Title: Help Someone!
wizebuddha - May 8, 2005 02:43 AM (GMT)
I have been playing around with magic now for around 2 years on and off and have a great love for the art. most tricks that come up i can learn one way or another these tricks have earned me some good cash on my travels. i never reveal my tricks and love to learn new things for my act. however this dark force has entered my world in the name of Derren Brown the saviour of modern magic and mentalism thrusting it into the mainstream like a no one has done before, making people like david blane look like a young paul daniels (sorry paul). i hate not knowing how things work, especially when it freaks me out. what frustrates me is its very hard to learn his act i mean there are books all over the place that explain nlp and other systems but, how can you really get an act as amazing as that? is it possible? i know its a mixture of body reading, pychology, hypnosis amoung other things. if there were a collage you could go to, or something you can join to learn this stuff i would be there like yesterday. does anybody know anywhere where i can learn this for my act, are there books dvds around that go further than the basic mentalist nlp thing. i would love to know the science behind this great mans act, how does he do the horse racing trick although i have an idea or the arcade game trick how can a few flashes put someone under or even the scary street tricks where he gets one person to say anothers address. these are things i must sus out before i die. please someone must know something...
a desperate man
if you can help in anyway email me
(web master i hope i dident break any rules on your site talking about nlp and all that)

Go read his books.

Pardon me but u sound more like a fan of derren, rushing into a forum asking people how to perform those effects, rather than a professional magician who has performed 2 over years earning good pays in their shows.
Anyway, just to say abit of what you wanted to know
Derren brown started off with doing card tricks and gradually moved on to mentalism.
He has learnt important stuff with regards to hypnosis, nlp, muscle reading and the likes. Its been known that he utilises these to achieve the effects. A correct combination of each. There have also been rumors that he uses stooges.
Just a note, I have both his absolute magic and pure effect and even the devil's picturebook VHS (yes i spend over 300 bucks in total due to wanting to learn his stuff), but none of the stuff in there are close to what he performs on TV shows.
However, i do have some lecture notes which does teach methods on how 'speak' to the subconcious mind to force a thought or something. however, it uses similar principles to NLP, body language, etc
Since you already have some idea as to what he uses to perform, why not try getting some books on similar topics, study them and try them out. Banachek's book called psychological subtleties is a good book to start on learnig stuff to 'speak' to the spectators subconcious in a very discreet manner.
Another good variation of a performer who uses subtleties is Luke Jermay in his DVD, or his books, building blocks or 7 deceptions.
You can also try out In addition,Kenton Knepper's Wonder Words Series if u are feeling really really rich
Anyway, its quite weird for someone to barge into the forum, requesting for help without even introducing yourself. Maybe you can try posting an intro and then more people might be willing to help you.
Cheers B)

NLP.......u mean neuro linguistic programming? hmm.......
Andy - May 8, 2005 07:24 AM (GMT)
Yup
NLP = neuro linguistic programming
Sorry for the use of abbreviations.
Its one of the methods used to speak to the 'subconcious' of a person, usually used to motivate.

okie, i'm aware of that. There's a big wave of NLP happening now.....i've mixed feelings for it. andy, u too from NTU rite? next time if we have a chance to meet, we can tok more about it. ^_^
Andy - May 8, 2005 07:47 AM (GMT)

actually, i only know a little bit of NLP....but i just feel that some people are mis-using it for monetary reasons. talk more about it when we meet up :)

I am actually quite curious abt NLP but i am skeptical about it's power and whether it really can influence as much as it is claimed to be.
Would like to have it tried on me sometime...
BuaYa - May 8, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
Aloy, my thouhghts exactly. I think some are more suggestable then others. Just like mypnosis.

waoh next time paragraph your essay please >.<
Anyway like Andy pointed out if you are looking for Derren Brown's type of mentalism using NLP, suggestive techniques, cold reading I really suggest Luke Jermay's material.
In case you don't know Luke Jermay is one of the major consultants for Derren Brown's TV specials and stage performances. Start with his book 7 Deceptions or the DVD version known as SkullDuggery.
Just to add on, you can take up NLP courses in Singapore too, don't ask me where but these courses do not teach you how to apply NLP to entertainment but mostly teaching you how to use them on yourself or in business.
An alternative to these courses are NLP books, which I prefer. You can borrow them from the library or get them from borders or kinokuniya.
Once you get them just self study and I'm sure you will learn alot.
Hope this helps. -_-

for starters, i recommend getting Building Blocks By Luke Jermay. this books is great for starters onto mentalism and bizarre tricks. try to gt 7 deceptions by luke jermay too, as building blocks talks abt things on hw to improve on the "deceptions" frm the book.
oops, do i sounded lyk an advertiser? hmm.....

While it is good to have a dream and a goal (to be like Derren Brown) you need to learn what he learned and go through what he went through to achieve it. You cannot jump into the middle of someone's life and take over, but have to start at the beginning and work your way through it to get where he is today. Fortunately, you live in a world he never had as a child... you have the Internet and sources of inspiration and knowledge undreamed of when Derren began.
My advice: begin with one thing you wish to do as a mentalist. Don't try to learn everything at once. Pick one effect you would like to achieve and then people can point you in the right direction for gaining that one simple goal. When you have mastered it, move on to the next.

Hey dude, use the ' ENTER ' button more often man. Your post was way too long and there were no paragraphs. Crap! I'm sounding like my geography teacher.
Anyway, I don't really like NLP and suggestive leaning as these techniques do not work all the time. If you manage to do it right I guess its cool.
lllusion112 - May 23, 2005 09:22 AM (GMT)
wierd, i do suggestion and NLP effects all the time and they will work. you should choose your spec wisely and plan your tricks. mostly hecklers will be diff to do suggestions to them when you first start your trick. try doing some other mentalism tricks that doesnt need suggestions or NLP to them first, this will "scare" them, thus causing them to be not so "rebellious" as before. ;)
