Title: Smc New Logo?

Aloy - March 15, 2005 07:28 AM (GMT)
Who else thinks SMC needs a new Logo and banner? B)

Who wanna design the new logo and Banner for SMC? :)
A logo should be reasonably simple but more importantly meaningful, and something that's duplicatable.
The banner has more room for wild effects and graphics, but again, try to keep it meaningful :)

Leave your permenant mark in SMC! Follow up post with your logos and banners! :!!:

I say... let's have a competition, just for the heck of it :) Not only does the 'winner' gets the fame and glory, you get a little something too. Mystery prize that's worth something... courtesy of Miss Ning ^_^

So, let your creative juices flow!!!

Morphy, I'll leave it up to you to decide on a timeline ;)

MM... too bad my photoshop skills are equal to the number of times I've ever gotten a girlfriend.... which is ZERO :P

ziLin - March 15, 2005 03:31 PM (GMT)
i think it needs a change!

oh wells, what's the meaning of "meaningful"? and anything that is made with the computer will be "duplicatable". really

Aloy - March 15, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
Duplicatable means the logo cannot be overly complicated, such that it can be printed on cards, letters, etc...
So something that uses a photo will not be too good.

Meaningful means it's not totally random. For example, the current logo is a "M" inside a circle, because we are "Magic Circle". And the font is a modern, raw, "youthful" font, because we are internet-savvy, new-school people. But the current logo is not VERY duplicatable because of the drop down shadow, it is difficult to define it.

Doesn't mean you have to represent the same things with the new logo. You may choose to represent other aspect of SMC. Just make SOME sense B)

It will be great if the logo is in a format that is "editable", like photoshop file or freehand file. As opposed to static images like gif or jpg.

i tink this is a gr8 idea n u haf my support

SeNgHoE - March 16, 2005 12:18 PM (GMT)
WOW.

i like wow effect, i mean wild.

But WAHTS UP WITH THE VIPERS. lol. u shd put a bike instead.

GordonLi - March 16, 2005 12:21 PM (GMT)
i think the logo should be a simple one which can be drawn out for practical purposes.

this simple logo can then be modified to various kinds of logos (eg. those provided by zilin) to suit various purposes as and when needed.

nice logos u've got there :!!:
but i think it would be better if it was used as a banner :ph43r:

Daren - March 16, 2005 01:20 PM (GMT)
WOW !!!

those are some damn cool looking banners and logos..

but i think u should put alladdins instead of viperz...

cuz alladins are more common in singapore... B)

Kevin - March 16, 2005 01:42 PM (GMT)
Why's it always gotta be cards in the logo? I mean, I'm a cardist, so it's aight with me, but there are other branches of magic that might like to see their art represented in the logo, I guess :D

How about having the words SMC made out of Ropes, Cards, and Coins? Just a thought... JUST a thought...

Oh and yeah... nice job, Z ;)

-Kev

GordonLi - March 16, 2005 02:16 PM (GMT)
or we could use very classic symbols in magic (eg. rings, wand, top hat, rabbit, etc).

BuaYa - March 16, 2005 02:50 PM (GMT)
Bisecting thumb illusion! Use that in a banner :P

Itachi - March 16, 2005 03:06 PM (GMT)
Eh can make branches from SMC like to TMC for example haha. Den like "our brother forum" pls feel free to join...:P

ziLin - March 16, 2005 03:18 PM (GMT)
haha ^_^ uh, it's not only vipers.. actually, there're aladdins at the centre.. (see the red cards?) it's just that it's not obvious. it's not that i didn't want to put other things.. like coins/ropes etc, it's just super difficult to find nice pictures of those. and making it look obvious is very difficult too..

i think i didn't explain it correctly.. haha. the first "wild" effect is supposed to be used as a banner, because the logo is still the same. but the 2 other "banners" are done while being mindful of the fact that it should be simple.

the 2 are banners, but the focus is.. the M with a white dot in it.. that's the new logo i'm suggesting in response to morphine's call for a new one ^_^

