Title: Secrets Of Psychic Revealed
Ben - November 15, 2005 03:57 PM (GMT)
Did anyone catch a show on channel 5 on tuesday night 11pm? It's called Secrets Of Psychic Revealed. The show's aim is to expose psychics of their scams. They use terms like conman and accomplice. I know magicians are not exactly like psychics but this show is very degrading to magicians.
The show ended with this line: "Seeing is not necessarily believing once you know their secret"
MinistryOfBicycle - November 15, 2005 04:00 PM (GMT)
Yea, they didnt reveal much. But, sort of degrading to magicians. Damn..
brokenvow - November 15, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
What a relief, I catched the 2nd half of the show, glad they didn't reveal that much, I thought maybe they'd reveal alot of mentalism stuff.
Anyway, we should inform each other of what's showing on tele, so that in the case of any exposure, we'll know and refrain from doing what was revealed.
Navarrone - November 15, 2005 04:14 PM (GMT)
haha, knew someone will post something bout it after the show. Most of the things they revealed is not really practical lahz, only saw the the show bout 11.20. Saw the credits and it showed they revealing fork bending....WTF!
dtjk - November 15, 2005 04:21 PM (GMT)
I think quite sometime ago, got show something like that before. Same one?
Like put a glass on the table and it smashes into pieces by itself? Spoon breaking? Metal coil using the power of the mind to turn red hot? Talking to the death spirits?
Okay, but all are impractical. Laymen will just probably watch, and forget, like any other TV Programme.
Ben - November 15, 2005 04:25 PM (GMT)
My concern is not so much of the secrets being revealed. But rather, how layman who watches the show will perceive magicians. Even people who enjoy magic might end up as hecklers. Just my thoughts
Energywave - November 15, 2005 04:36 PM (GMT)
It is actually a repeated one. It was shown before last year.
Perhaps the good thing about this show is people can finally understand that those stuffs are actually all just tricks and the psychics don't have any special powers. The bad thing is people may not appreciate any kind of magic anymore(as what ben said) and another thing is they got the secrets for free.
And btw, magic castle is selling the cold reading for $200.
pph3cy - November 15, 2005 04:39 PM (GMT)
yea. this is the second time this show appeared on television.
I hope Mentalist or Magicians Dont feel degraded about it.
fume - November 15, 2005 05:16 PM (GMT)
it's played last year december before, the "methods" they use is basically impratical.
iNvIsIbLe - November 16, 2005 03:10 AM (GMT)
ermm...yesterday i have watched the whole show "secrets of psychic revealed". I find some parts of the show were too exaggerating..why do we need accomplice if we have other ways to read people's mind?..It was quite an insult to magicians..n mentalist....i also find the psychic performer has too many equipments which have already prepared before hand.

Yea sure, you can buy cold reading.
Is it like, a book where its frozen? What about hot reading? Mircowaved book?
Honestly, you might as well do more reading on cold readings instead of buying a cold reading.
Energywave - November 16, 2005 04:20 AM (GMT)
Oi! What is the meaning of this alexander? Yes! I admit I do not know anything about mentalism. But does that give you the right to try to insult me or look down on me? What you should have done was to tell me politely that I might as well do more readings. Must you say all this shit"Yea sure, you can buy cold reading. Is it like a book where its frozen..." Insulting your own intelligence! Why don't you go and buy! If I do not know, I can learn! Did you started as a pro? We are suppose to help each other. Would you like it if others do this on you?
If you think that you are a master at mentalism, prove it to me and everyone! If not, you might as well keep your mouth shut! Act big. Frankly, I think you are not even fit to be a magician or whatever.
I knew that not everyone in smc is as nice as what I thought. If I was too rash, please forgive as I am a very straightforward person. Anyway Alexander, I don't care who you are and don't even wish to know.
Aloy - November 16, 2005 04:51 AM (GMT)
Calm down energywave, Alex is obviously TRYING to help you there. Surely you don't expect all assistance to come in a "sayang, sayang" mode rite? ;)
Alex is pointing out how ridiculous it is to buy "cold reading". Cold reading is a classification of techniques, not an actual effect in itself.
Saying that you can buy "cold reading" is like saying you can buy "singing". Perhaps you were misinformed previously, but at least now you know right?
Nobody is insulting or humiliating you, albeit Alex did try to put it across in a humourous manner. So settle down, because today you learnt something new abt magic, so that's good right? :)
None started as a pro but all learned it one thing at a time :)
Your return assault was seriously uncalled for thou. Is there a need for such aggression over a funny comment? Alex has been helping tons of people on the forum for a while now, and has surely given good and educated advice to many, and at the same time proving it in performances. Surely there is no need to get petty and abrasive about this.
I thought a gentlemen apology is in order here, but it's all up to you B)
LarryDK - November 16, 2005 05:16 AM (GMT)
Aloy was faster than me. Oh nevermind.
Anyway, the show is a crap, i originally thought that they are showing the actual secrets of some of the effect. Ya some is done that way, but alot, with the assistants are simply useless. Alot of mentalist dun use assistant because the effect is much more strongly that way.
Well, Pam have disappear for some time, due to his tight working schedule. But if anyone of you that reply here, i think onli me, aloy, alexander have witness alot of Pam's performance, have seen Pam's mind reading, you will freak out, because there is no way that he can read mind with back facing you, u did something very naturally and no assistant.
And dun worry about the spoon bending, it is very different from the actual effect on market or taught. Hmm, but the thing that you can learn about this show is the pyschology that the magicians put in to make the audiences follow through them, and believing each thing that they say. So observe their presentation, it is always good that whenever you do magic, the audience are following you and listening to you.
As for Energywave, dun be so hot headed, alex is super nice, even though he is very tall, and he tell you his view abt the magic you did, if he ever saw it. He is very humble one and the words that he said abt the cold reading is a joke, because cold reading like wat aloy said, is a book about it, its not an effect. hmm very close to the pyscology of mind reading. thats y it cost so expensive.
Anyway, cool out people.

I got this book from Ian Rowlands call "The full fact book of Cold Reading" and it is cool. Its avaliable at his webby and its reviewed by many as the best in the market on this subject which i totally agreed.
Its a lot of psychology and methods in talking to ppl and making them believing that you can actually read them like a book. But reading the book won't make u a cold reader.. u need to experiment and suit the methods to different ppl in different situation.
I did tried out one of the method suggested in the book during my reservist just 2 mths ago on a totally stranger in my platoon. Hell it works and he was shocked!! thinking i was a fortune teller or something as he kinda of believe in these stuffs.
Its magic using sleights of Mouth when u have no coins, no cards, no rubberbands, no gimmicks/ props to perform. :g:
Markiebeth - November 16, 2005 12:36 PM (GMT)
LOL, finally something about cold reading has been started eh. Well for people who are into cold reading or the likes, can discuss with me, I for one have been studying it on my own for quite some time already. And Castle markets it for $200? Didn't know of such a thing, hmmm...

Hello Energywave,
I hope you do understand that i wasnt directing that post at you. But more at castle.
I'm not a mentalist. I'm not professional. But, cold reading, it cant be just taught thru verbal teaching and like other kind of genre in magic like sleight of hand which can be shown.
I do admit i was sarcastic in that post, but it wasnt directed at you, honestly. I'm sorry if you're offended in anyway.
http://skepdic.com/coldread.htmlThere are several books out there on cold reading, its better to read than to be taught verbally. Do you know why? Cold reading is rather general. If you just follow exactly as taught, it will seem like you're reading from a script, and secondly, you're saying exactly what other people are saying.
Well, again, like i said, i dont see how i was insulting you.
