Aloy - March 16, 2005 10:15 AM (GMT)
Ok everyone, we have a request for magicians for Down Syndrome Awareness Day. The details are as follows
Date: 16th April (Sat)
Time: 2pm to 7pm (But you don't have to be there for the whole period)
Location: Civic Plaza, Ngee Ann City
Type of magician: Strolling closeup
Target audience: Public
Alright, time to show your stuff! Another chance to get some real life experiences. Interested please follow up post in this thread.
The following is the email from the organising organisation:
Down Syndrome Association (Singapore) is a self-funding non-profit organization that looks after the needs of people with Down syndrome. We have full membership with the National Council of Social Service and are not funded by the Community Chest. As such, our association is totally dependent on the generosity and support from the public and organisations such as yours in order to raise funds. Funds generated through events such as our Flag Day go towards life enrichment programmes for our members, support programmes for families having children with Down syndrome and creating awareness of Down syndrome. This year, DSA will be holding its Flag Day on 16th April 2005 held in conjunction with our Down Syndrome Awareness Day.
DSA Awareness & Flag Day will be held at Civic Plaza, Ngee Ann City, from 9am to 7pm. The event will have a carnival-like atmosphere on that day with activities such as a street soccer exhibition game for persons with DS, Inclusive Art Workshop, and performances by persons with DS, exhibition of DS & DSA as well as other VWOs. We are also having inflatables & henna painting as well. Therefore, in keeping with the mood of the event, we are hoping that you would send any of your magicians down to entertain the crowd from 2pm to 7pm.

JasonL - March 16, 2005 04:29 PM (GMT)
Ahh...I love performing for the less fortunate...I'll be there!!
Yup how many magis do they need?
Aloy - March 16, 2005 05:14 PM (GMT)
No confirmation on the number of magicians needed yet. Will keep you all updated as we go.
Erm, do note that this event is to generate awareness for the public, so the main target audience is the public. But some of the beneficeries will be there too.
I might be out of the country for this one. But if otherwise, I'll be there too.
[LV] - March 17, 2005 01:58 AM (GMT)
qns: if only can do Ultimate Transpo, Two Card Monte and bits of Ambitious Card, how long will the magican last in this event ? :ph43r:
[Ling] - March 17, 2005 02:35 AM (GMT)
Count me in. ;)
Time to get extra CIP hours. :P
- Ling.
Clement - March 17, 2005 05:16 AM (GMT)
Raoul - March 17, 2005 05:28 AM (GMT)
I'm in.
Some questions though :
1) Is there an upper limit of volunteers? The more the merrier, definitely, but 200 strolling magicians might be a bit overkill.
2) Not sure how these things work, but will the volunteers from SMC get together beforehand to deconflict and do effect and area management?
Eg : We don't want to have everyone doing ambitious card/CMH/etc. It would also be better to have clearly marked territories so as to avoid "Strolling Magic Car Accidents".

Aloy - March 17, 2005 07:10 AM (GMT)
Good points Raoul...
i think this is enough magicians for 1 event now.
So confirming the volunteers:
Kryp
revelc
senghoe
JasonL
Ling
Clement
Raoul
and tentative Morphine if he's around
Anyone else interested in performing there will be other chances. I'm connecting with a few NCSS VWOs to provide voluntary magicians for charity. So plenty of chance to do good B)
I expect not everyone can stay for the entire duration of the event so we might want to spread ourselves out over the time period.
And let's "deconflict" here in the forum. Volunteers please list 5 - 7 effects you will be mainly doing so that we can all try to do different stuff. You don't have to stick strictly to these effects but these will be your main arsenal. And it's ok if 1 or 2 of your routines overlap with another magicians, just not have everyone do the same stuff.
Also, follow up post the timing you will be available so that we can spread ourselves out.
On the day itself, we will meet at the beginning of the event and spread ourselves out so that it doesn't become a sessioning session.
My main routines:
Crazy man handcuff routine
Spoon bending routine
Bullet catching card routine
Sponge Rabbits
Simple Coin transpositions.
If i'm there, I'll be there from 2 - 5 pm.
Volunteers, please PM me your full name and I will try to get for everyone letters of acknowledgement for your contributions.
Thank you all so much for so heartily helping out :) I love SMC people
Aloy - March 17, 2005 07:35 AM (GMT)
Oh, and if anyone need CIP hours, please let me know in your PM and gimme the necessary details too. Thanks.
[Ling] - March 17, 2005 08:06 AM (GMT)
My arsenal :
Ambitious Card
2 Card Monte
Twisting the Aces
Simple coin stuff
Linking Rings simple routine
Simple IT stuff
Biddle trick/effect thingy...
That's about it, I guess.
I'll be there from 2 to 5 pm also.
- Ling.
Clement - March 17, 2005 10:42 AM (GMT)
Some questions here though...
Well, the public consists of different age groups...so is it better for each of us to have at least 1-2 magic targeted for children.

