Nicholas - March 5, 2005 07:50 AM (GMT)

Defile - March 5, 2005 01:01 PM (GMT)

My one hand fans are always uneven.. need some advice from u guys

tham - March 5, 2005 01:32 PM (GMT)
when i started out my OH fans were very crappy too. but with enough practice they'll form very well. it really just takes practice, as with everything else.

Winder - March 5, 2005 01:38 PM (GMT)
Just keep on practicing till our next outing. Our pros will be glad to guide you along, e.g. Huron, Kevin, Daryl, Chris, Cai, Sly and so on.... I can't name any more or this whole thread will be full of pros names.

Hi there..
From what i know, i have only seen Tudor teach the One Handed Fan in Gen - X. NO Superhandz DVD's teach the One Handed Fan because De'vo & Jerry cant even do a nice one handed fan. Bucks also dont teach the One Handed Fan. So yeah. Many people learnt the One Handed Fan by themselves and those who have manged to get good ones have found a very good technique to it. Play around, you will get it. Go for smc outings, meet the flourishers there, ask them for some help.

To a certain extent, yes it is exposure. ANY flourish move out there deserves the respect as ANY magic sleight. People buy DVD's to learn flourishes. So you wouldnt want to write up a tutorial online for someone who ask how XXX flourish is done when others have PAID to actually learn it. TIPS and ADVICES are what is to be given to the person that needs help.

Get It?

:off: ok leme ask.. which is better for beginers.. gen x or show off?

Showoff 1 is already out of production, so good luck on getting a copy.
Dont even think about downloading it. That's BAD

Showoff 2, good stuff there. Seriously.

Gen x, flourish + a lil magic.

Enough with the blahblahblah bad teaching gen x. blahblahblah
Id say grab the NEW gen x. Coming out soon, dont know when.

Huron - March 6, 2005 03:29 AM (GMT)
Tudor's material is THE BEST for people who want to begin flourishing. Get Show Off II. Amazing material, totally worth the money.
No fans there that you can actually learn from though, because he himself isn't really one for fans. It's a great learning resource for cuts though. As Sly said, no real learning resource for one handed fans. You COULD try out Jeff Mcbride's Art of Card Manipulation series though. He teaches a pretty good one there. If you're totally cheapskate and all, buy us dinner at the next meeting.

One hand fan, one hand fan.

M@gical86 - March 6, 2005 07:05 AM (GMT)
so does e fanning powder makes your card smooth?Or what other effect?

SeNgHoE - March 6, 2005 07:07 AM (GMT)
It creates ffriciton between the card and at the same time seperates them so the cards somehow "ROLLS" on each other.

Back to sleep.

tham - March 6, 2005 03:23 PM (GMT)
whatever the case do NOT refer to ellusionist for OH fans. brad christian does them horribly, only good point is that they're even.

allan ackerman also teaches the one-handed fan(s) on his advanced card control series. but he does them about the same as brad christian too, not very circular.

now, someone who does really powerful OH fans is Jeff Sheridan. probably one of the best card manipulators ever.. check out his Genius At Work 4 volume set.

GordonLi - March 6, 2005 03:28 PM (GMT)
then again, what does brad do well?

look at his erdnase colour change, YUCKSSS!!!

i feel sick watching that kinda standard for erdnase change, gives away the secret!

Just come for the outings..

i can say that Singapore boasts a few of the best one handed fanners out there.. huron, sly,cai of course.. and Justy does a pretty decent one as well!

if theyre in a good mood.. they just might teach you a thing or two. the rest is for you to practice ;)

You forgot the big daddy of them all... Bone!!! That guy was the first, man... he has da D.

Actually, now he has an O... scary :|

Daryl - March 7, 2005 05:06 AM (GMT)
Of course I didnt forget good ol Bone :P

But you'd have a bigger chance finding a manuscript teaching you the one hand fan in a sand pit than seeing bone at an SMC outing :D

maybe it can be put in the DVD :ph43r:

I learnt mine from Jeff McBride's Art of Card Manipulation videos. It's on Volume 1.

Some tips on the handling: Hold your packet in the same grip you would have if you wanted to shoot a card from the top of the packet. Place your thumb at the bottom corner just on top of your pinky, and make slow motion of snapping your fingers. The fingers go down while the thumb goes up. Start with a small packet (maybe 6 - 8 cards) then increase until you can do a whole deck.

I would NOT recommend using fanning powder unless all you do are card manipulations. Even then, a normal bicycle deck doesn't need fanning powder because it's air cushion finish makes it quite smooth.

Fanning powder mucks up your normal deck so you can't use it properly for regular card effects. It also lulls you into a false sense of security where you think you can fan, but you really can't. The powder becomes a crutch.

Just some thoughts.

There are Pros and Cons. ^_^

I guess we have to moderate between the 2.

tham - March 7, 2005 02:14 PM (GMT)
a well-conditioned deck would be better than a slightly newer, powdered one. and by well-conditioned.. its very soft and may even feel puffy round the edges.

j.shurtz - March 9, 2005 07:33 AM (GMT)
well maybe you are kidding, but i disagree... i think newer decks are better bc they spread a lot more evenly and easily. but i'd also say, nix on the fanning powder... it'd be much more useful to just learn how to do it with any particular deck IMO, not to mention the whole crutch thing. really old decks though, i cannot make spread evenly. plus they feel yucky.

one handed fans really warp my decks... sucks. and they hurt my fingers a lot after a bit if i'm just sort of practising them or something.

i'm curious about what fanning powder is comprised of? this is not me saying i want to know so that i would make some bc i feel i am perfectly fine at fanning, but i just mean, is it really, baby powder looking or something? and it must be fairly fine grained bc if it weren't it would be gritty and make fans worse... i think?

I read somewhere in a online magic webbie that some magicians use corn starch baby powder (i think that's what its called) as a quick and cheap replacement for Fanning Powder.. I tried it myself, and it works. Fanning improves a little, but my hands smell like a baby after that.. ^_^

Also, i can't fit the deck back into the box, as the cards 'grow' thicker too. Dun ask why.. <_<

j.shurtz - March 10, 2005 10:38 PM (GMT)
hmm well thanks for the info, but ehh i do not want to put stuff on any of my decks... heheh funny though... "growing cards"

Defile - March 11, 2005 12:21 PM (GMT)
I use the baby powder thing.. It works very well! haha.. my old yucky deck fanned very nicely after i powdered it..

i_neveregret - March 19, 2005 01:08 PM (GMT)
