Title: People Dun Believe...
Description: some people are just like that...

R_jayz - April 19, 2005 01:55 PM (GMT)
Don't know whether this should go here or not... but anyway here goes..

Have you ever perform a card trick/effect and somebody and while most of them are amazed/shocked/think it is black magic etc. there will always be some people who simply say things like " yeah i know you are doing something but i don't know what it is" or "I know! I saw you doing *fill in the blanks*!" when they are just lying to show that they are an smarta**.

I know it's nothing but when they say the second one what do you people do? I mean, u can't just tell them it's not the way they think it is(thus telling them that there is another way) or simply keep silent(people will think they are right). Sometimes these kind of people just pisses me off... what do you think?

There is already a thread concerning hecklers.

Magic lies in the way you entertain.
If you entertain them, its magic.

To me, these people thinks they know it all. Just let them be and try not to perform to them next time. Performing for them will only dampen your spirits. Its their lost if they do not want to enjoy the magic.

But whatever the case, always maintain your composure. you can even think of somthing funny to say like " oh, you've seen this before ". Always try to think ahead of your audience.

Showing them the "WALAU" face may only make them feel better. Dont be disheartened. Continue to perform and you will only get better.

Sherman

if they think they so smart.. ask them... do u wanna perform?

he prob will say.... er i know how its done but i cant do them....

then u can say... well...if u cant do them.. then SH*T *P..... lol

hehe... that may be a bit extreme but well... hehe... depends how much he pisses u off.

Just pack up and explain that if you don't wish to be entertain, there are others who are willingly to be. So just leave if that is not commerical show or charity event, especially when ya doing it for friends.

no, the focus shud not be on whether they can do it or not, they shud not even have an idea as to how its done.

prove their theory wrong. show that it cannot be possible.

sometimes, the theory is so absurb u can pass it off with a comment and make a joke out of it "what, u actually think??!!".

magic is all abt making ppl on the edge of belief and disbelief.

R_jayz - April 22, 2005 03:30 PM (GMT)
*sparks flying out of brain*

what....? i dun understand. So exactly what shud i do to these people?

GordonLi - April 23, 2005 04:40 AM (GMT)
huh? i said, prove their theory wrong, or let their theory defeat itself.

Alexander - April 23, 2005 08:32 AM (GMT)
Well, i feel that isnt really a good thing to do. i mean, by proving their theory wrong you're telling them that their stupid and you're clever. its very confrontational.

2ndly, what if they happened to stumble upon a logic explanation? What do you say to the rest of the spectator.

Lastly, I saw this somewhere, it says that the spectator had made up their own theory, no matter what you do, they will still believe that they are right.

GordonLi - April 23, 2005 08:58 AM (GMT)
1stly, u dun have to do it confrontationally, theres a kind of scale, dont have to be too extreme.

the main purpose is just to tell others that its magical and theres no likely explanation.

u can even make use of the opportunity to turn it into a joke (as i said in a prev post)

if the person is a SUPER-HECKLER, u can even be able to shut him up.

2ndly, if the person gets the ACTUAL method, u still have to try and prove him wrong if possible.

in fact, i discovered that most magic work on the most direct method and most logical method, most ppl will be able to derive this, BUT, in the effect, the magician also tries to "prove" that the method he's using is not really the methods that he's using.

take for example IT, its so simple and direct, most ppl will suspect it, but during the presentation, they are led to believe otherwise.

lastly, if the spectator has a likely theory, and u dont disprove it, he'll take is as fact. COS, it offers an alternative one that will work. unless u disprove it, he'll accept it as fact.

take for example levitation, someone might think u use magnets. unless u prove him wrong, he has every reason to continue and think it is.

hmm seriously u could just shout to the audience before u perform , THOSE WHO WANNA ENJOY A MAGIC SHOW QUIETLY COME HERE , THOSE WHO DOESNT WANT , WELL STAY AWAY.

right I hate these kind of people but I deal with them all the time. Anyway what I normally do, is to show them a different trick, not a magic trick but a trick which will make them look stupid. I normally do stuff that I learned from heckler ( brian tudor ). I invent some of my own sometimes. Oh and get prepared to face these kind of people so you have to prepare these kind of tricks to make them shut up and think of you as a card god. Thats just my point of view, I'm sure many will disagree. Peace homies.

LarryDK - May 2, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)
It is a bad idea to make your audience stupid looking. Its all about your presentations, misdirections. Its not about the sleights that you are doing or tricks.

Talk about presentations. U know the trick, they dont know. So you already have the first up hand of the trick. When you present the trick, briefly tell them what u going to lead them to, and on the way, so your sleights, slowly. Most of the time, people will be thinking of what u saying than what your hand is doing. Ya, there is people that pin down on your hand, if u are in the crowd, and you notice this person inside the crowd, turn away from him/her and go on with the rest of the people on the other side than to the person. if you doing for a person, he pin down on you. Then you ask him, "you like my hands, sorry but you cant have them and i will be shy if you keep staring at my hands". Making him embrassed about it than strongly pushing him away will lead him away.

Misdirections: That is your most important tool to use in magic. If you are not confident in your magic, misdirect more than doing your sleights. Even if you are confident in your magic, misdirections are a good way to further lead them into the magic and blow them away. Misdirections like jokes, hand movements and etc are already good ways to misdirect. You are able to learn them in your journey in magic.

i not into magic like 20 -30 years, i only start it in like 5 months ago.

So all these is what i feel when i see DVDs, live performance and also advises from the rest.

You can choose not to accept wat i think.

Just my 2cent thoughts.
