lol.... long time since i posted alrdy...
can u guys share your first time or any experiences when it comes to performing on the street?

Markiebeth - August 12, 2005 11:58 AM (GMT)
First experince? Terrible, horrific, everything bad.

ACR that went half gone due to extremely shaking hands. Especially so when you have a huge crowd and about 15pairs of eyes staring at every little move you make with your hands/cards -_-'

lukold - August 12, 2005 12:41 PM (GMT)
was pespiring like hell after it. lil shaky hands but i got the entire routine through.
very very anxious .. bahz.

dtjk - August 12, 2005 01:11 PM (GMT)
Last time when I perform, I used to tremble like crazy, so much that I'm like.. embarassed to continue perform, in fear of the audience thinking, "Wth is wrong with this guy? Does he has a illness or what?"

Lol, however, I soon then realised that almost every magicians have this problem throughout their magic journey. The only way to overcome it, in my opinion is to get rid of the crowd fear, and the thought of fearing of exposure, even when you know you DEFINITELY WILL NOT "phew" or expose when doing this or that particular sleight.

Just perform as much as you can, or as much as you want. Allow the spectator to shuffle the deck; even when there's not a need to, so you can relax you hands and wipe the sweat off.

My first experience wasnt quite a bad one actually. I was on my usual train ride home, duration of 45 mins and I was like leaning against the door and doing coin roll. I caught sight of a couple of younsters on the other side, looking at me. Then, i did a couple of simple coin vanishes (for self pleasure) and from the reflection of the glass door I could see their reactions. Haha. Then, I smiled at them, and after a while, I decided to walk over. I couldnt really do alot with coins, so I took out my cards and after that, thinking of showing them what trick was a breeze as I'm pretty much into cards. As usual, I knew I was trembling, but the bumpy ride of the train doesnt make a difference, as everyone was shaking, lol. To my surprise, I managed to entertain them from Clarke Quay all the way to Kovan Station, with just a couple of coins and a pack of cards. And thinking back, I think I mainly did ACR and like some simple colour changes, as there's simply so many variations to link these two subjects together as a huge huge routine.

But now, I dont really tremble as much, unless its a really huge crowd or a bunch of seriously bad hecklers. But then, if thats the case, I think I wouldnt really wanna perform afterall.

Haha. Good luck with your trembling, its will take quite sometime to get over it, just keep performing! :P

R_jayz - August 12, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
i haven't really performed to public b4... but the first time i performed to this stranger i was trembling like mad(somemore i in this air-con room).... the girl kept laughing... i dunno why, most probably at my trembling hands..

bcoz - August 12, 2005 03:11 PM (GMT)
yaa.. i agree its really scary to perform street magic. You need alot of balls to do that ^_^ .Show more magic to the public.ME juz perform around my neighbourhood to overcome that 'FEAR'.At first my hands will tremble and etc lar... i bet you that u will wana to do sm again n again after u finished ur first sm.Very COOL man....
But one thing i dislike is when ppl thought that im using black magic when im performing tha trick.DEY are kinda STU**D actualy. <_<

Juz fake the confidence...juz do it!

[Ling] - August 12, 2005 03:32 PM (GMT)
For me, i believe everything has a first step. You never try, you never know. i can still remember the first few times that I picked up my guts to perform to strangers, which is in school. Yes, trembling is all natural, you might mumble to yourself. It's normal.

Just do more, and you will find all these signs fading away. Soon, it became so rountined, everything comes to you with ease.

My so-called motto: Heck care and do it.

My first experience is horrible....lol sort of like getting a stage fright and then knees start to buckle...then after a while then get use to it

trickster - August 14, 2005 10:41 AM (GMT)
o ok... yea i think i gotta need a lot of balls..
interesting though...
btw, nice motto : Heck care and do it.

junior - August 29, 2005 06:32 AM (GMT)
1st time?... well, it was still quite a good exp if minus those skakes. ha

thaddeus - September 6, 2005 06:41 AM (GMT)
Oh.. The first time i perform , i was very , extremly scared.. I was trebling , but trying to hide it... legs were shaking too... almost screw up the trick , 2 card monte... my worst part is that i almost missed the secand card in do***e Lift... But manage to succed.. Although reaction was not very good , but i manage to pass... I did not exposed though... But after the first one.. the next few was darm easy..

