Title: Help For My Show
Description: ideas?

nyx - July 4, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
Hi guys..

I've an upcoming show in 2 months time, sorry peeps, it's a private army function, and i would like some ideas..

The organisers would like a 20-30min show and i'm wondering what i can perform for them. On our initial discussion, they requested some things.

1) Flashy effects, as in some pyro stuff.
2) Escapes or some sort (i can handle this, but like ideas~ ^_^ )
3) Reading the guest of honour mind!

Any ideas will be welcomed~ I'm running dry. Ideas like, the theme of the show, routines to use, etc.

One more thing, most likely i won't have any pyro props, so Ms Ning, get ready to take orders when i decided what to use. ;)

illusionist - July 4, 2005 10:30 AM (GMT)
You should like tell us of wat rountine you are going to do then roughly we know wat you know meh... if you tell you something you do not know you also can perform that effect.. :D

hihs - July 4, 2005 11:59 AM (GMT)
i think u MUST use a Flash paper if u want those flashy effects. appearing a coin?

nyx - July 4, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
oh erm... personally i'm a NOOB in pyro side. So any help there would be appreciated.

For my escapes, i'm versatile with ropes, handcuffs (though i need new ones), in box then morph out.... ...

For my mentalism effects, i have Banacheks', Osterlinds', and Mavens' DVDs to study.. Just want to know which effect you guys would use.

And with the above, maybe come out with a theme for me?? Like maybe a soldier got trapped in a fire fight, got caught, tries to escape and has to deceive the guard to let him??

THanks peeps.

if its a 20-30 min show, then just settle on one genre of magic.

choose between a stage show, comedy show, manipulation, mentalism, escape show, whatever.

dont do too many things. what do u want to present yourself as? what do u want the audience to feel?

settle on 1 first, then design your show based on what u want.

i understand that they requested many things, but u have the responsibility that the show is good, not just what they want. strike a balance, decide which of their request u will fufil, and build a show around that.

nyx - July 4, 2005 03:17 PM (GMT)
yea, they are just demanding too much.. Gonna have a meeting with the organisers again next monday..

You think i can drag a single escape act to 20-30 minutes long?? Or prolly a mentalism effect which can do the same?

Oh one condition is they want me to read the GOH's mind when the dinner is commenced, which means, it is a close-up standalone move. They don't want me to use cards. They are hoping for something like Blaine's thinking of someone very important to you and name it kinda effect.

You think you can catch one's attention for so long with a single effect? I wouldn't want to watch an escape act that last that long.

GordonLi - July 5, 2005 07:24 AM (GMT)
i suggest a mental act.

just a few good effects with lots of patter, buildup and everything will be definitely fill the time.

but make sure u choose good effects though...

nyx - July 5, 2005 12:29 PM (GMT)
hmm, mental act.. probably.. now i would have to find a theme for my routine... any suggestions will be much appreciated..

back to the drawing board~

GordonLi - July 5, 2005 01:26 PM (GMT)
well, since u have banachek, osterlind and maven's stuff, u should be well equipped. choose strong effects that uses various stuff (eg. book test, cards, objects, slate, whatever). im quite sure that they are ok with cards for use with mentalism, try getting jumbo cards (can do jumbo bwave too). cos mentalism is ideally reading the mind with any objects, and cards offer a lot of possibilities for mentalism.

frankly, im a noob at mentalism, but what i can say is just choose around 3-4 effects, max 5, and make sure u pay attention to build up and presentation. this is very important in a mentalism show. patter well. all the best with the show!

nyx - July 7, 2005 02:56 AM (GMT)
hmm, u know, i have powerful effects at my disposal.. thing is, i can't think of a theme, a story which can captivate the audience more..

GordonLi - July 7, 2005 09:05 AM (GMT)
a theme is not neccessary for a mental act, nor it is neccessary for a magic act. it sure helps, but not vital.

u can just make the entire thing a demonstration of the power of the mind.

sheeke - July 8, 2005 05:49 AM (GMT)
i suggest levitation using the heli card

The Orientalist - July 8, 2005 05:56 AM (GMT)
I think you should do an escape effect with sucker effect.

