Title: Why More Males Than Female Magicians?
Description: Why ah?
HarapanOng - April 26, 2005 11:00 AM (GMT)
I noticed that many magicians are males. Most in fact. (hey girls dun kill me.)
No have you wondered why magicians tend to be males instead of females? What is your EXPLANATION??? Men are aggresive and like to fool? Males are genetically more interested in the wonders of nature?
WHY? Please pour out your thoughts.

Guys like to entertain Girls, and Girls like to be entertained by Guys.
Duh ~ What the heck am i talking again ~
darkmagician - April 26, 2005 11:10 AM (GMT)
is there supposed to be a reason?
it is a coincidence i think. cos magic is ultimately based on interest so it is up to a person...
it also depends on the surroundings and influence like u r often exposed to magic
well thats my view...
rh89 - April 26, 2005 11:12 AM (GMT)
I don't know why.
But then again, I'm not a guy, but I like magic, for unexplainable reasons, which I'm not too sure of myself.
GordonLi - April 26, 2005 11:58 AM (GMT)
its cultural and historical.
magic takes root in ancient day sharmans.
gambler's also contributed to many modern day sleight of hand.
hundreds of years ago, magic was performed mainly on the streets.
ask urself, how may females were shamans, were gamblers, or allowed to perform on the streets?
its socially unacceptable then.

Ask Mr. 46 Chromosomes.
Ya, I'm a female magi, I still prefer hanging in magic shops rather than shopping or whatever.
I have no idea too...

There is another reason y there is less female magicains... cos every sucessful magicain will have a women behind to support him.. lol~ I know I have a very good gf that support me :P
ziLin - April 26, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
i don't think all girls like to do make up and shop for clothes etc.. i, for one, don't. oh wells.
anyway, i think that there are more males magicians than female magicians because of character. ok, i'm stereotyping a bit here, but i think it's possible to say that most males are self-centred (i.e egocentric) so they feel the need to impress and be better than the rest of the population. i'm sure magic is more of a performance art, definitely not used to show that you are more competent, but I THINK, there is somehow, always this "rush" in knowing that you know something but someone else doesn't.
so yeah, males are more inclined to pick up magic since they think it MIGHT be a morale booster..
whereas for females, MOST of them do not see the need in competing and would rather spend their stuff sharing their thoughts, feelings and emotions with each other rather than trying to show that they know something which their friends don't.
so to females, i would think that magic is more like a form of entertainment for them, to talk about etc, rather than to perform to the rest of their friends lest their friends think that this girl is being too showy!
uh yeah, so that might be why there are more male magicians?
(this text is full of stereotypes. :( )
*by the way, i agree with gordie's point too.
yujie - April 26, 2005 05:04 PM (GMT)
i always feel that girls who are into magic are not normal....before i'm called a MCP.....what i meant is that, they look things not only on the surface, but also willing to use their heart to see.......berry chim hor......i also dun know what am i writing

Or maybe, I'm just not like "most girls"
Defile - April 27, 2005 12:30 PM (GMT)
There is the demand and supply. The demand for fascinating things to happen is always there. And if this demand can't be met, people will take the initiative to provide the supply. And usually, males are more initiative and will offer to take up magic first to provide for the demand.
Also, guys are more mischievious and want to venture into the unknown. And since magic is full of mysteries, its like striking lottery. Thats why more guys get sucked into the world of magic than girls.
Well, you get the point..
GordonLi - April 27, 2005 01:47 PM (GMT)
i cant rmb where, but i read that its cos males have some innate character to want and be superior. its like something inborn that they wanna do what others cant, but for the same reason, most guys are interested from young, to "prove" to their friends.
im not trying to condemn or anything, it might be true, its something subconcious i guess..
Barney - April 27, 2005 02:13 PM (GMT)
Food for thought (dunno if i'm off topic or not):
Every time i do an effect, girls want to know how it is done, whereas guys want to replicate what i have done.
For example:
Most girls i know say: "Wow! How did you do that?"
Most guys i know say: "Wow! Teach me leh!"
I wonder why.. B)

well.. mine would be the opposite... girls would go "how do you do that?!" and demand you to teach them(some pretty girls are really hard to resist...but of course i didn't leak out the secret), where guys would simply try to stop me from acomplishing the trick(except for those friendly ones), to show that hey are extremly intelligent and magic will not work on them. I guess guys really have the mentality of being superior....
StrykerZ - April 28, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)
i think its also partly cuz men have an advantage when it comes to audience management and talking skills, dont get me wrong I'm not saying women cant, just that well.. we can do it better lol. :!!: jk..
yea well i think most people perceive the males is, they are strong and dominant, females is like total opposite.
just my opinions..
Blackwing - May 7, 2005 08:31 AM (GMT)
Ummm magic starts with 'm' so there are more men? I've seen lots of women doing wagic cos that starts with 'w'. Ok I'll shut up that was extremely lame.
Anyway I think its because females are more shy and they tend to concentrate on academic stuff. Males normally doze of during class and think of stuff they saw on tv.
Male : Oh my god David Blaine is super cool. I think I'm going to be a magician when I grow up!
Female: yes teacher I've done my homework.
I guess males are more aggresive and less pai seh also.
Raoul - May 7, 2005 11:33 AM (GMT)
Oh come on now.
If women started getting into magic, who's going to do all the cooking and cleaning?
:g: :D
I'm kidding, put the pitchforks away.
Ben - May 7, 2005 03:21 PM (GMT)
It's true that girls will go wow after you performed a trick. But guys will ask how you did that. Guess that explains the difference in number between males and females magicians.