Probably about 5 mins...
Not to put anyone down but this is a public event. So our materials have to be "public" enough. I don't think they require full time pros with tons of experience but on our part we must at least ensure our materials are well prepared and presentable.
NOt only are we representing ourselves but we are also representing SMC. We definately don't want the public to think "Are our local magicians this bad??"
As Morphine said this event is also to generate awareness amoung the public. It must be positive awareness.
Perhaps other than listing out our effects to prevent a "strolling magic car accident", we should have a simple audition on the performers. Even charity shows should be treated with respect with the image of SMC in mind and it's also to ensure a continuous flow of charitable organisations asking us to perform.
What do you guys think about this?
Great responses so far! Keep up the good spirit SMC!! :g:

simple coin tricks
Ambitious card (using a bl*** deck)
3-card monte
some simple card tricks (mainly variations of a card choosen, lost in the deck n u found it)
tentatively, I'm free for the whole day. :)
Raoul - March 17, 2005 12:52 PM (GMT)
Morph, think you missed out Pam on your list.
To answer your PM here, I can't make it on the 2nd...gotta be in camp. I can meet you after the 8th of April if you just wanna have a quick run through.
Why don't we have a standby system? In case last minute some people can't make it (if they're ill or whatever), the standbys can be activated. This will allow other forum members to participate as well.
My effects :
Rubberband Routine (Includes CMH as one phase)
Cros Twist (3 card trick from Las Vegas Close-Up)
Card Warp
Sponge Balls
Recap
Coins Across
Colour Changing Knives*
Slydini's Paper Balls**
*I'm still hammering out a logical finish to my colour changing knives routine, so I may or may not include it.
**Depends on the location/situation. Can't have me littering on Orchard Road, else the next communtiy project you'll see me do will be CWO.
I should be there after 3pm.
This is going to be fun. :D Thanks for organising it.

Aloy - March 17, 2005 03:27 PM (GMT)
I'm saving Pam for another time B)
Buaya, Neo and Kevin, don't worry about missing this one. What I hope to have is maintain a constant flow of performing opportunities. So i dun want to have whole SMC take part in one event and have the volunteers burn out too quickly. A rotation system if you will, to give everyone a chance, and give all VWOs requiring us a share of magic. B)
JasonL's idea of a simple "audition" is a good one. If most of you can make it for the 2nd of April meeting, we can have it the "trail runs" during that.
Raoul, I wasn't thinking of running thru your routine actually, just wanted to session :)
For the volunteers who cannot make it for the 2nd of april meeting, we can have a quick run thru before the event starts. If any item we SERIOUSLY feel you shouldn't be performing, maybe you can take it out of your routines. Hope nobody will take offence to that :)
Again those needing CIP gimme the necessary details. And all volunteers give me the name you want on your Letter of Acknowledgment.
Thanks everyone!

