Title: Review On Dream Of Aces
Description: I call it Ace Teleportation..
Barney - March 12, 2005 05:08 PM (GMT)
One of them most powerful and famous tricks around. Deceptively simple and simply beautiful to watch.
Effect:
The facedown deck is cut into four, and the four aces are produced. Next, the piles are put back together, with the aces left aside..
Then, 4 piles of 3 cards are formed. The 1st 3 piles are faceup. The last pile is face down and placed beside the Ace of Spades. All this time, the other 3 aces are visible to the spectators.
An ace is then placed on each of the faceup piles. Each ace is turned facedown. *wave over the cards* One by one, the cards turned over. Amazingly, all the aces from all 3 piles have vanished! Attention is now drawn to the 4th pile (the facedown pile beside the Ace of Spades). The cards are turned over to reveal the three aces!
Its a wonderful trick, one of those that requires no patter, only music. I have done it for quite a number of friends. Repect goes up after this routine. Too bad it can't be done on the streets so easily. Best done in a room, on a table, with an overhead camera, projected onto big screen (David Copperfield did it this way).
Well, that's abt it. Hope u guys liked this review. U gotta go to Ellusionist.com to see what i'm talking abt.. :P
The trick can be purchased at Ellusionist.com too (i dunno if anyone in Singapore has it. I got it as a present B) )

One of my favourite table effects.
I usually perform this with a couple of Zarrow shuffles and Up-the-ladder cuts interjected. I have filmed a vid of my routine but I still need to improve on it because my Zarrow sucks (expecially after I saw Farid's clean handling of the shuffle).
Not too difficult to perform and a good reputation builder with your friends. Most of the time, the specs will wanna take a closer look at the final four Aces and not the indifferent cards after the effect. ;)
Try incorporating a couple more moves as convincers from the original MacDonald's Aces. It'll heighten the impact of the trick.
Gary Ouellet is a perpetual genius when it comes to conceptualising table effects. Dream of Aces happen to be one of them. There are lots more to ponder on in the Camirand Academy of Magic's website.

Maybe it's quite old so you guys don't know, but Penguin and Ellusionist kinda broke up 2 tricks ( Shotgun Aces at Penguin and Dream of Aces at Ellusionist) . It is actually 2 tricks together called Grandfather's Aces , showned by David Copperfield.
I haven't learn the trick yet..and have seen an interesting variation of this trick. Before the ending of showing the 4 Aces, magicians then flip over the cards to reveal that they've been Jacks all along, and the Aces were found in his pocket

Actually, the Dream of Aces was endorsed by the Camirand Acedemy of Magic. The effect isn't original but the handling is...created by Gary Ouelette himself. Ellusionist just happens to market the product.
Shotgun Aces is another ripoff.

I wanna ask if this routine is done with any gimmicks? need setup?
Barney - April 14, 2005 05:47 PM (GMT)
Gimmicks.. I'd say ya.. (hope this isn't exposure).
Setup is needed, but it takes about 10sec only. I have taken the risk, and setup and done the effect in front of people, twice in a row. Never got caught. ^_^
Once you know the effect, its all about presentation from there.
Btw, i covered mine with patter. I just can't stop talking. :P

Hi, Bring back this topic because i interested in getting this.
I know about it being gimmicked, but whether is the gimmick an extra "tool" that you need to bring out or it is incorporated into the deck?
Hope this question wont bring exposure to the trick.
Thanks in advance for helping.
David Kim.

It has Jazz Aces kind of very smooth flow and visual effect, so very popularly done with music. The basic sleights required is easily accomplishable, but you can always up the notch of the presentation according to your sleights knowledge base.
Very nice and pretty effect if you have seen David Copperfield done it as Grandpa Aces. :)
The gimmick is within the deck to answer your question the way u asked it. B)

Hey, Thanks Aloy for the input.

DKim, just for ya info, i actually use the gimmick for other tricks. I personally think that the gimmick should not be restricted to just the DoA. Let your creativity run a little.
When i first got my gimmick, i was like: Hehehehehe (evil laughter) B)
LarryDK - May 9, 2005 06:02 PM (GMT)
Thanks. I was more worried that the gimmick is hard to handle.

To tell you the truth, I don't really like dream of aces. It looks abit like an average ace assembly to me. yeah I know, screw me all you want. I prefer doing macdonalds aces. To me, it looks a billion times better. And, at the end of my macdonalds aces, the ace of spades visually turns blue and of course, all the other aces join it in the last packet. Could be overkill though. Right, sorry to burst your bubble barney but maybe you should check out macdonalds aces.
Nick.

Hehe.. Dun worry. Burst my bubble all you want.. :D
This was the only magic effect that i ever wrote a review on, in the forums (i think)
I can't really be bothered about effects already.. Am now switching to flourishes full time. ;)
But i can still help on the DoA, should anyone have queries on it.
Btw: the term 'a billion times' is a little too exaggerating, don't ya think? Mac's Aces may be better in your opinion, but the exaggeration there makes your viewpoint sound biased.. (SOUND, not IS). Maybe you could elaborate more, or even give a full review on Mac's Aces? (like me!) :D
Blackwing - May 13, 2005 06:36 AM (GMT)
Yeah ummm a billion times is an exaggeration. Hmm but you're right. I guess both ace assemblys are equally good. Actually I'm just saying this cos I'm too lazy to write a review. B)

I have seen a version of Ace Assemby by David Copperfied in his Illusion DVD. Does anyone know what is it called? Any book or DVD that teaches how to perfrom this visual miracle?
Thanks
