Title: Impromptu Close Up Trick!
Description: What will you show?

JasonL - March 3, 2005 12:06 PM (GMT)
Hello there,

What if you're caught offguard and someone suggests you show some magic and the rest of the group enthusiastically agrees. You don't have your deck of cards with you, you left your gimmicked coins at home, someone stole your TT!! What will you show now??

I will do a coin vanish and reproduction, coins through table, T&R tissue paper, paperballs over the head if there's a crowd, and maybe a mental handphone effect.

Share yours!!

Jason

I do crazy man's handcuffs. Always keep rubber bands in my pockets.

Winder - March 3, 2005 12:28 PM (GMT)
I will do some mentalism stuff, and i always keep 2 Poker Size card in my wallet, and a few business card too, including a half dollar too and a few piece of flash paper. So was never caught off guard before, but i don't really "ok i will perform". I don't perform to people unless i feel like it and there's a need to do so. :X

illusionist - March 3, 2005 12:40 PM (GMT)
Hmm.. sometimes I do caught off guard and so I will just see wat I have to perfrom if nothing I will always have a name card and I will perfrom mental effects.. Or perfom some coin vanish with local coin or I and edwin is the same will have some tissue paper in the wallet to burn lol... :D

[Ling] - March 3, 2005 12:41 PM (GMT)
For me, I will do some really simple metalism PICK A NUMBER that kind of trick, and doing it fast and snappy. Or, as I have my Half Dollar in my wallet, i can always do some simple coin routines. Or, I will pick up my ''balls'' (not literally, duh.) and do some cold-reading/muscle-reading.

But I always have a least a deck with me, and my friends are sick of seeing magic, they claimed they have been fooled and made a fool for enough number of times. So...

Coins are one of the safest fall backs, someone is BOUND to have some coins, coins across, coins thru table, coins vanish and reappearance.
And i love the paperballs over the head, especially on girls B) For some strange reasons, most girls actually gets a little shy if you let them hold your hands for a while :g: IT'S ONLY HANDS! :!!:

I have a mental handphone effect too Jason, which basically uses magician's choice and good psychological misdirection. I wonder if it's the same you use. I really like it because it's about as impromptu as it can possibly get, and it has a nice, real magic kinda feel to it. We should trade notes on that sometime.

JasonL - March 3, 2005 01:21 PM (GMT)
For those of you who does business card tricks, what kind of them do you do?

Morphine morphine...forever trying to hook up girls using magic...tsk tsk...anyway will share my hp trick with you the next meeting!

Kevin - March 3, 2005 02:06 PM (GMT)
How to get into a coin trick from this kinda situation

"Jeez, you caught me on my day off... but if you insist, i'll work overtime, but for a fee of 40 cents. Two 20 cent coins? Thanks, sir... in fact, let me show you something weird about this coin right here... if you can hold out your hands like a beggar, you'll see why..."

Go into Greg Wilson's "Quicksilver" routine. Teh YAY :D

On the Spot is an awesome DVD, but if you have pen AND paper, you can do a nice mentalism effect with book tests and equivoques and what not. Dan Harlan's DVD's helped me so that I won't be without magic in any situation... even without props of any kind. ;)

BuaYa - March 3, 2005 02:51 PM (GMT)
Finger fantasies is a great effect that you can do.
And, I agree that magi's should carry back ups in their wallets. I know I do.

GordonLi - March 4, 2005 12:09 PM (GMT)
for me:

magicard
some other impromptu mentalism effect
crazy man's handcuff + fusing into 1
rubberband and ring
coin production
coin multiplication
coins across
coins though table
metal bending

Defile - March 5, 2005 01:35 PM (GMT)
Depending on where you are when you are approached. If in a cafe, do spoon bending.

But usually I just do rubber band stuff - Crazy man handcuff , linking bands, and another effect where a watch jumps from the first line to the next one.

Simple coin vanishes works fine too.. or just do vanishes with whatever you have at that point of time

neo23 - March 5, 2005 02:52 PM (GMT)
card tricks, since i bring a deck everywher i go, or magic with everyday objects.. like tissue.. ;)

Sherman - March 6, 2005 04:15 AM (GMT)
You can do stuff like

1. ghost bill ( can be done with borrowed $. )

2. i forgot the name of this one but is damn good.
the effect is the lipstick mark passes thru the back of the spec hand to the inside. you can use cigaratte ash if u doing for smokers. this is by g. wilson

3. recap by g. wilson again

4. and if u damn skill or daring, do finger fantasies.

regards
Sherman

GordonLi - March 6, 2005 07:56 AM (GMT)

MagicalPam - March 7, 2005 02:50 AM (GMT)
Impromptu, I wonder why so many magicians would go to impromptu magic because their friends asked them to do ....
compare with these situation guys ....
1) If you meet David Beckham, or a friend who is a football player, will you ask him to kick a ball ?
2) If you meet someone who likes to sing, will you ask him to sing on the spot ....
it would go the same for magic ....right ?

