Title: Planning To Do A Performance Soon... Advise Needed

Pseudo - October 20, 2004 01:48 AM (GMT)
Alright... I have little performance experiance, I've perform a trick to 1 person and she got suprised. She asked me how to do it and want learn it to show her friend. My card was grabs to be checked to see if its gimmick. That's was a sucessful trick so far.

Okay... after practising for sometime, I planning to go ahead to perform some magic to my friend.

The problem now is I'm afraid. Afraid of screwing my trick and accidentally give away the secret. I know I got to break this bearer by performing it.

Somehow, I told meself to just go ahead but when it comes to the real situation, I chickened out.

I don't know why but I always have the feeling that people did see my DL or sleight when I'm doing it. Its just me. They probaly didn't see it.

Anyway, I've decided to just go ahead to perform. I can't wait anymore. I don't care if I've failed or not. We learn from experiance and when we fail, we get better next time.

Do you think I should just go ahead? Any tips or guidiance?

Dude ~ Have confidence in yourself, if you can do those kind of reactions and grabbing of the cards by the spectator him/herself. It must have been a very good performance for a 1 effect.

Leaking out the secret could be tempting, but try not to leak it unless your life is endangered which you won't have a chance to experience it. You will be safe dude~

And lastly of all, YES i think you should.

What kind of performance is it ? Street ? Table Hopping ? Palour (sorry for spelling mistake) ? Walk around ?

Perform stuff to my campmates. Planning to do the 2 card monte and Here then there trick.

I'm not planning to do a 5mins trick. Probaly do a trick or 2 and that's it. I have limited tricks... Probaly coin vanish...

Basically, I did a 2 card monte to one of my friend and he actually compared me with blaine. He asked me to show him again but I refused as I know he will be more alert.

Here is what I plan to do.

1) Coin Vanish
2) Here Then There
3) 2 Card Monte

Which is better? Perform 2 Card Monte first or Here Then There. Personally, I feel that performing "2 Card Monte" after "Here Then There" is better.

Any sugesstions on tricks?

Well, i wouldn't say "dun care if you fail or not".......
do care if you have given it enough practise and have you worked on it enough.

But dun get stuck in your bedroom infront of ur mirror as well. If you feel that you have practised it enough and have got the sleights down in place, try the trick on someone you can trust or maybe a fellow magician (that's what this place is for ;)) and get some feedback or comments. If that turns out well, then go wild with it.

Or maybe i'm a bit too careful....hurhur.... B)

do a here and there trick its easy and you get not bad reactions from lay people

Pseudo - October 20, 2004 02:13 AM (GMT)
I think I can do it well enough. Infact, the other time I thought my pass was invislble till I did it infront of my friend and he didn't catch me. Later on, I got more guts to do it infront of other people. And people taught I did a double lift.

Here is how I plan to perform,

As my friends know that I'm into magic, they are going to know that I'm performing magic on them if I take out my cards.

I plan to approach them and ask them to help me cos I want to do and experiment and also sort of teach them. Of course I'm not really teaching them.

Or are there any ideas?

Winder - October 20, 2004 02:18 AM (GMT)
Well, i have 1 which even got some magicians thinking. But the principle is pretty simple, just like daryl got me thinking for 3 whole days -_-.

Anyway just go ahead and perform it, it would be nice if you could do some prediction stuff and etc. Mind reading is good too, Not necessary to be card, you can use coins/rubber band and etc.

I have very limited tricks now. Must wait till my stuff arrived before I can show them other tricks.

Any tricks which you guys can intro. Good visual trick.

Use sleight of hand technique like color changes and etc. LOL.

here's a suggestion:

if you've never performed for people, then you should get one or two friends who you're always going to perfom to. what i mean by this is:

get a buddy, or bunk mate, or girlfriend, and show them your tricks. repeat the effects as much as you want to, and then get comments out of them. you see, even though you might expose the method to that friend, what you get in return is a lay man's view of the effect. dont think of it as trying to fool the person, just 'testing the effect' to see if you can do it.

every time you want to try a new trick, just show it to the SAME person. even though they'll be alert (cos they know you're up to something), you can still fool them if you're more alert yourself. think of this friend as a reviewer - a laymen who gets to see tricks firsthand. they'll be able to comment on the magic from a non-magician's perspective, and that will be very useful for you.

when you come up with something that fools your 'reviewer', then you know you've gone a step up.

I wouldn't do 2 card monte as there's a risk in getting caught with the change/switch.

I would do Ambitious Card Routine, as it look more amazing as the card keep jumping up and up. You could make the card jump here and there too, just let your imagination run wild.

Yo bro, as I say have confident in yourself only magician know wat is DL when they see one layman don't... Be natural and relax.. When you perfrom to people you hand tand to shake a bit but just relax and tell yourself you have practice this lots of time in the mirror and you know you can do a DL a Pass nicely.. Its time to go out and test your hardwork of training.. Tips on perfrom to your friend or spec.. be natural.. joke around a bit make them relax and not burning you to find out how the tricks is done.. vary your trick don't do cards trick all the way..and also think of wat you going to say and do if a trick when wrong.. Hope this help you abit.. Ah one more thing be creative can come up with you own presenting style.. :)

I think u need to work on ur misdirection, use gestures, prolonged stares etc to guide ur audience's attention to wherever but ur sleight if u're not too confident.

I'm planning to do the trace unseen trick. I'll show the specs the cards one by one and mysteriously its disappear. And for no reason it goes through the bedsheet.

How about that?

zinally - October 20, 2004 05:34 AM (GMT)
Just a word of advise.. Always do trick when people are not prepare to it. Just do it! Anytime, any place. Do not do tricks when people are focusing on your tricks.

Pseudo - October 20, 2004 06:32 AM (GMT)
Probaly I'll just take out my cards. Play around with it then asked if wants to see something.

Ya! I agree its best to avoid saying that you want to show them a trick.

If people are going to ask you to show them tricks, then I guess they are going to enjoy you trick. They won't be tough cookie I guess.

Tough cookies are the one who think they know everything about magic. They won't appreciate magic if you perform for them.

I've made a mistake once by challenging my friend that I can do a trick that blaine does. He doesn't believe me.

There was once I just do a 2 Card Monte trick on him. I believe he was shocked but didn't express out. He told me to do again but I refused. He then compared me with Blaine.
