Title: They Thought It Was Voodoo..
yong_tianadeline - August 6, 2005 05:46 AM (GMT)
Some of my friends actually thought that magicians pray to some weird gods and stuff like that :o
they believe its black magic put to smaller use. (my god!) I thought this thinking only existed in older days...
How to change their warped perception of magicians? Or should i try at all?

Why should you try to change their view on magicians? I mean, if they think that you have the power to do anything, thats great. Regardless of whether you pray to Satan or not.
Markiebeth - August 6, 2005 07:03 AM (GMT)
Oh well, some people just tend to stick in this weird mindset that anything that seems impossible must be associated with black magic.
Then next time perhaps u can just strike a match in front of em and tell em u got the power to command the natural force of fire out. heehee.

But I think she feels uncomfortable that people associate magic with evil.

Oh ok I get what you mean. Well I guess some people are not comfortable with the way they present their magic. As for me, if my friends think that my magic is linked to satanism, I would wear the star of David just to make my magic even more impactful ( I mean it, I ain't joking).
But, like I said, not everyone thinks like me so I guess you should try explaining to your friends that your magic is not linked to the dark arts at all. Do simpler magic and try to make your presentations less scary. For example, you could try doing sponge ball magic and tell them about the story of how you made a kid's candy multiply. Yeah that can't be linked to the dark arts in any way.

i don't think so. i think you should feed on the impression and if you feel uncomfortable with it, change evil into mystery when you perform.
Add more 'questioning' kind of patter into your routine . For example, when you're doing the 2 card monte, i use the patter that ppl call me a cardist and that actually magic is made up of techniques. And at the last part jsut before they reveal a card, i say i lied, i am a magician, turn your card over and you'll understand.
besides, it really depends on what kind of performer you want to be, and each 'field' has its scholars. Jay Sankey's and greg wilson have been known for their comedian magic acts, while david blaine and criss angel (ahem to both) excelled in the field of 'dark magic'
Whatever it is, never cease to amaze.

Haha, well, I prefer the opposition of it.
Really interested in bizarre magic. ^_^

Don't be surprised. Some magician also think that black magic is involved in David Blaine's effect. If you follow certain threads, you'll know what I mean.

How i wish all spectators were like that. :g:

well, surely it must be obvious that there cant be so many ppl who can do black magic. when magic was more exclusive in the past, u might pull this off.
then again, while ur magic may be themed to be occult, it is unethical to actually claim as a fact that it is.
LarryDK - August 9, 2005 03:56 PM (GMT)
Haha, Ya, if the audience think that way, its easier to freak them out.
But technically, whether black magic exist or dun exist is a question. So technicially dun question the audience that it is not voodoo. I have spec walking around me asking me got little boys with me anot. But i juz let them be. The most is they get their bible out and say their chants. Just joking.
Let them be. But dun make a fuse out of it. Dun further give them the impression that u know black magic by talking to them abt it. Keeping slience abt it is best loh. Tats wat i think.
ziLin - August 9, 2005 07:19 PM (GMT)
 to me, i think you should try to explain to them that it's not voodoo or black magic and you do not pray to some weird god.. true enough, it may be unnecessary explanation...
but what i think is that yes, you shouldn't try to convince them that it's voodoo, but if they think that it's voodoo, it's definitely unhealthy for them to continue thinking so. i mean, i wouldn't want my friends thinking that i pray to some weird god and avoid me forever! it'll even be sensitive for some of your friends..
afterall, isn't magic a form of entertainment? to me, it kind of kills the entertainment when people start thinking that you're satanic and you dabble in the black arts.. that just turns people off, i think. unless the person is weird. haha.
but not everyone is easy to talk to, so i guess a gentle explanation would be the best you can go.. if they refuse to accept it, just comfort yourself with knowing that you're such a good magician that others think you're invincible! ;)

