediate sleights as you can.
Afterwhich you can watch pretty much any card routine and more or less figure out how it is done (unless it is peppered with lots of intricate gimmicks). From then on, use your own imagination to create a brand new routine or improve on an existing routine that you have seen. You'll soon realise that fiddling with card magic this way becomes a journey of creation and every destination is fulfilling.
Don't ignore your basics for the sake of learning something more advanced. They are more important than you think, even if you have reached intermediate levels of performance.
M@gical86 - March 9, 2005 10:25 AM (GMT)
Yup thanks moondust,i m always practising my basics..Almost everyday i m sticking with my card...Everywhere...And recently i just invented a trick by myself thou its not very gd,i still can get some shocking face at least...
Moondust - March 10, 2005 05:11 PM (GMT)
That sounds great. You're on the right path to creativity. Why don't you perform it to us at the next meet or post a link to a video of that effect? I'm pretty sure the bros and sisters here can chip in to improve your effect.