Anyway, I have also some impromptu that I am always "prepared in my mind "

1) 3 predictions effects ( Mark Wilson's book )
2) 5 Business Card ( I asked them to write numbers 1,2,3,4,5)
aks them to choose any, shuffle them and I will find their numbers
by "lie detector" revelation
3) Hoy Impromptu Book Test

M.A.D. - March 7, 2005 05:41 AM (GMT)

:g: Great ideas guys!! Keep it up!

TT tricks....Floating paper balls...you guys carry these gimmicks around with you all the time? Remember it's impromptu tricks...

Anyway zinally, interested in watching you perform "zombie" fork and paddle tricks with butter knife! Care to describe a little more? Your routine? Oh and the chopstick through chin sounds interesting too...heh! :g:

M.A.D. - March 8, 2005 02:27 AM (GMT)
once a magician total me that without TT, just like not clothed, so i also carry 1 TT with me, i am clothed. what about you?? B)

TT so many things you can do with it.
I had found out that actually we put a small m***** in my tt.
It's not one of the "rare earth" m*****, but it's got enough of a m*******field to play with. It's strong enough to l*** a couple of paperclips, but I need to test it out on a lot of other things. I want to gaff a card (by splitting it then putting some sort of m**** in it, maybe n****** or s**** wool) so it can: levitate (stick to my finger), find itself (ala haunted deck), move around, spin etc. B)

The "zombie" fork routine: U cover a fork with a table napkin & when u take the napkin..the fork seem floating & rise (as the zombie ball) and when it rest back to the table it can be pick up as a normal fork & spectator can inspect it.
The Butter Knife trick is just an impromptu trick using p....e moves.
Last ly chopstick thru chin. The routine; U pick-up a chopstick and put it under your chin and push the chopstick & Spectator can see that the chopstick penetrate your chin and thru' your mouth. WHEN I do this some people freak out especially when I use tomato sauce in my mouth. :D :D

i_neveregret - March 9, 2005 02:42 PM (GMT)

That is about an intermediate level trick if you are to do it properly I think....

Either that or you are a natural born talent for magic.

I do not know which trick u refer to..
Is it the paper napkin that u tore a part & restore back eventually or the napkin that u burn at the tip & restore fully cos for the later trick is easier cos u using a gimmick. I also agree to do the T&R the method involve need some experience.

Alexander - March 18, 2005 01:25 PM (GMT)
Tenkai pennies!
or if i have 3 coins, then it'll be 3 coins across.

Hey are some of my favourite routines:
1) CMH
2) Liquid Metal
3) Watch Routine (Osterlind)
4) Coins Across
5) Recapped

All totally impromptu and can be done with everyday objects. Greg Wilson's "On the Spot" is highly recommended man. Liquid metal is killer stuff man!! :P

kryptikalism - April 29, 2005 05:56 PM (GMT)
What's CMH?

ZzaG - April 29, 2005 07:22 PM (GMT)
Crazy Man's Handcuffs

dtjk - April 30, 2005 05:26 AM (GMT)
well, im sure to have a TT every i go.but i dont carry a silk everywhere i go :P .so i'll just make their money disappear and give them one of my 2 dollar notes to them.

GordonLi - May 1, 2005 01:20 AM (GMT)
its not a good idea to do vanishing silk anyway, since its the effect usually being sold with a TT. so quite some ppl might noe the secret.

but if u do a diff effect, ppl usually cant guess... :)

kryptikalism - May 1, 2005 01:35 AM (GMT)
Not many realise this, but the kind of magic you do determines what kind of magician people think you are. If you do an impromptu mental effect and really sell it, and don't do stuff like ambitious card or the biddle trick, you'll probably get specs who think you're a mentalist.

Impromptu magic is not simply putting together effects that you know. You'll have to see which of the routines fit well together. If you do center tears followed by a book test followed by metal bending, these are clearly mental effects. Doing crazy man's handcuffs after that will slightly diminish what you have performed before that.

Hence, there is no such thing as unprepared impromptu magic. You really have to think about what goes and what doesn't. If you are really really unprepared, don't perform.

R_jayz - May 1, 2005 05:45 AM (GMT)
Personally, i don't really like Crazy Man Handcuffs... It's not really like magic, more like...more like....i don't know how to say....Just don't feel magicky..

Impromtu effects... i like Card warp(or Voodoo Zone, whatever), very nice impact on the spectator... no need for poker cards... any business card can do. But most of the time i got a few cards in my wallet.

but then again, i don't do many impromptu effects... cause i either have cards with me when people want to see magic or i don't show them, say the stars alignment ain't right :) or some other stupid excuses.
