Title: Originality ???
Symmatrix - June 21, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
David Copperfield, Jeff Mcbride, Lance Burton, Brett Daniel , Julianna Chen, Franz Harary, David Blaine, Criss Angel, Darwin Ortiz, Marco Tempest and Devo.
I believe that most of those magicians out there knows who these great stars are. Ever wonder why they are so famous in magic ? Simple: originality.
I strongly believe in orginality and creativity in magic. These magic superstars manage to get their reputation and fame through originaility.
Lets start with David. Just by his name we know that his illusion show is one of the best of all. The reason behind this was, his presentation was so well choreographed that you just being brought away from it, even you are a magician. What’s more his illusion is one of a kind and you will never see others trying to outstand him.
Jeff Mcbride, a man with full of creativity. Look at his act, most of his act goes with a storyline and a theatre theme. Same goes to his outfit, his dressing has made a deep impression on us. Japanese style clothing, with ancient mask and those long beautiful streamers. What’s more, he is more specialised in stage act.
Lance Burton, classic of the classics. Let’s take his Champion Act. Dove production. His kind of act is more to the western style with grand tuxedo and elegant cane performing under the lamp post. His act of dove production and the suit he is wearing creating a kind of feeling, that brings you to childhood days that you used to be amazed and amused for the first time you saw magic.
Brett Daniel, one of the master of magicians. His show brings us to variation of magic from close up , levitation to illusion. You will experience all kinds of magic which Brett Daniel brings to you. As he is master of every kind of magic he performs.
Julianna Chen, proudly to say one of the lady asians, which makes it to Las Vegas. Her card manipulation is one known of the fastest and most magnificient card manipulations in existance. Bringing the classical Chinese act blended with the card manipulation, makes her style and presentation unique.
Franz Harary, is one of the greatest consultants and buildes of modern great illusions without any doubt. His unique kind of illusions which makes most of us jealous of him. His originality in building of illusion makes him one of the great illusionists known around the world.
As for the other superstars, I believe you can try yourself and see what their originality is that makes them outstanding from the other magicians.
Nowadays, I tend to see lots of youngster magician hopping into magic as a kind of hobby. Some even go to the extent in thinking about is as a carreer. Its great to hear that the circle of magic is building up,but they might being lead the wrong way.
Once. I came a cross a teenger who wanted to show me some magic. Well, I accepted his request and he did me some card tricks. What I was expecting was some cool routine that he would gonna show me. But to my surprise, he asked me to pick a card from the shuffled deck. Took my selected card and inserted back to the middle of the deck and excuted a 'P**s' and showed me that my selected card was now at the top of the deck. He ended the trick here and thanked me for giving him my time to watch him.
Well, to me I was shocked to see that the teenager performed a 'P**s' technique and says that he was performing magic. Its too ridiculous to hear and see this. As we all know that 'P**s' is a technique that we use to combine with our card routine. Not to use as a magic effect itself.
With all this misled and misunderstanding of performing magic, this might create a great disaster.Teenager may tend to follow this principle and continue performing magic then totally forget about his presentation and creating originality in magic.
One other thing which spoils the art of magic is “Show Off”. Singaporean teenagers, nowadays like to show off with their extraoridinary skills. Especially to their friends, family members or even to strangers. This kind of show off attitude will kill his creativity and originality in magic. Where he has start to search for more magic secrets and magic items to continue his show off, may be one serious concern.
All these are a few great factors which bring creativity and originality for magic performances.
Copying is a bad habit and most of us will fall in this category. I strongly believe that most of us have our own magic idol. When this kind of mind concept comes in, we will try to copy our idol as much as we can. Well, I can't pin point that copying is bad, but do not, I have emphasize that DO NOT copy totally. But you can get one liner or some moves that you like to mix into your routine.
Another words, Magic is just like music. People start to learn music from Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol and etc. These are the basic keys to create wonderful music. So does this principle apply in magic too. D.L, p***ing, b***ling, E*****y c***t, p**s, T***** p***h...All these consider as the basics of magic. With proper attention and putting all these together, you will get the routine of your own magic. This is what we call as the right performance of magic.

In my opinion, I'd rather the person do just this than the whole Ambitious Card Routine (ACR).
Personally I don't like the ACR. It's a routine where the magician shows the audience that he can bring the card to the top of the deck in different ways. But what's the point?
Magicians claim that they'll do it in "more impossible conditions".
Listen, to laymen, it's the same thing over and over again. You're just showing off to the layman. I think the ACR is a routine where a magician tries to satisfy his ego because he's able to fool the layman again and again.
The best thing is to just do a DL, replace, let the layman hold the card he just saw in his hand, dribble the deck, let him replace the card anywhere in the deck. Now he can swear he had put the card somewhere in middle of the deck and the deck squared up. Sounds impossible for the magician to locate the card right? (this question is geared to all lay people reading this post). Not exactly! It is possible, with just a snap of the magician's finger, it's back to the top. A miracle.
I like your points on originality and creativity. Good article. Vote.