IMO males got more freetime than females who gossi* away =p
>.<
Navarrone - May 9, 2005 10:15 AM (GMT)
Cuz i think guys tend 2 do more of entertainment stuff...u noe...an example will be a comedian...u hardly see female comedian...maybe the same applies to magician....u noe...comedy magician....its quite weird for a female to freak people out...as in...female freak out a guy...tat could be rather weird...

iamthewalrus - May 10, 2005 03:35 AM (GMT)
Aha.
See huh, it's all about HIStory. The greatest magicians are MEN. Harry Houdini, Davids Copperfield and (ugh) Blaine. OK, maybe not greatest.
But the most appealing magicians are men. That's most of the question answered already. All the talk about audience management and how men are better or stronger or more assertive or whatever is just so-so-so. The crucial thing is how the role models are male, and females are usually the "lovely assistant", or they have to play SECOND fiddle to a man= The Pendragons, Lawrence and Priscilla, etc.
So huh, it's really about HIStory huh, not quite Michael Jackson, but I digress. The big names are men, so more men would be attracted. Just another one of your vicious cycles.
Male magicians in HIStory, like Merlin or Obi-Wan Kenobi (bad example), are powerful and noble. Female ones, (Margan le Fay!) are foul b********es.
The linguistic aversion still persists! Today, Harry Potter portrays men as Wizards, and women, those evil creatures, are Witches. See, the female of the species, would logically shun such a fearsome occupation.
Once more, HIStory.
illusionist - May 10, 2005 03:40 AM (GMT)
Hmm I like female to freak me out lol.. So female out there reading this come on take up magic as a hobbie you will love it and start to freak me out by perfroming to me this noob lol...

hmm..... femal freaking a guy out. all i can say is " LOL!"
as miss Ning had said, she had nt been to a date, *ahem*. yea, cuz if a lady freaks a guy out, the guy will feel tht the lady is more "superior". so if the guy go out with her, the lady will be the dominant. throughout the history, male always go to work and female will stay at home to take care of the house (no offence), therefore, there shld be less female magician than male.
*if these words offended any female magicians out there, i apologise, Sorry :(* mi just stating the facts......

...Not offended but I was really only kidding about the date part :P I disagree with you though, about the whole dominatrix... er, domineering issue. Why must it be that way? It depends on the guy then...
Well, each to their own really. People have their own different preception of things.
But!
To state more "updated" facts, it'd be good to know that most women these days actually do step out and work for $$$ income and don't do the "stay home and do housework" thing anymore. Maybe a few generations ago, but most married couples don't do that nowadays...
Just letting you know, in case you have some unrealistic expectations of your future wife/ girlfriend ^_^

haha, guess im wrong again. i agree with you Miss Ning, about the different perception of things. And one more thing, you will get a boyfriend sooner or later :P (most probably your partner will be a magician too, cause both of you have the same interest and he will not be "left out". )

j.shurtz - May 17, 2005 02:25 AM (GMT)
i really think it boils down to the idea that some men are egoistic and feel the need to be superior and girls are more content to be sort of fascinated by something and not feel the need to assert their superiority. you might say they're more mature and want to do more constructive things with their lives than be admired by a group of people making noises like "ooh aah." or, from a US perspective, the idea of males being obssessed with superiority is innate in "the american dream," where the son is supposed to be the all-star-shining-pride of the family.
most of the guys i know are intimidated by girls who are "better" or "smarter" than them. i dated a guy for 9 months, and since we were in the same classes it's inevitable we did some hw together... we had a couple of "bad moments" where he was upset by the idea that it was usually me helping him with homework. he felt "stupid" and sort of inferior because i was a bit better at spanish, math, english.
i can't help but notice that i've been a really competitive person all my life esp in tennis, where locally, it's a male dominated sport, and while karen might not be competitive at sports, she was extremely competitive academically. we've both gotten into this card hobby and lots of other hobbies that are "male dominated." karen is definitely NOT a "girly" type of girl, but when we're together we certainly go "girly" and discuss which cardist we think is hotter and which cards look prettier :D
