Blackwing - September 19, 2005 11:38 AM (GMT)
if I'm not wrong, the 45 degree bend body thing is actually Michael Jackson's move. He used to include it in his dances.
Hey this video is pretty good. Last part looks edited though.

I showed this video to Wei Ping and the other demostrators in Street Magic. Heres the information I received from them, no harm sharing it here, I thought. :P
The one Michael Jackson did was a prop on the stage. As in, use ur common sense, there're probably hindges or maybe metal "rings" to hold Jackson's legs in place whilst he do the move. That wouldnt cost much, but that means it isnt Street Magic anymore.
The one that the Japanese Magician did was Street-wise, in other words.. The magic is at the shoes.. Haha. According to Daniel, you send a pair of shoes to a dunno what US company, 2 weeks later, they send back, and you pay USD$400, and you're set to freak people. Haha.
Then hor, Nick, the head drop off one is not edit one lah.. Haha. When Wei Ping saw this video, both him and Daniel had an idea, and they did research on it. Upon my 2nd return to Street Magic, they told me that they can actually make the gimmick for the effect, and it'll cost less than SGD$150. Haha. They're still working on it thou.
The only thing that REALLY stuns me in this video is the part where the magician knocks on the bottle for like 3 times, and it became a piece of paper. Its at 2mins 30 sec of the video.
Enjoy the video!
exohordon - September 19, 2005 01:00 PM (GMT)
The effect is called The Lean by Mike Malloy. It costs $650USD
I believed Michael Jackson used it as well. Correct me if I am wrong.
The magician on the video is Cyril. He's a member of T.H.E.M
and has many shows in Japan under his belt. Lots of his effects are original and well guarded.
I heard a couple of his effects got stolen. In case you don't know, he's the same person who did the hamburger effect. Hope we get to see more of him. His effects are fun and magicial to watch.
exohordon - September 19, 2005 01:07 PM (GMT)
The Head off Body Trick is a marketed effect.
There was another vid of Cyril snapping a pair of wooden chopsticks using only his shadows. That was a nice vid too. Anyone else saw that?
If Street Magic was to sell The Lean for $150, won't that be ripping off the creator?
trickster - September 19, 2005 01:28 PM (GMT)
woah lol... maybe i had no common sense.. haha.. i acutally thought the leaning part was a skill or same sort of illision...
okok interesting... got more of cryil videos.. just post it here... :D
nicky - September 19, 2005 03:26 PM (GMT)
lolx.. cool guy man.. de bottle effect is de most puzzling one.. >.<
n de vid wasn't edited or cut at tt pt.. it was only fast fowarded abit.. or was it due to lag? haha
Moderator's note: What kind of English are they teaching in schools nowadays?
shooyu - September 19, 2005 03:30 PM (GMT)

WOW. You are actually the source for one of Magic Castle's pirated products! Good for you!
I'm sure that when they're finally finished 'working on it', they'll just sell it off for $25. Right?

i believe he didnt do it on purpose.
maybe the shops might even come up with a diff way to do it? who knows.

I believe the part about Castle's issue on piracy has been discussed and discussed ALOT of times. However, no matter how much you or anyone else talk about, even for nights and weeks, there isnt really thing that anyone can do about it.
Admit it, so what if they are doing piracy? Wouldnt the police be after them already? Why dont you talk about Magic Wand, for another example, for their pirated discs and magic videos. I believe that is much more serious, than Castle's issue. Oh, I do hope that you're not like bias against Castle or something like that.
Keep complaining that Street Magic is teaching Healed and Sealed Soda for $25, and the money doesnt even goes to its creators. So what, are they gonna stop teaching all the tricks that does not belong to them, tomorrow? Probably not even after 10 years.
I'm not gonna continue typing another page of essay, because I know its not worth my time, and if I continue any longer, this wouldnt get to anywhere either. I hope this would be the last time that the issue of "Magic Castle" and "Piracy" be linked together; unless one day they sell pirated discs like Magic Wand. Haha.
Oh, and they are gonna sell neither "The Lean" nor "Head off Body" for $25; I said less than $150.
Peace. :P
Jeremy - September 20, 2005 01:01 PM (GMT)
yeah, but still. SGD150 is still very very cheap compared to USD650 don't you think?
i think wei ping and co. should actually get permission from the original creators of the effect.
Or, at least, notify them about it. i'm sure it'd be less confusing than finding the creator of DLs right?
nicky - September 20, 2005 04:03 PM (GMT)
wah.. finding de original creator of de DL.. any ideas? lol

