Navarrone - June 20, 2005 11:11 AM (GMT)
This is my first try....so pardon me if u spot anything wrong and stuff....just excitied to try the new digital cam tat my dad brought back....its nt really a video cam....so the quality is very lousy...but still visible.....hope you guys out there can gimme some advices...thx...quite crappy here and dare....please pardon me cuz this is really my 1st try....

The reason why i kept showing my fan is that,it is very ugly, trying to get it rite, but i dunno y it looks as if it is perfect right here, maybe it is not close enough...

My one-handed fan sux....i noe....

The Vid

GordonLi - June 20, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
gross

perhaps it will be more useful if u do a routine, instead of a string of showy moves.

Navarrone - June 20, 2005 11:30 AM (GMT)
erm....okie...
thx for that comment....i guess....

Navarrone - June 20, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
The reason that i did not do a routine is because the cam i'm using does not record sound.....cuz it is a digi cam suppossed to take pictures...oh well....so there is nth much i can do other den getting some visual effects...hope u understand....

illusionist - June 20, 2005 12:02 PM (GMT)
Ok your vid is not really well done but if you can just get closer to the cam don't move in and move back lol.. :D

GordonLi - June 20, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
im sorry i sounded a little harsh earlier on.

but anyway yea, some points to improve on:
1. distance (brought up by mac)
2. twisting of the body (eg during the throw vanish, it seems that the card was just placed back on the deck)

since u were unable to film a routine, i guess its alright. u might want to try filming silent routines like matrix or something.

Clement - June 20, 2005 01:12 PM (GMT)
I won't say its bad neither its good...

I feel the main thing is try not to move towards and then away from the cam...kinda makes people dizzy

But i salute your courage for making a video and posting it here...Keep up the good work ^_^

LarryDK - June 20, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
Hmm, Ya agree with the rest, the moving abt is not good loh.

Hmm, but i got a comments about the snap change, u did it far away, so i cant see it well. Maybe u need to snap it? To have more visual impact.

As for the rest. cant see it well. Sorry.

Alexander - June 20, 2005 01:46 PM (GMT)
Gross doesnt seem very constructive.
Btw, i think the moving front and back plus the music gives me a slight headache.

But anyway, nice try considering its your first video. Film in the morning if there isnt enough lighting. Its hard to see.

I like the last colour change.

Markiebeth - June 20, 2005 02:19 PM (GMT)
Ditto on moving back and front, makes viewing rather difficult. However I applaud your courage to post a video so keep going!

I guess it would be better if you can just stay close to the cam. Images are a little blurred thus not bringing out the full effects of the color changes. (snap, Erdnase)

thx guys....i fully appreciate yr comments....thx for spending yr time watching this crap....thx for the comments....i'll take note of it and improve on it...thx..

thx for spending yr time watching this crap....

Don't depriciate yourself my friend, we are all learning :)

It's really not that bad actually, i'm sure Gordie didn't mean to sound so harsh in his 1st post :)
I think perhaps the grip some of us have is that these are some of the most over-seen stuff on internet videos. Snap change, shapeshifter change, Erdnase change, tenkai palm. Very Ellusionist/Blaine inspired stuff.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with these sleights, these are great sleight created by greats of magic (not invented by David Blaine, Ellusionist, or Oz Pearlman, by the way. B) But I'm sure you already know that ;)). Just that we have all seen too much of them, by too many people who got ripped by Ellusionist B)

But to your credit, all the sleights that you did, you did them smoothly and well. All pretty well executed.
For maximum impact, try to set it up such that the colour changes are between 2 very contrasting face designs. From a very low value spots card to a very high value spots card of a different colour, or from a spots card to a picture card. It really makes a difference (try it on yourself and see). Because your camera was struggling to capture colour, i almost missed your snap change because it's only the difference of 1 spot. Looking up when you do a tenkai vanish is an important subtlety which is sometimes overlooked but you remembered, good.

For the plus stuff. Your posture and stance at the very beginning of the video is very good.Your head is up, looking at the audience (camera), legs slightly apart with weight evenly distributed, hands firmly in front of you as you do the fan. A confident looking stance and very good when done with the music, a attention grabbing posture. That's good showmanship.
But later you begining fidgeting and contorting around quite a bit, to the point that I thought you were dancing to the music  :P
And you did the fan many times which i don't quite understand. Again it looked like you were dancing to the music with that :)

All in all it's quite a good effort. Video is a really bad media to present magic so I don't blame you for lacking context. It is very difficult to effectively communicate patter/plot in a video without a live audience in the video, so it's usually limited to very visual stuff and manipulative acts.
That's why we have meet ups to show each other our stuff ;) Do come for one of it and show us your stff :)

The rest have already pointed out the other areas that you should look out for. Keep going at it, and keep it up :)

I'm trying to post less in the magic sections. But this time round, i can't really help it.

Zi Yong, you really looked as though you were dancing a little. Oh ya. Like the others said. QUIT MOVING. Back, forth, back, forth etc..

Made me real giddy. Some of your movements, i comprehend not.

But nice try for a first vid. Next time round, take some time to add 'subtitles' to explain what we're supposed to be seeing (e.g. "The card goes in here, and... out there!") :P

And maybe throw in more video editing too (e.g. effects like zoom in and zoom out. However, do NOT over do that..). B)

Btw, what cam are you using anyway?

Navarrone - June 20, 2005 05:46 PM (GMT)
Aloy
wow, that is a very long comment right there, really appreciate it,thx...
The reason I did the fan so many times is because it did not look tidy from where i was,but I dunno that when it is on the camera,it looks as if it was perfect of something, haha, the reason i would get all these Blaine/Ellusionist stuffs were because I need to get visual cuz my cam dun support sound.. :(
so it was rather a no-patter kinda stuff, dun get me wrong,I'm not trying to prove that I'm right here, just explaning some of yr doubts....

Barney
Here u purple dinosaur, haha, thx for yr comment too, will take note of what you say...Oh yahz...I'm using Window Movie Maker, anyone knows some better software?

Yah i understand :) That's why i said it's understandable why there's not much plot/context, coz it's difficult to do those well in a video, even if you have sound :)

Well, keep the good points and keep going at it. And come join us for the outing this Friday :)

comon, it's good enough to be a first video. and NOPE it's not crap, your video is going into my folder name "MAGIC from Singaporean"

Seriously, I got this folder on my desktop, inside all the card tricks/moves done by our fellow SMC members.

--------------
LIGHTS :
Regarding the lightings, some Clear White Lights might help. Because digi-cam capture image better under bright white lights.

MOVEMENTS:
Eh..... really alot of movement. My eyes are looking at your palm and deck most of the time and if they move less-er and perform, it's BETTER.

Some comments
Snap Change :
Maybe from a 9 of Spades to a Picture card will be STUNNING as the effect are more clear you change from a number to a picture.

Erdnase Colour Change :
Maybe when you going to change the 10 of... eh... let say it's Red-10 .....spread your fingers out instead of covering them up so tighty, people might think there is another card in your palm,

then when you going to do the color change the 6 of spades appear, in that last min, close your fingers + rub the card as if you rubbing away the Red-10 (rub by shaking left and right on the Red-10 card ) and allow the 6 of spades to collect all the applauding and take a bow.

Did I explose any trick/s above ?
