Title: Hi Everyone. I'm New To Everything.
Mujunnie - October 26, 2005 05:14 AM (GMT)
Hello to all readers.
I am new to coin and card magic and stuff, but I am really keen on learning them. I only know some basic card flourishes, and maybe a few simple card magic tricks.
May I know where I can get to learn these skills and techniques, from shops, dvds, books or mentors? I don't have much savings, so I don't think I can afford for membership at a shop... I am actually more interested in learning from a book, cause the book definitely can last. :D
I've read through some of the threads in the forum, and it seems like Cineleisure Burger King on Friday is a common meeting place for sales of decks and stuff? I am looking for fanning powder and some decks for newcomers, so I hope to get some from you guys.
I'll try to absorb as much from what you guys teach!

Books.. Try Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic?

Actually, you won't be able to find someone here who will be willing to teach you for free.
Magic survived for so long because those who respect it will not let the secret out. That is the most basic part of being a good magician.
Mark Wilson's book is a very good book. I highly recommend it. Its not too expensive too. Probably about S$35. This book will keep you busy for a long time.

I was thinking about finding someone to teach me for a price, not free, cause I have read about the rules of not being able to teach on internet or for free.
So, where can I find these magic books? I can probably afford the S$35 for Mark Wilson's book, but approximately how many tricks does it teach?

Hey there...
Hmmm... I wld advise u not to learn from the books tho... coz its really hard to do it from there...especially if u're a beginner
The ideal way, wld be to join membership at Magic Castle which is at Shaw Towers in Bugis and get the teach ins there. But having said that u're very budget consciuous go and buy DVDs from our dealers here...
What to start of with... erm... Born to Perfrom? Crash Course? Crash Course 2?
Check these 2 websites out...
www.penguinmagic.com
and
www.ellusionist.com
Alternatively, if u really insist on books, u can buy it and try it and wen u haf probs juz ask us...

I recommend books. If you learn from books, you will have your own style. If you watch a dvd, you would normally try and imitate the performer.
As for that book, you can get it from Borders. If they don't have stock, get them to order, they don;t charge shipping. The book is about 300 pages (I think). Plenty of effects from coins, cards, to stage.

If this happens, some people in SMC will again start talking about originality and credits, and stuff like using other people's move to charge $$ and whatsoever.
Personally I feel that Videos are much much clearer than books, because I realised that when you're learning from books, if lets say you learn a move from words and still pictures, you MIGHT get it wrong, and you'll probably remain wrong until someone corrects it for you.
Or well, try both. :)

If the end results is obtained, it doesn't matter if you did it right or wrong. You might even create a new move.

Anyway, books are much cheaper than DVDs right? So I guess I'll get a book instead, and try to get photos or if possible, videos, to confirm if my tricks are executed correctly.
If I can impress my parents after learning from the book, and get their approval to learn magic, they may even allow me to join Magic Castle's membership..! So, I'll start with a book. Thanks for the advices~! ^_^

You can try books, if you are not sure of a move, feel free to ask for help. Just go to Magic Castle at Shaw Tower, or you can also approach us here in smc.
Peace,
Rave :D