dtjk was saying the Head of Body trick.
well, if they happen to watch the video and come up with their very own way of doin, why not?
getting permission from creator? hmm sounds logical here, but i think its not easy to do that? maybe it sounds easy to you. do u guys who perform Madonnas etc actually ask the Bucks for permission? (refering to those who done own The System)..i mean, its so contridicting?
exohordon - September 20, 2005 06:43 PM (GMT)
Marketed effects and utility moves are 2 different issues.
If you were to see the videos posted by SMC's flourishers , they credit the proper people with the moves as much as they can.
Utility moves or sleights are learnt either from videos or books. If you did not buy the materials but learnt it from someone else, no one has control over that.
On the other hand, if you were to market an effect and someone was to copy it and sold it at a lower price, that would be considered as stealing.
Methods can be based on the same principle but to take everything wholesale and treat it as a different product, that's theft.
George Robinson of Viking Manufacturing and Collectors Workshop had an effect "Card on Seat". Recently, another magician by the name of Greg Gleason marketed an effect "Sitting on It" and the mechanics were pretty much the same. This caused a stir until Gleason cleared things up.
You see, sometimes things do matter as there are copyright issues involved.
Its illogical to say you have to ask the Bucks for permission before you do their moves. Its like saying I bought Daniel Garcia's Dvds and I have to seek permission before performing his effects.
By buying the dvds (if you do buy them), it gives you the knowledge and the invisible rights to perform the effects. When a magician for e.g Greg Wilson was to release a dvd set. In the dvd, it wants to includes effects or moves not by him. In such instances, he will seek permission from the creator first and later credits him/her in the dvd.
If you were to buy a board game say Monopoly, do you actually seek the Parker Brothers' permission before playing? Anyway that's straying off.
Seeking permission ain't that hard in the first place. For starters, there is always something known as email.
I hope that wakes up your idea pph3cy. Don't start your post being firm and try to end confused. That irritates people well as least for me that is.

Good one Exohordon
You know why they all think its okay? Its becos the way they were taught magic.
Magic has become a cheap trade. Intellectual theft doesnt mean anything to them, its wrong, its ripping people off their hard work. There is no justification for doing so.
nicky - September 21, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
yeah.. if only magic was taught thru a teacher to his student or disciple..

Not neccessarily, I don't have a teacher. Most of us are self-taught, we learn it the hard way.
nicky - September 21, 2005 12:38 PM (GMT)
tt's why magic is so common nowadays.. it is so easily accessible and anyone can learn it as long as he has cash to spare.. through a teacher-student method.. only people who are passionate about the art are taught the secrets n tricks to performing magic.. just a fantasy anyway.. there is no way we can change the way things are now..
shooyu - September 21, 2005 12:41 PM (GMT)
haha, quite true.. penguin magic videos can be found free for downloads on the internet, provided you know how to find em. and they are not just very simple tricks, the effects are not bad.... :P
Jeremy - September 21, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
yeah, really hard. oh yeah pph3ry&#*(@!&#(*!&@#...
"well, if they happen to watch the video and come up with their very own way of doin, why not?"
By 'permission', i meant, the permission to SELL the effect, not to perform the effect., <_< I mean, if you figured out how david copperfield flies and all, i'm sure he can't stop you from doing it, but he definitely can sue you if you sell it away because whatever it is, you didn't CREATE it.
 piece.

Yeah right <_< . You will be a magician if you have $25 to spare.

Sad but true. Piracy is more rampant than you can imagine.
Does anyone feel guilty when you have just heard the latest radio hits you downloaded illegally? Or when you buy a pirated movie at $2 at a Pasar Malam? Everyone's guilty of it. And come on...I would really want to hear of someone in SMC who hasn't watched a pirated vid before.
So because we're no saints ourselves, I think it's time we stopped bitching on who's ripping who off. Lots of these people out there see this as a business, and revenue = money = respect to some. As long as we do not advocate nor practice this within the forums, what happens outside SMC is seriously not within control.
If a guy comes up with a head-popping illusion where he rips his ass off and restores it (sold for $10,000) and let's say for example a local magic shop called Magic Fortress figured out a way to do the same damn thing and decides to market the blueprints for 10 bucks, what are you gonna do about it? Gripe and moan? Or will you be nice and help engage a lawyer for the first rightful inventor?
Realistically, in a forum, we can only stress that such behaviour is unethical. This is to forge the right mentality to respect the art.
However, we're all still guilty of it. So before we start pointing fingers, remember the choice still depends on you.
1. Are you a faithful consumer or pirate supporter?
Another way of looking at it is:
2. Are you an extravagant spender or cost-conscious buyer?
Many of these scenarios of thought will arise in one situation. Look at it this way and ironically, there isn't any right or wrong, there's only a reason for choice.
Sorry, but I'm not feeling very sane today.
LarryDK - September 25, 2005 02:23 PM (GMT)
Well, in the end. It is the end users that are to be responsible. With all the words spoken or written down here. I feel that all of us, AS MAGICIANS, should be responsible and not giving in to piracy. Even though it might sound tempting.
In the end, support the creators, and in future, maybe, someone will support u if u create some thing. :)
As for the chopstick magic, it was well done. Its all on the presentation. Most of us will figure it out how it was done. But he did it so well that it looks so believing. This shows how much research he done.
As for the bottle thing, the dropping part still okie, but the changing back to the paper is a OH MY GOD! But seriously, i like it when in the bus or train, u do this kind of thing to people, it will be damn corny. But if i am u, i wont try that in singapore, believe me, someone will juz spank ur face and wake u up. Haha!! And u need a Yeo's Green Tea to do the magic. Haha!!
BuaYa - September 25, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
Blah blah blah. This is getting old. You guys need to understand that you won't be able to convice piracy supporters to stop supporting piracy and anti-piracy people to support piracy. Stop getting on each other's cases and do something more productive.
Like... Practicing that tilt, bluffpass or maybe even the double lift that half of you can't do properly.
