in my opinon, the best is to get a professional magician to teach, tutor, coach and mentor you and give you tips on improving your magic. Next would be getting books and videos and learning stuff yourself. Do not join a magic club in the hope of learning tricks, thats not the purpose of magic clubs.

To me having mentor to teach is the best.

i think of course the best is to have a group of frens that are interested and loyal to the art of magic too. having someone to guide u is also good. Unfortunately... for me.. im a lonely magician... coz i dunno anyone who does the art. i perform to my frens and all.. alot of them wanna learn just for fun and its like i dowan to share with them coz i know they are not genuine and they may reveal secrets to others... so i always see their interest and see if they have the potential to be good magicians. I mainly learn my magic from magic vids... even though i started with books. i think vids are great coz u can see how its done and its easier to undestand the sleights better.

There probably isn't a 'best' method, as everyone will have their own preferences.
It depends on the individual (and budget) I suppose.
And also, each method would have its own pros and cons For example, books are usually cheaper than DVDs, and they usually have quite a lot of effects in it. However, they may not explain the workings of the effects as clearly as a DVD.

yea, preference is defintely personal. hence the name?
i read this post as asking what we feel are the best methods, but not defining the best methods.
actually, after 0.5 years from my prev post here, i have changed my stance.
i feel that if there is enough time/commitment/energy, books are the best for anyone. lots of info, cheap, allows more space for personal touches, and builds up a strong foundation. but magic literature is often rather hard to read and understand though... (but for me, finally understanding it is quite an achievement and makes one feel good!)
of course, as what renhui said, it all depends on what u want. if u want to learn lots of magic fast, its definitely learning from someone. this was my prev criteria for choosing the "best".
now, my criteria for "best" is mainly foundational and knowledge, hence the change...

I feel that one of the best, if not the best method is to engage a mentor who will really coach you in the quest of becoming a competent magician...but it is not easy to find one...and for a good mentor, he or she would also be selective in choosing students.
