Title: Stand-up Comedy
CLJ - March 24, 2005 05:16 PM (GMT)
Okay, I know Kevin's big into this, but I'm kinda interested in knowing whether any of other guys here are fans of stand-up comedy. I know it's not a big thing here in Singapore (actually, it practically doesn't exist) but if any of you people are fans, that'd be kinda cool. I'd really suck at it though, being that (contrary to what most of my posts on this forum would suggest) I'm prolly one of THE quietest guys you'll ever meet. Seriously. =/
So anyways, the stuff I'm listening to now include Eddie Murphy's Delirious, and a few of Peter Varghese's clips. Other people who really crack me up also include:
- Stephen Lynch
- Dane Cook [australianfalsetto]Watch me bitchslap this baboon. GORGEOUS[/australianfalsetto]
- Russell Peters [chinadealerfalsetto]BE A MAN - DO THE RIGHT THING[/chinadealerfalsetto]
- Jamie Kennedy (previously from the Jamie Kennedy eXperiment on FOX, Malibu's Most Wanted, and the guy with all the boils on his skin in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle)
- Drew Carey and the rest of the Whose Line is it Anyway cast
If you're thinking that this is really kinda random, you could relate it to magic as well - think David Acer/David Regal/Jay Sankey-wise. ;)
And...yeah, you can tell I'm pretty tired now, so I'm off to bed now. Later.

There's actually a stand up comedy club in clarke quay called One Night Stand. Live comedy on 2 weekends of the month i think, and the cover is $50 on those nights.
It's quite a sleek setup thou so the entry age requirement is at least 21 i suspect.

I was into comedy writing before I became a magician...
I have to tell you... it was hard for me to create really good lines and when I did, they just get stolen by my friends and very soon, my jokes become a cliché.
So I quitted and became a magician. B)

i only occasionally get to watch snippets of stand up comedy, i really do wish to be able to watch a full act (which i understand). im interested to study the way they induce humour, and of course, to enjoy myself! :P

Hell yeah, Russell Peters is one helluva funny guy with all his racist jokes, I always laugh when I watch vids of him.
Good stuff.

there's a relatively unknown guy, David Cross, who released a cd (It's Not Funny) a long time ago. he's really funny.. a great listen on the mrt or bus.
also, Robin Williams (the l337 actor) is also a great comedian, not sure whether he's a stand up person though. he once had a broadway tour around america, if I'm not wrong titled "Live On Broadway". however, his material is pretty explicit and may be offensive to some. otherwise, check it out sometime.

Robin William's "History on Golf" skit was sooooooooo damn amazingly frikkin' funny...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jerry Seinfeld yet....
Russel Peters, while very funny, can be quite crude from time to time. That's what makes it funny (some of the time), but older audiences don't really appreciate that. I found his entire 45minute special hilarious, but my parents were a little put off at some parts.
Also, I think he may have used up all his material in that special. Unless someone can direct me to more resources/videos, that entire special seems to contain almost everything he can talk about.
