Title: Illegal?
Falcon121 - July 3, 2005 07:13 AM (GMT)
Hey, i juz wanted to find out, issit illegal to get spectators to sign coins and money and writing on money (notes and coins) yourself?
Sorry if i'm just being newbie...
;)
LarryDK - July 3, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
Technically yes, But once u signed a bill, u cant use the bill anymore. So it is not really ideal to sign a bill. Unless u want person to keep as sourvnier
Navarrone - July 3, 2005 01:28 PM (GMT)
does that make the magician a criminal?lolx....
adrielho11 - July 4, 2005 08:40 AM (GMT)
i think if you write it at the borders of the note..it isn't illegal..that is the case for u.s..not sure bout singapore though..permanent ink on coin usually can be erased off with a little alcohol...unless you carve your signature on the coin!!.. :P
LarryDK - July 4, 2005 12:04 PM (GMT)
It is illegal to alter the notes in any form.
So the any might include pen marks on it.
dok - July 6, 2005 11:59 AM (GMT)
Let's see...
Torn and restored, billswitch, signed bill into lemon...
I guess the saying is true, "we're all criminals after all". I don't know who says that, but if there is, it's true.
BlUeCoWz - July 21, 2005 09:15 AM (GMT)
hmmm.. unless i'm wrong, i think there's a product out there called the bill pen ? where the pen ink can be erased ??
is there such a thing ??? ;)
Magicdow - July 21, 2005 11:39 PM (GMT)
Anyone thought of using pencils instead on bills?
The Orientalist - July 22, 2005 03:55 AM (GMT)
Hi Magicdow,
You're brilliant! Look like your mind work very fast. Think of using pencil so that it can be erase. Smart move!
Kevin - July 22, 2005 04:38 AM (GMT)
Alternatively, you could ask them to write their name on a sticker, and then attach the sticker to the bill. When you're done, just peel the damn thing off! :D

that will be less convincing as the sticker can be easily removed and pasted onto another bill.
from what i gather, the best 2 methods are:
1. pencil/erasable pen ink
2. serial number

Technically it is illegal, but I seriously doubt you will be prosecuted for it. Imagine:
In Jail
Warden: What are you in for?
Axe Murderer: I hacked someone up.
Benjamin Koh: I had an unfunny blog.
Falcon121: I wrote on a dollar bill.
Taxpayers: .................
Markiebeth - November 3, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
If you're really interested can go find out if it's illegal at
http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/Also if my brains have not failed me (too long no study), there are provisions which provides for against acts which are deemed too minor to be considered for prosecution.
Should be safe though I cant guarantee anything ;)
Andy - November 3, 2005 03:40 AM (GMT)
Althou deemed illegal, I doubt your audience would call the authorities on you when asked to sign the bill.
sand king - November 3, 2005 03:50 AM (GMT)
best if you are thinking of having you spector sign on a note, dont take their note, use yours, use a small denomination say $2 note or if you have alot use the $1...
i dont think they would call the authorities, they dont lose their money lol
TayYH89 - November 3, 2005 05:38 AM (GMT)
Writing on a note or coin is considered vandalism.
But as long as you remove the writing, it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe, just keep it as a souvenir, either for the spec or you.
Just use pencil.
sand king - November 3, 2005 06:35 AM (GMT)
if you guys still got doubts... next outing go singapore mint, ask them...
yaz - March 14, 2006 01:34 PM (GMT)
I doubt anyone would call the cops. Have you seen Mondo Magic? They signed and initial a 10 dollar note on national TV. So really, I'd have some evidence to back me up if I do get caught :D.
zomaziz - March 15, 2006 01:30 AM (GMT)
lol.. yeah mondo magic bent some coins too.
but wait a minute.. is coin-bending illegal also? :P
we could sue them.. haha. jkjk.
yaz - March 15, 2006 06:11 AM (GMT)
So my guess is... it's ok. Or if you want to play safe you can wait to see if there is any outcome from the shows. If I were to be presented in front of a judge I would have some evidence to back me up though :D.
Incarneto - March 15, 2006 06:26 AM (GMT)
I guess it's still not right to sign?
<Aaron> - March 15, 2006 08:18 AM (GMT)
nope it's not right to sign on a bill with a PEN!!! (sharpies are included too..)
haha..so use a pencil..you can never go wrong..well until you erase so hard that you tear the note... :P
yaz - March 16, 2006 01:54 AM (GMT)
How about a whiteboard marker on those new plastic notes? Is it possible?
GordonLi - March 16, 2006 10:54 AM (GMT)
I think the serial number should be good enough.
zomaziz - March 16, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
i think the serial number has a slightly different effect.. lol
because the number is quite long, it can create that slow revelation idea..
eg: (as you read "9812457"..... the spectator would be slowly matching those numbers, to his surprise.. stuff like that)
whereas with a signature (its illegal, so don't), its like "woah! definitely my note" lol. just my opinion. ^_^
i don't even do note tricks. haha
xuanweng - March 16, 2006 03:23 PM (GMT)
use 2 dollar plastic notes. i THINK marker can be erased from it? anyone tried that before???
Lego - March 16, 2006 04:13 PM (GMT)
makes sense
Mods Note:
Please try to post more than just "I agree", "you rock", kind of replies. It would be better if you can further add to the discussion at hand.
yaz - March 16, 2006 04:48 PM (GMT)
I agree with Zomaziz. Audiences usually don't get shocked when reading serials. They need the stuff to be more personalized. Anyways I don't do money magic... just contributing my 2 cents.
zomaziz - March 17, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
lol... yaz, you misunderstood my post.. but nvm. yup, i totally agree. ^_^
either way it makes sense. hahaha~
yong_tianadeline - March 17, 2006 11:07 AM (GMT)
Hi.
I wonder if you know that it is actually possible to get two bills with the same serial number.
No joking. I've seen it before. And it is same type of bill... (meaning like two dollar plastic bill) but its not easy to get... :)
A.
*just wanna add that its very hard to get it though... you got to go through a lot of notes before you can find it.
sand king - March 17, 2006 01:45 PM (GMT)
possible if you print them LOL!
oh yeh... nothing's illegal...unless you are get caught ...

I don't like this kind of mindset.
This is why many people commit crimes in the first place. They don't think they'll get caught. (Like illegal downloading of music.)
And why wait till you get caught? Isn't that too late already?
zomaziz - March 18, 2006 07:00 AM (GMT)
wow.. finding the identical serial numbers sounds kinda like lottery. it can't be easy...
considering how hard it is for the machines at the singapore mint to misprint.. (plus the fact that you have to get both bills)
unless you rob a bank or something. but yup, that's illegal too. :P
and don't even think you won't get caught.
jonatha - March 19, 2006 07:36 PM (GMT)
hey in year 2000, they launch some kind of collector note. it comes in sets of 3 and all 3 have the same serrial numbers. i have 2 sets... maybe i can use it to come up with some tricks

If you want to print (that's illegal), might as well use monopoly notes.
I mean, the strength of money magic is that you are using real money. (correct me if i am wrong)
If you use printed money, which is illegal, the effect is diminished. Most people can tell between real and printed money.. So rather than use that, might as well use monopoly money.(that's legal) :P

Normaly for coin & Notes Tricks, I usually ask the spectator to note the serial no of the notes or the date of manufacture for the coin.Anyway there should be no problem in signature on coin cos it can easily wipe off.
