Title: Close Up Magic Without A Table
Description: Any help?
Blackwing - July 9, 2005 11:48 AM (GMT)
Hi folks. I do close up magic, but I realise that I do alot of table stuff. When it comes to events like the NKF thing that I'm doing, I realise that I have limited knowledge of pure stand up type of close up magic. You know, magic that doesn't use tables. Any advice on stuff that I should learn? Besides spongeballs, NFW, heli card and stuff like that.

There're plenty of material for non table work if you do coin magic. And if you need a space to put your cuts/coins/ props, you can always use the spec's hand as a table.
There're also some dice routines (Dr. Sach's, Reed McCllintok's Ivory connection, Bob Sheet's Its the Rules etc) that don't utilise a table. You can also do ring flite, gimmick coin stuff (e.g, Scotch and Soda, hopping halves, etc), TT stuffs as well.

I will recommend rope magic. Very visual and presentable. You don't need a table and you can perform it with people not just in front of you but all around you.
Also stuffs like coin & wand, TT, gimmick coin, just to name a few.

Improvising is the key Nick. Alot of stuff can be modified to suit strolling magic. Drop me an SMS or PM if you need my help

Aldo Columbini has a tape dedicated to this kind of magic, which has killer material. It's called
"Standing Room Only", check it out.
I personally loved it.

Right, thanks for the posts folks. Kevin I'm definitely gonna check the vid out. Yeah, I guess I need to widen my scope of magic. I'm too ' into ' cards.
Oh, more posts are welcome of course.

it shudnt take much time/effort to change a trick so it can be done without a table. use ur pocket (eg. card sticking out 1/2 way), spec's hand (involving them at the same time), changing the routine, etc.
in the first place, it is not very good to use routines without improving them to suit ur style/venue/audience/watever.

You are refering to card tricks are you? Because some tricks simply cannot be done without a table.

Blaine does many card tricks standing up...
so if you don't know any, perhaps that would be a good place to start.
Simple yet powerful :)

you can try messing around with their minds, if u know what i mean.. -_-
Blackwing - July 12, 2005 07:43 AM (GMT)
yeah I know all of blaine's stuff. In my opinion, its too simple. I want killer stuff. Super killer effects without a table. I've got several good effects but I need more.

too simple? Hmmm, nah, its the simple stuff that kills, i mean, honestly, its hit and run and you will get really good reactions for it.
Killer effects? Or just advance sleight of hand?

hmm card effects are all right. Ok lemme change the topic abit.
what are the best stand up effects? Regardless of whether its cards, spongeball, coin etc.
Magicdow - July 12, 2005 08:23 AM (GMT)
The best stand up effects are the ones that you can do comfortably. I think everyone has their own view. Their "best" might not be your "best".
I don't really like card effects. If a layman would ask me to do an effect, I will actualy do some card effects.
Talk to Sherman, he can give you good advice as he likes non table work.

how about you learn to make a table appear from nowhere.that will be a wonderful opener.then you can make things to decorate the table eg.table lamp or vase appear from nowhere too.and then table magic would be a piece of cake.
serioudly talkin, you should then do impromptu stuff such as 2 card monte and stuff like that.

Well.. Improvise is the key.. I'm still a noob but well.. Haha.. Here's what I feel.. Spectator hands.. Pockets.. Actually, you can use the floor too! It's always available! Haha! Just end down or squat down and get everyone to look down...

identify what effects you wish to add to your repertoire first. afterwhich, look for or adapt an existing method to suit walkaround conditions. better still, perhaps develop your own methods to accomplish the intended effect. it's a good exercise.
there isn't a formula in deciding "killer" material. as magicdow has said, find what works for you. choose the effects you wish to perform, then make them work without a table. and after time it will develop and get better as you go along.

u can probably change your moves to always suit for in the hands as compared to having a table. treat having a table as a bonus. doing a in the hands perfect triumph would be nice. cards to pocket repeatedly or some coin tricks. u just have to modify and adapt to surroundings. u can also borrow spectators hands and that kind of magic is stronger at times

Actually there're tonnes of magic out there that can be done standing up, Ambitious card, 2 Card Monte, Gypsy Monte, Raven, Biting Coin just to name a few..
Personally i tink some of the best Stand up effects would the Mental ones..
