Title: Performer's Attire
Description: What should a femme Magi wear?

Ning - March 4, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
...Since "fashion" is listed under the subheading of this topic... just wanna ask for your 2 scotch & soda cents worth on what do you think is an idea costume for a lady performer?

You guys have it easy- the usual black jacket and optional top hat would be perfect for a formal (paid) performance. How about women - something not so tacky and commands respect, and not just simply, 'eye-candy'?

Your inputs please ^_^ If you have any reference, feel free to include the link or post a pic.

Thanks!

Well... i guess it depends on whether your doing stage, close-up...
if u are doing close up one on one type of thing.. i think just dress casual should be good enough...=)

Ning - March 4, 2005 07:49 AM (GMT)
LOL... Talking about formal paid performances here Justy, definately not the regular street magic kind where jeans or anything goes... something professional.

Thanks.

A tube with a black trench coat and black pants will be nice lol I think lol

A tube - $20

A trench Coat - $250

A Black Pants - $ 70

A Day of Enjoyable and unforgettable Perfromance - Priceless..

:P

Something that you can perform your most famous signature effect easily in.... :ph43r:
Ok, ok...before you ban me for flaunting the thread relevance rule...

I think being a female in a magic performance doesn't necessarily mean you have to show lotsa skin. There's plenty of ways for a girl to look good (and even sexy) without showing all their legs.
I think an appropriately choosen pants is good. It shows confidence and a little of the "women on top" image (since you are the main show you don't wanna look like a like sideshow "vase"). The right pants can make you look in-control yet sexy and feminine at the same time.
Go with simple soft lines. Avoid look like a snakebabe with something too slinky and tight. Or a power-hungry, man-hating, coporate ladder climber with something with aggressive stripes. Or butchy with a plated front :P

For the top, probably not something too "costumy" or unnecessarily sexy, in my opinion. Again to avoid looking like a "sideshow vase". Something sleek and chic with clean, easy lines will be good.
Tube tops are the easy way out, but they are not the best things to wear if you are gonna be moving around a lot. You don't wanna give the wrong signal by pulling at your top every few mins.
Shirt is possible but tricky, could be a "do great or fall flat". Definitely go for something very tapered with not to much collar.
Spag-straps are also very safe, but definitely wear the correct undergarment. 4 straps are often 2 straps too many ;) Unless that 2 extra straps are really interesting and compliments the top.
Tops are easier once you have set your mind on the bottom you wanna wear. Just find something that looks fitting and not too restrictive.

And the magic word for female fashion is always Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise ;)
Choosing and investing in the right accessories might have more impact on the image that you wanna bring across than the clothes itself.

There you go, from all the female shopping that I've done, my 2 scotch and soda cents :)

That would depend on your routine wouldn't it? Asian pro challanges' Alice-in-Wonderland act vs Umbrella-act-Helper... Completely different if you asked me.

i think one of those ladies office wear will be good, it looks formal enough. i mean those with a coat. a coat is useful to hold items for performance. and this formal coat can be worn over say a gown.

this is the best pic i could find:

its a little casual, so to make it more formal, maybe go for the standard black and white, and maybe a dress or gown instead of a skirt.

BuaYa - March 4, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
Gordie... Tell me you;re joking... If you dress like that, your ticket sales will drop by 3/4!!!

GordonLi - March 4, 2005 01:24 PM (GMT)
i know that looks casual,

therefore i said need to tweak the colour balance. btw, its for ladies (and thats what ning requested).

imagine a white top (same), gray coat and a long black skirt. wud it look better?

ziLin - March 4, 2005 01:30 PM (GMT)
actually, wearing a white top, grey coat and long black skirt would make you look like a legal assistant. and coats don't really go with long skirts..

anyway, i think morphine has covered most of it.. do not go for long black skirts i think. movement's difficult and it makes you look like a guitar player! :ph43r: unless it's those kind of pleated kind which don't stick to your legs..

GordonLi - March 4, 2005 01:37 PM (GMT)
yes, u got the term right. i was thinking along the line of "legal assistant"-like dress. the diff is the outer coat, which is VERY useful for compartmentalising performance materials.

i think this is practical and professional.

it is impt for a professional magician to dress differently from his audience.

im not saying make urself stand out from the audience, and try to be different. but u have to distinguish urself somehow and being just 1 level above them allows u to command respect and adds professionalism.

For me, I would like to wear a gothic black leather dress with a black cloak/cape over it plus corpse paint on my face. Wooo, nice!

lol. pick one of the 3 females..

GordonLi - March 5, 2005 12:26 PM (GMT)
i hope some1 understands my point on practical dressing.

looking at those 3 ladies, i wonder how they are gonna keep their cards/coins/etc if doing a closeup walk-around. i know they dont, but just saying a closeup lady magi shud not use any of those 3 as possible choices.

tham - March 5, 2005 01:30 PM (GMT)
the 3 of them are stage magicians.. they can pretty much wear anything they like that suits them or the illusion. imagine a close up magician in mayuko's alice-in-wonderland costume, you'll get the point.

i can tell that morph has lots of experience in female attire :P , but i am not too sure about the point on accessories. sure, earrings and perhaps a bracelet coupled with a not too flashy necklace would be good, but too much is overkill.

Clement - March 20, 2005 02:34 PM (GMT)
Well...i am not sure which will fits you well...but for me i just look at how other magicians wear and find which 1 is the best...

I know it may seem like copying...but just pick and mix...haha

Ning - April 13, 2005 05:20 PM (GMT)
Wow... Uncle Wong, thanks for those links ^_^ Very useful stuff!

I just recently went clothes shopping at one of my fave shops called Chaos located at The Heeren Shops... I got an interesting black halter top which I thought might go well with my black leather pants and boots for a possible upcoming stage show come May.

Decided against wearing a skirt... don't wanna zao-geng when I step out of the snake basket or something.
