Title: Charity Projects And New Moderator: Ning
Aloy - October 6, 2004 07:12 AM (GMT)
Dear people of singapore magic circle....
As suggested by many, we will be starting our little project/team for charitable works and performance. A seperate topic heading has been created to bring it out of "Shows and Bookings". The new topic heading is tentatively named "Pay it Forward".
Also, Ning has been made moderator and also be general in charge of this "development". So she is now our "Miss Charity Ambassador"! Yay! So everyone go support her!
Let's do the little we can shall we all? :)
Cheers

First of, thanks for taking time to read this. It's a good sign because it means it already interests you and that you borther to find out more...
Right, please check out the Singapore Magic Circle Forum->Fellowship of the Ring->Pay It Forward thread if you haven't already, for more details.
In a nutshell... inspired by David Copperfield's ongoing Project Magic, we're trying to form a dedicated TEAM of Magis (new/ seasoned/ young/ matured/ male/ female/ others/ right-handed/ left-handed/ it all doesn't matter!!!) who passionately want to make the world a better place!
Just how?
...By paying it forward, so to speak. Performing for others not only boosts your confidence levels (something that can only be nurtured by practise and real performances ...not by the mountainloads of videos and books you study religiously).
As a Magician, you must all have realised how magic can make even the most depressed friend smile, or get cold strangers to become friends. Magic... is quite simply, Magic! So why don't you use your skills and talents (or hobby, as most of you would beg to defer ;) ) and make people happy? Make them SMILE!!!
Thus far, the following courageous Magis have offered their dedication and time for future events. They are: Morphine, illusionist, yujie, ren8585, JamKid and myself... :D I'm sure there are more to come... Huron, Kev, Daryl... and you (yes, whoever you are... who's reading this right now!)
If you feel you'd like to take up this "challenge" and really want to make the world a BETTER PLACE for those less fortuneate than us, PLEASE take the initative.
Imagine the wonders you could do for the kids at the Children's Cancer Foundation and more!
Make a STEP FORWARD now.
I firmly believe, you'll never look back with regrets. :)

BuaYa - October 10, 2004 06:01 AM (GMT)
How does this project benefit the people who need it? I'm a little confused.
Ning - October 10, 2004 12:18 PM (GMT)
hi Buaya...
it's pretty simple ... :) have u seen the film/ documentary about Patch Adams? He's a doctor by training but chooses to be an entertainer. Dressing himself up as a clown, he (and his team) proceed to cheer up patients (kids suffering from terminal illness, old folks battling cancer, etc) so they can recover faster (you already know how the mind worksin mysterious and powerful ways) ...so this healing process works on a psychological level as well, besides typically feeding them medication.
if we can make this world a better place for them, so to speak, with what we can do... why not? instead of clowns, lets do magic for the kids @ the children's cancer foundation for instance. it's a form of chairty, paying it forward.
it would be great if we can start that, but we need a pool of volunteers for it. it's not going to be "cool and funky" like T.H.E.M but it might get emotionally straining on a deeper level. ...i hope i was able to explain more in detail. should u have any doubts, feel free to get in touch with me.

hey..
well. in school myself and 6 others do a CIP project called the healing of magic. i think the website is at
healing of magic and we go to NUH once a week and teach the young patients there magic. we've been doing this since april or so, but are currently stopped due to our exams. we intend to continue this after the exams though.
the benefits of this programme can be found in the website.. (if it's working).
just thought it might be useful.

Hey thanks for the link rh89
Yes, we're trying to do something like that... more of performing for kids when we visit them at the hospitals... not really teaching them magic as not all of them may want to really study it.
care to join us? we're working out something with CCF... it's be after the exam period, somewhere in nov/dec.
rh89 - October 13, 2004 09:43 AM (GMT)
welcome Ning..
but after the exams i'll probably be carrying on that project with my friends..
maybe you'd like to join us instead? we're planning on expansion to other hospitals. actually a lot of them get really interested after we show them a few simple ones.. and they dont quite study it, but they still like learning it a lot.

Hi dear... a couple of the other magis at SMC have already volunteered and we're forming a team so we can do this as a group. Thanks for the offer though. At present we wouldn't be teaching them tricks but doing performances (stage/ walk around/ etc) for various charity organisations like CCF, old folks homes, etc. Too bad you didn't join us for the Shairty Elephant one last month... i bet you'd love it!

Hi ning,
Just got a crazy idea that come to my mind hahaha.. Y not we sell some of our magic stuff to raise some fund for charity as well hahaha that will be cool I guess.. Hmm just a crazy thought may it practical maybe not ... Hahahaha is up to you the chairty angel to decide hahaha.. :D
kryptikalism - October 17, 2004 04:13 AM (GMT)
this is a really good idea. using magic to benefit charity seems to be one of the best ways to do it. i'm all for it, but can only join you guys in december, cos of exams...
GordonLi - October 17, 2004 10:55 AM (GMT)
welcome then, great to have more ppl around. :)
Ning - October 17, 2004 12:18 PM (GMT)
Hmmm... Illusionist, meaning selling some self made tricks? We could explore thhat idea... the main idea is simply to perform for homes but yeah, it's great to brainstorm for fresh ideas B) Keep 'em rolling guys...
illusionist - October 17, 2004 12:24 PM (GMT)
Self made tricks, Gimmicks, that types of trick you can find in Magic wand and some joke shop one hahaha anything that is legal lah or even kids magic set also can just to rasie some fund for them too. Perfrom for them to make them happy raise fund for them in charity event to help them a bit in financally.. We can try to set up a booth to do that hahahaha.. Just a crazy idea lah... :P

I have to say i'm not crazy about the idea. Self made gimmicks? But we can only sell to other magicians? That's too small a target pool in my opinion. Also borders at the line of piracy and other boring issues.
For fund raising, it may be more efficient, if anyone is willing, to maybe perform magic shows but give the proceeds to charity? Services is probably a better product to offer. Maybe a fund raising magic show and sell tickets and say all proceeds will go charity or something.
You guys play with it. B)

Here is another idea y not try for each performance we impress the person we perform to and ask him or her to give a little donation hahahaha.. Should work out that way... If sell stuff we do some think like floating rose and seal it up in a box to sell it or those cheap tricks that we can find in magic wand and joke shops or some very cool design Singapore Magic Cicrle T-shirts hahahhaha... Or take photo like the gamble King holding a fan hahahha... or.... hmm can't think of any right now.. Cos I find that selling things for charity is quite good cos all primary sch are doing it hahaha... Think of things to sell.. :D
zinally - October 23, 2004 02:38 PM (GMT)
Agree with morphine. Selling gimmick is not a good idea but hand made puzzles can be better. But I think raise fund by public performance can be achieved e.g. meet corporation like Sentosa Island, NTUC Club, Public Library, C.C. etc and ask for the venue. I ever do performance in NTUC Resort & PWD Club . They welcome the idea very much..(I remember I got $200 - $400 per performance)