Blackwing - September 6, 2005 10:19 AM (GMT)
Hmmm I can't even remember my first performance. Too long ago. Anyway here's something to add on. I tremble in front of other magicians but I don't tremble in front of strangers. I don't know why. Those of you who have seen me doing charity stuff can support this fact.

chewguanxun - September 6, 2005 10:24 AM (GMT)
haha i remember the first time... lol it was at toa payoh interchange, where the 157,163,and 231s are.. so there was a glass panel there. i knocked on the glass panel lah, trying to get the attention of a toddler.. but he ran away lol!(what am i a monster) but anyway his mum noticed and i showed a card vanish. then reappeared the card. lol then she looked stunned for a second, laughed and ran after her baby haha! :P

Blackwing - September 6, 2005 10:26 AM (GMT)
Oh anyway I think you guys misunderstood the term 'street magic'. Blaine-style street magic is actually called walk-around magic. The actual 'street magic' is gazzo-style magic. Does that make sense?

chewguanxun - September 6, 2005 10:31 AM (GMT)
what do you mean by "gazzo"..? like, gimme an example or sth.

fume - September 6, 2005 11:34 AM (GMT)
correct me if i'm wrong. i once read an artical he they says the "street magic" thing DB do is actually called "walk-around magic" . "street magic" is actually refer to u set up a table or stuffs on e street, and ppl crowd arnd u n watch u..kinda like busking n ppl give money? correct me if i'm wrong :)

anyway here's my experiance.. my very very first one was last december.. when i was realli realli bored as i juz reach my hse there e intercahnge, bukit batok, around 12 plus. and heck, can u beleive anyone doin magic for u at midnight?lol. but i did that.. i first spproach a uncle whom i realise after that he'd sit at a chair every night for dunno wat reason.. and i did e ACR and he was like very shocked.. and i walked all e way back to e interchange again n spotted a lady, and i showed her bill switch, and after that her husband came and i continues e ACR and 2-cm.

And onli after that did i realise they were actually frm RC and they asked "can u do stage show for RC?" and i was like "NO!!!" . becoz i juz started that time n i dun even own a vid or anything.. i juz figure out stuffs myself (serious. things like DL,marblo tilt, bla bla bla..).

But strangly i did not tremble that night, maybe coz it was dark n i was not really concerned abt e little tiny flashes. but it was after that when i attemp to show my church friends e following weeks i do still tremble.. but now no more.. well, i suppose if one day i'm performing for magicians i'll still tremble.. stress.

well.. a good example was last week, where there's a visitor to MC and solomon kinda showed some stuffs and i happened to walk in to buy some deck, then that uncle said "young man, what can u do with these cards? show me?" and i was... thinking "heck, didn't u see solomon is here?" and i look at solomon and he's like "go ahead, why not" . ARGH. e prob is i have prob performing in front of magicians! so i showed a sloopy triumnph and he left after that.. leaving me embarressed and spoilt e whole day. lol!

Blackwing - September 6, 2005 01:19 PM (GMT)
Yeah Fume you're right. Anyways, Gazzo style magic would be buskind-magic. Thats gazzo sytle and thats the real 'street magic'.

Challenge - September 6, 2005 06:04 PM (GMT)
First time? I was scared shitless. So was my audience, lol

It's challenging, most Singaporeans are pretty intimidated by strangers approaching them, esp if they're walking it's hard to stop them. If you stand in front of them and say hi, they'll pretend they didn't see you and walk one big round around you  If you ask "can I show you something real quick" most people say no and keep walking. They probably think I'm a salesman or something.

Out of desperation I figured out a couple "sneaky" ways to stop people pretty consistently. I first ask for directions. Then hand them something to hold (so they can't walk away yet, heh heh) and then go into a quick effect to hook them. "Hey do you know where is X? Thanks, hey real quick, help me hold this for a sec? Cool, check this out..."

Even better was when I had girls (the more sweet-looking the better, if she has cute little braces she's the BEST) to help stop people, for some reason more people will stop for a girl than a guy.

And yes I fumbled a lot cos my hands were shaking, in recap I would keep dropping the pen cap, but I would pretend it was supposed to happen as "misdirection" :P

And yeah, I feel weird performing for magicians too - it's kind of a feeling like they already know what you're gonna do before you begin.

Aloy - September 7, 2005 07:43 AM (GMT)
Let me get this straight....

You guys actually go onto the street, and do random acts of magic for strangers for no reason?