Spellbinder - July 8, 2005 01:15 PM (GMT)
Mail someone at the company telling them to expect a second letter from you which contains a prediction about the future which will be revealed during your performance. They should NOT open this second letter, but place it securely in a safe, and on the night of the show, Mr. Bigshot from the company should personally bring it to the show inside his coat. Mr. Bigshot should sign his name across the envelope seal to verify that it has not been opened by anyone before the show.

Then, before the show, just check to make sure Mr. Bigshot brought the envelope and you're set to do a prediction and load it into the envelope. There are several methods for doing this known to most mentalists, so I won't reveal it here... the routine above is all you need. If you need further clues, you'll find a similar use of an envelope switch in The Wizards' Journal #1- Old News.

Hope your show is a big success.

Well, if you have Osterlind's DVD then you can perform one of my favourite effects and thats Radar Deck. If you do it, take a longer time to reveal the cards they chose and put in more drama. You know what I mean. His watch routine is also really cool so I suggest you do that one as well. Invite some folks on stage and do it to them.

Oh and please please don't do heli card. In my opinion, it will spoil your show. Your audience will think that you're just a guy with gimmicks as IT has been exposed to the lay public already. Its a cliche man.

Peace.

weiming - July 11, 2005 05:17 AM (GMT)
i would suggest not to do overly visual stuff, it is dangerous and may not look magical.

mentalism is a great start!

sheeke - July 24, 2005 01:48 PM (GMT)
humming bird card

kryptonite - July 26, 2005 10:20 AM (GMT)
hmmm.well sheeke,in case ypu haven't noticed, blackwing had mentioned that it is advisable not to do stuff like hele card and anyhting that involves the use of IT.IT has already been widely exposed to the public so if you perform effects where you need to use IT,people would most probably laugh or throw rambutans at you.hehe.

Hi, u loved magic ever since u was in kindergarten, and u restore the passion since 8 month ago, 1stly, welcome u to the world of magic.

u are into metal bending, cards and escapism, u are must better than me.

i cannot do any of ur's, sad........

my little suggestiion for ur show;

1) Flashy effects, as in some pyro stuff.
You might like to do a metal bend(a key belong to the guest of honour car) :P

2) Escapes or some sort (i can handle this, but like ideas~ ^_^ )
And u get caught but with ur escapism, u free urself and restore the key of his car. B)

3) Reading the guest of honour mind!
Asking him to forgive u, do the card mind reading, if you able to mind read all the army officer mind.

Well,
doin some dangerous escape thingy might not be advisable unless u know the proper method of doing it or u haf a magician which has done escape magic before to guide u..

Just a suggestion, Floating a Fake Rose, then ***** n become a real rose.after that, use that real rose n change to silk using **********. Do disappearing tricks with silk and maybe u can end of by snow storm or throw streamers..

If possible, get some background music and let yr routine haf a story behind it..after all, the magical thing about magic is not the tricks u do but the story behind it..Thats how i tink!!haha!!

Anyway, all the best for yr show!

phew... i was away for a while and i do miss this forum! I was working in Marina for the national day carnival from the 6th to the 14th of august as i slog through the days. Anyway, i'm back. :off:

okok.. hmm..

M.A.D, thanks for the suggestions for that was what was going through on my mind in the initial stages as well.

Hanz716, the organisers want something really big.. so i figure i can't use floating rose, helecard (other reasons for not using too!), poker size card effects, small thumptip flame... blah blah blah.. and besides, i can't do dangerous escapes even if i want to. Where to get the money to buy those gigantic props? lol

The organisers want a story. And coincidentally, it somewhat resembles MAD suggestions. haha. But i turned it down. It's too cheesy. So in the end, i've been relegated to walkarounds for the GOHs.