M, obviously stands for magic. and the white dot is actually.. "circle". okay, not highly creative there. i just like the visual effect. the M is really cute, and young.. let's see.. representing the never ending renewal of "Magic" ? lol. okay seriously i'm joking. interpret them yourselves :P

so yeah, gordie.. don't worry, the logo is just that M thing, it CAN be drawn out easily. it's even easier than drawing the current CIRCLE!

but looks like more people like the wild effect..

thanks for the comments anyway! i was afraid to show the banners at first.. :ph43r:

here's my take on the SMC logo.

user posted image

the hand represents sleight-of-hand

the S for singapore, the M for magic. what about 'circle' then? well, nothing to represent a circle there. i could crop the entire image in a circle, perhaps.

this is of course, the 'nicer' version of the logo.

there is a basic black and white version which does not have lighting effects and can be easily replicated on business cards and the like.

BuaYa - March 16, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
Farid! Beautiful! But... Not as a banner, no.

kryptikalism - March 16, 2005 06:31 PM (GMT)
yeah, not as a banner.

ziLin - March 16, 2005 07:09 PM (GMT)
nice nice! i can incorporate it in a banner i think  .. but it looks a bit.. dark. haha.

GordonLi - March 17, 2005 10:06 AM (GMT)
actually, i like farid design alot.

S at the thumb is fine, M maybe can use the 3 lines on the palm, and C at the fingers.

i think for C can use like half an edge of a coin, or ball in finger palm position, or try to place a C using the lines of the edges of the fingers?

[Ling] - March 17, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Wow! I loved Zilin's 1st wild design!

Farid's looked great too.

Very Very Artistic ... Hehehe ...

GordonLi - March 17, 2005 05:02 PM (GMT)
alright, im not good at designing graphics, but anyway, here's an attempt to try and put across my idea on improving farids great design!

user posted image

it looks something like that

S is still the thumb
M is changed to the 3 lines on the palm of the hand
C is added to being an edge of a coin/ball

(oops, its BIG. if any mods know how to reduce the size, do help me change it. thanks.)

ziLin - March 17, 2005 05:18 PM (GMT)
uh.. it may work if.. it's improved upon. yep. that's it. anyway, missing a "c" part is not so important, so farid's design is great! you don't actually have to show ALL the parts of smc right?

so yeah, i say stick with farid's abstract design!

Navarrone - March 17, 2005 05:31 PM (GMT)
any1 tried devo style yet?i mean u noe everytime u see his vids...there will be tis name "devo" made up of burning cards...u noe...we can make SMC logo maybe?

Meh... that isn't very nice, to lift someone's style to use as your own. I like De'vo's way of using cards to form letters to make words, but I'm sure that we are creative enough to explore other options to making a most unique SMC logo. I apologize if I'm come off as too bitter.. I'm practicing what I learnt in the pink elephant book ;)

And Gordie... I think that palmed coin is a little overkill: it takes away the whole subtlety of the thing. Remember that chinese proverb about drawing legs on a picture snake? Yeah :P

But hey, I can't do any better... and with success, must come some failure. So... keep on coming up with ideas, guys :D

LoL. One worded reply? LoL...
And I agree, less is more.

kryptikalism - March 18, 2005 11:49 PM (GMT)
is less really more?

because if we accept that less indeed IS more, than more has to be less, because less = more = less = more = less...
so is more the same as less than?
how do you start to quantify?
is quantity the focus of our small and pathetic significant lives?

I needed a post count. must... reach... 1000.

Mabas - March 19, 2005 12:51 PM (GMT)
I like Farids' original design. It's simply beautiful.

sammyp10 - March 20, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
actually the idea of gordie's "M" for the lines in te hand is really quite " idea" haha.. cos ive been trying to think of how to relate the "M" to anything to do with magic. hmm.. i would day honestly if we are talking abt big poster design stuff, we can use like lots of colours and pictures.. very striking.. but for a logo maybe more..simple, sharp and imm. when a layman sees "SMC" they know its something magical and mystical.. ill try to work something out when i get my new com..