Wow.

You guys should really REALLY come do charity gigs.
You have a reason to perform, and it's for a good cause.

fume - September 7, 2005 08:28 AM (GMT)
frankly speaking.. i do that becoz i was greatly influence by a guy call david blaine at that time. haha.. and also wanna get more experience i can't get frm friends n families

You mean to say that's NOT how it's done? What the hell do I know. I saw David Blaine, Brad Christian, etc... so monkey see, monkey do.

Well actually there IS a reason - I just feel like performing. Sounds like a good cause to me. But Aloy, next time tell me before I bust my buns, ok? ;)

Btw, any charity gigs coming up? Did one a long time ago, but there don't seem to be many.

trickster - September 8, 2005 07:31 AM (GMT)
lol:D
my very first experience...
i tried performing to my school-mates during teachers day and i didnt really know them. wa... scary feeling... hands were trembling... u know.. that kind of feeling that when u perform and u r afraid u accidentally exposed something.
luckily they were impressed... at first i showed 1 to 1. then later both of us walking to skool and that guy i performed to went and tell another fren of his.. i showed the other fren and he was freaked out... lol.. i asked him whether he watch blanie doing acr and he said yes. then i said i would perform live for him... he freaked out.. haha..
had fun....

cardfreak - September 8, 2005 10:31 AM (GMT)
Omg...u guys have big balls...haha...I still dun dare go out the street and perform!!!!Lolz..Guess i am still noob to perform in the street.Btw the ACR u show to ppl izzit the one frm crash course 2???

R_jayz - September 8, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
I only perform to the public once only, at the last charity thing.. other than that i perform to people in my school, no need to know oso can..

performing on the streets randomly have crossed my mind like a million times, but in the end still cannot overcome my psychological barrier...sad..

chewguanxun - September 8, 2005 01:00 PM (GMT)
err, can sum1 help me, i can't connect ACR with anything i noe... :( but don't mean to be exposing or trying to get something out of it. or can i noe the effect? that'll be lots of help...

ACR = Ambitious Card Routine. A trick where the spec selected card repeatedly appear at the top of the deck.

justinho - September 8, 2005 11:27 PM (GMT)
Here's my view on the topic:

Street magic is performng on the streets for strangers (David Blaine, etc...)

Performing Gazzo-style, is Busking.

Walk-around magic is when you perform while walking around a ballroom or function room or anything like that. I guess it's similar to street magic, only not done on the streets.

I have done Street Magic only once, my friends dared me to. Was in town, had my S******i deck and an odinary deck with my. Long story short, i never really did it, hahaha... i chickened out a few times, then i approached a caucasian couple, told them what i wanted to do, the guy seemed interested, but the girl pulled him away, maybe she thinks i want money from them...
Anyways... i will do it again, coz i feel that that's a good way of overcoming the fear of performing to strangers... i think...

BTW, Gazzo is my father... hahahahha...

Cheers...

thaddeus - September 12, 2005 08:54 AM (GMT)
I usually link ACR with 2 card monte , some card mentalism , etc.. It links well! Btw , try ACR with your frens first.. get a hook on it... then try it on street... of you will expose the DL...

chewguanxun - September 12, 2005 09:13 AM (GMT)
hey man, i like my DLs :P lol yeah i noe whats acr now, thanks R jayz. i heard there's extremely many variations of ACR..

Big balls? No no no, you got me wrong. I perform to people cos I'm normally interested in the girls. Yeah anyways, I just performed on the street a few days ago and I managed to film it. I'll post it up soon.

Oh talking about ACR, there are a trillion and one types. Its all about how you implement your style into your magic. In my case, I stick to doing pa**** when I do ACRs. Card pops up, several times, card goes to the mouth, and card changes the colour of its back in the specs hands. Its extremely effective.

Oh and folks, there are alot more street routines other then David Blaine stuff. I avoid doing Ultimate Transpo and 2 card monte simply because everyone has seen david blaine do it. I do other stuff like my variation of NFW ( which happens in the specs hands ) and I do the ' Corner Torn Switch ' which is like ultimate transpo but it has a corner torn off.

There, stop reading this. Get out, and start performing.

I always wanted to know...which is easier? Are you supposed to feel more at ease with your friends or more pressurised to give a good performance?

Ben - September 12, 2005 12:01 PM (GMT)
There are many kinds of ACR man. I like Daryl Martinez's version.