"No I don't have black magic. If you don't believe me you can go ask my old pal Lucifer."
"Ya, wadaya want." (Says Lucifer)

hahahahaha star of david ???
check this out..
The Star of David (Magen David in Hebrew or Mogen Dovid in Ashkenazi Hebrew, Shield of David, Solomon's Seal, or Seal of Solomon) is a generally recognized symbol of Judaism and Jewish identity. It is also known colloquially as the Jewish Star. With the establishment of the State of Israel the Jewish Star on the flag of Israel has also become a symbol of Israel.
Whereas, The Pentagram, is a 5 sided star in a circle that is associated to satanism..
so pls decide.. either u want to be a jew, or satanic .. lolx.. FYI

I'm holding back my laughter tryng to imagine a satanic bar mitzvah...
on a serious note, personally , I'm againsts magicians who claim their powers are real, occult etc etc. Houdini was a major crusader againsts these people...James Randi is doing the same now..
However, i think its cool to let the people speculate, this way your reputation grows. But I agree with LarryDK, if ever someone approaches me and ask me if I dabble in spirits (other than Jack Daniels :) ), I'd say no. I use smoke and mirrors :P
R_jayz - August 12, 2005 01:59 PM (GMT)
i've encountered several cases where the spec really thought i was meddling with satan or sumthim... this malay auntie kept on advising me to stay away from such things... tried to explain... but gave up.
I think if people want to think this way, let them be, juz stop showing magic to them anymore... you can't expect them to change their way of thinking unless you show em how it's done...
BlUeCoWz - August 12, 2005 06:05 PM (GMT)
hahha i think i've said this b4, but here goes,
I'm a christian but have been and still accused by people 4 using balck magic so yea.. wat de.. so my theory is...
western people i feel are more susceptible to thing it was an 'illusion' or blame sumthing that is physical..
Whereas u do any magic now, ESP " GHOST FESTIVAL" they will say you got some of the spirits to do it la..
lolx..
yea..
Hanz716 - August 14, 2005 10:01 AM (GMT)
U see, u are called a magician when u set audiences in mystery...however, if they tink that we use black magic we gotta tell them the truth..u can just say i am not associated with any black magic or wadever..
cHeERs!
:D
iamthewalrus - August 14, 2005 04:53 PM (GMT)
If you want, do like many magicians who say disclaimers like "whatever I do does not come from any special ability, religious or otherwise, but if you think so, you and your wallet are always welcome at my place."
:D
But if people are geniunely wowed, then it's a good show. Well done!
lllusion112 - January 13, 2006 10:45 AM (GMT)
Haha, maybe you can tell them that what you are doing is using part of voodoo, as voodoo or black magick is basically a use of psychological believe of the "believer?" and therefore the effect looked very impossible.Just like when you are doing cold reading if you know how to do it.
Voodoo is mostly based on psychology actually, and the way spectators think about black magic(voodoo) is that they did not understand it fully. therefore you can try and experiment of the so called "voodoo" by doing a basic colour change and tell them that the card they saw just now was just and illusion which you had cued in some words which influenced them to see things differently, just like hypnotism. (Make it up!!!!)
Vic - January 13, 2006 04:23 PM (GMT)
Just say you are a magician and go ahead to explain that these you are doing are magic TRICKS not satanic/evil/black magic or something. If they still think so, just tell them that their thinking is totally wierd. Walk off after that.
sand king - January 14, 2006 12:45 AM (GMT)
most of the time, the pepole that say that you are satanic/demonic are your close friends....
the thing i do to shut them up it.... ''Yeh right, if i am satanic, then what are you?''
usally works :)
Vic - January 14, 2006 02:00 PM (GMT)
Don't think you should use that method.. People will get really pissed off, thinking that you are trying to insult them in some way... And it sounds real aggressive....Yeah. Just say that magic tricks are not related to any satanic stuff. They are just tricks. Not black magic. Yeah. Then tell them a joke or something to get their mind off the topic of 'satanism'.
When your close friends say you are satanic. They are just joking about that. What they really are trying to say is that they don't know how the hell you did that. Utterly amazed or something. Yeah. And probably the old folks or very religious people will really mean it when they say 'satanic'. Its their thinking. You can't change that. It's sorta old-fashioned or overly-religious thinking... Just know that and you'll be fine.
:D