i agree with jason.
the "audition" not only help to screen out the routines we do, it also helps to improve the routines we intend to do as well. cuz thru the audition, we can give ideas suggestions to improve the performance etc.
so in a way it is an "audition", but its also a session for us to pin point each other areas to take note, improve etc.
i think the nxt gathering on the 2nd april will b a great chance.
hope to see every1 who had confirmed helpin out this time round on tat day :)
Mabas - March 19, 2005 12:48 PM (GMT)
I missed this thread! I was in camp in sch these past few days. Ha. Well another time perhaps. Anyway, I think I need to really polish up my act first. :) Well, hope to see another magic opportunity soon.
GordonLi - March 24, 2005 09:03 AM (GMT)
actually, i can make it for the later half!
since im having a stage show b4 that, it easy for me to just reset and perform again.
this of course is if i can be allocated some slot on a stage (if there is), and i'll be happy to help out.
morph, is this possible?
JasonL - March 26, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
Alright. This thread is related to Morphine's a week ago. There are many of you wanting to perform for this strolling gig, newcomers who doesn't know the details pls refer to:
http://singaporemagiccircle.com/index.php?showtopic=1495I have spoken to the organiser and it has been confirmed we need 10
close-up performers for this gig. The time allocated to us is from 2pm to 7pm. We will need at least 2 performers present at every hour.
There will be a token fee of $20 per performer. The performers can have a choice to keep this fee or to donate it to SMC, which will then be used to fund our meeting rooms...competitions...events..prizes..etc
To be fair to everyone, I have decided to accept all prospective performers to this event and hold an audition on 2nd Apr to decide who shall perform for DSA. The audition will be held in a mingling style. The "judges" will be mingling and you shall engage them and perform just one effect (time constraint) and leave. So gear up, rehearse your lines, and volunteer!!
I will need your:
1) Name and nick
2) Time of availability (if you are free from 2-7 doesn't mean you will perform for 5 hours. But it will make the organiser's job easier as we can put you in any available time slot, so pls be certain)
3) Full support. SMC needs you guys to volunteer. So full commitment is required. Pls don't cancel last minute as it will be horrendous to find another performer and it will look bad on us.
So sign up straight away and do your part for our community!! Great performing chance too!
-Jason

count me in :)
i'm ok wif any slots betw 3-7pm
JasonL - March 26, 2005 03:44 PM (GMT)
Farid and Sherman, need to know the hours you can perform. If you're still not sure, pls try to confirm by our 2nd April meeting.
And for those who volunteered, pls prepare one good effect and a list of your close-up arsenal by 2nd April.
THanks for volunteering! It'll be a fun event!
illusionist - March 26, 2005 04:12 PM (GMT)
I am just damn curious why do we need an audition for charity event?? Its not like on that day you need to do the same effect and stuff... I don't see the point of having one. ;)
Winder - March 26, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
Charity shows should be a form of experience, what if someone don't get past the audition, does this mean the person will lose this chance of gaining this experience this time round.
Whatsmore i believe we don't have any slots for audition for 2nd April 2005, so you might want to settle with your own audition outside ?
GordonLi - March 26, 2005 05:01 PM (GMT)
we offered it free at first anyway (not that i really support this), but anyway, its still a kind gesture on their part.
btw, how many performers are we looking at for this event?

The reason why we are holding an audition is precisely due to the attitude you are showing. It's a charity event so we can do a shoddy job, afterall they owe us a big favour for being there.
Even for charity, the gigs must be respected and done to the best of our ability. That's why I am stressing so much on quality performances and commitment in timing, hence the audition and stating of availability. Three other reasons why there should be an audition is:
1) We are performing under the name of SMC. If any volunteer is allowed to perform and they give the wrong impression to the public by doing a lousy job then SMC will suffer.
2) We have limited number of opportunities for every event. Only 10 slots here, can't have the whole of SMC down. Hence an audition will sieve out who should go.
3) An audition is not just a test of your magical technique. It is also to see how you approach your audience and the image you project. It doesn't mean if you can only do five tricks (but do them well), you won't be selected amoung others who can do hundreds of tricks.
It doesn't mean if you don't have enough material for this event you'll never get to perform again. There are plenty of other gigs coming up. Perhaps you can take this event as an opportunity to learn and actually watch how the other performers do it.
And yes, the $20 is just a small fee to cover transport. Another reason why we are accepting this is because not everyone is a full pro like Alex with tons of performing experience and is fully worth the hundreds or thousands he may charge. The budding magicians need a place to start.
Volunteer away!!!
JasonL - March 27, 2005 01:37 AM (GMT)
One more thing, previously we would just call for volunteers and select those who come forward first or who the organisers feel should go this time. I felt that was too random and we shouldn't decide on who should perform without watching you guys first. Now we have decided to hold an audition to let everyone have a fair chance to prove themselves and show that they can perform.
You decide what you want.
