Title: Dragon Rice Vase
Aloy - May 20, 2005 03:30 AM (GMT)
This one is so good it looks like trick photography. It's US$1.5 K thou so i think i might wait a few more weeks before getting it. :ph43r:
Effect (cheesy):
In the Dynasty of Sea-Ling, food was a problem and famine was a constant threat. To insure against famine, the Golden Dragon of Plenty was appeased by a sacred vase filled with rice at all times. This was kept in the Temple of Sea-Ling. One night a beggar broke into the temple and tried to steal the rice. To conceal his theft, he used a pure white china silk in place of the missing rice. However the Golden Dragon was not fooled and with great anger, he devoured the silk. The frightened beggar quickly replaced the rice and harmony was restored.
Effect (general):
A large silk placed inside a clear, transparent glass vase very visually and suddenly vanishes.

is it the Fan tat cost $1.5k ?
Aloy - May 20, 2005 04:16 AM (GMT)
No...the fan is ungimmicked. Nor is sleeves necessary if that's your next question B)
But stop fishing already and just drool at something we cannot afford :g:
The vanish is really fun to watch. It's like those 80s chinese ghost comedies where the fairy/ghost/priest can just appear and disappear suddenly.
GordonLi - May 20, 2005 06:25 AM (GMT)
wow, that was fast! highly impressive and visual...
but, its not very "magical"...
Aloy - May 20, 2005 08:01 AM (GMT)
Why is it not very magicial? I cannot thing of a lot of stage props that's more magicial than this :P
I just cannot stop watching the vanishing video. It's so 80s chinese movie special effects. B)
That particular item in the video btw, is hand built and a special collectors item. Only 20 sets were manufactured, 4 sets remain, and the maker (Richard Gerlitz) promises none will be ever made again.
Anyone has US$1500 want to donate to SMC?

unless this vase is unbreakable, to perform with such an expensive thing is a definitely no for me even if i were to own one. maybe it can be more of like an "only-for-display" item? :P

Eh... it's kinda ugly honestly :P Effect's ok I guess, but not totally awesome that it has such a strong impact that totally stunned me.
I can think of a whole lot of other things I can get for that kinda money really... Like maybe a silent, compact vacum cleaner and a parlour table that comes with a chipped vase :ph43r:
But then hey, people of all ages - young & old, have different tastes in things (like things in the 80s) right, Mr Aloy? ;)

this effect is fast and visual, but it is comparable to say a vanishing cane.
ppl can guess how its done...
using the analogy of the vanishing cane agane, ppl need not know the technical details of how the cane "vanishes", but they can get close enough, hence, the effect loses the magical appeal.
the only thing abt such effects is that is fools the eyes... its like fukai's stage act, just eye candy, nice to see, but the beauty of magic lies in psychology, which visual effects (such as these) tend to lack.

Yeah, you are right. Just presenting it as it is in the video is very effective way of ruining a very good method. -_-
But I'm sure we can all brainstorm up a great presentation and routine that it can be a part of once someone gets it. ;)

I had plans to include a variation of this as an Illusionette in Book 3 of my PVC Pipe and Dollar Store Illusions for the REALLY, REALLY Cheap Illusionist! My first version of the effect was called "The Little Wonder" and sold for a dollar (US) back in the 1950's when I was just a kid. In that version, a red silk placed into a glass changed instantly and visibly into a green one. My friend Spellbinder told me this effect was showing on video, so I dropped by to make sure I wasn't taking anyone else's idea before I published it in the book, but it looks like one of DeKolta's ideas, so the methods is old enough to be in the public domain by now and I will definitely include it. The PVC pipe version costs about $10 US to make. You can see some of the other Illusions in Books 1 and 2 on Spellbinder's website:

I just posted Jim Gerrish's proposal for PVC Pipe Illusions Book 3 on-line at my Web Site (http://www.magicnook.com) and it does, indeed, contain a PVC pipe version of the vanishing silk (you can also use it to make a feather flower bouquet instantly vanish). Check the table of contents for Book 3, Illusion # 2.
