Title: Need Recommendations

stealth0128 - July 24, 2005 03:24 PM (GMT)
i need some recommendations on books or dvds on stuffs like card manipulation and tricks. preferably intermediate level.

went to kinokuniya and borders, the books are more suitable for people who's totally new to card magic.

as for those magic shops, i've no idea which are the good ones so i need some help from the pros here.

thanks in advance!

What are you into exactly?

For cards,

theres passes, steals, flourishes, controls, deals, stacks, etc.

If you can name exactly what you want, maybe we all can help you. Alternately, visit magic websites, they have lots of videos that shows you what tricks they offer on the DVD. Once you seen the preview, you can head down to the shops to grab those you like.

If you do not know which magic sites to search for, do a search on google or look around the forum.

Hm... if you count yourself as an intermediate level, then you should roughly know what to get for yourself.

And yeah!!! From your intro, you mentioned that you started 2 months ago. Its either you're into magic just to know the secrets or you want to know more magic to impress people.

Go to the bookshop which has those books you mentioned, get them and learn your basic well. Make sure you spend loads of time practising. Especially DL. (if you know what I meant)

There are many magic books at kinokuniya. You should know which one suits you. You can also try searching the Internet but those tricks are probably beginner stuffs. For card manipulation I would recommend Mcbride's Art of card manipulation.

I second Jeff McBride's card manipulation DVDs.

Woundnt recommend Jeff Sheridan's DVDs eventhough he taught McBride. simply because his explanations will bore you to sleep if you are quite new to card manipulation.

I wouldnt recommend picking up card manipulation from books as well. Too complex.

Try asking the dealers in this forum. Mcbride's card manipulation comes in 3 volumes. You might like to get all of them.

You shud take a look at penguin magic..they will show you the intro of the materials in the particular DVD for most of them..maybe you can see something you like...

I heard that stealing pips is good although i did not get it..i think it shud be around intermediate level..

You should try out chicago bar magic and David Regal's series. Those are pretty good. Yeah, you might want to try Bill Malone's videos as well. And, if you want some wicked close up stuff, try out the kryptic konjuror.

just go to the libabry and borrow some books

stealth0128 - July 29, 2005 10:17 AM (GMT)
wow thats hell lotsa help, really really appreciate that. thousand thanks guy~

by the way which library has the most variaties?

Magicdow - July 29, 2005 11:13 AM (GMT)
I don't think library offers any books on card manupulations. You can find some good stuff on effects though. You have to dig for the books. You can go to their website and do a search for the books and see which library has them. If its on loan, you can always reserve them for a fee of $1.55.

Do a bit of homework and it'll save you some money.

Daryl Encyclopedia of Card Sleights will keep you busy for a long long time.

Hmm. I recommend micheal ammar's easy to master card miricles or bill malone's on the loose or card sleights by daryl. if you are rich, you can get ninja one by ellusionist. for books you can go for the five volumes of card college. Try contacting cynwell or ning in this rorum. they have really a good deal. :g: hope that helps.

Ben - July 30, 2005 02:47 PM (GMT)
Daryl Encyclopedia of Card Sleights is good. But there are 8 volumes. Will cost you a bomb.

stealth0128 - July 30, 2005 04:18 PM (GMT)
thanks for all the fast and helpful advices. seems like i got some serious decision to make. :(
