Title: Wanna Buy Doves
Description: Pigeons are too fat
Moondust - December 1, 2005 04:33 PM (GMT)
Hey guys.
I would like to practice dove magic. Problem is, I've spoke to Cynwell a while back and he told me that he had searched every conceivable pet store in Singapore and no one keeps doves in stock.
If this is the case, does anyone know of any pet / bird lovers' shop who is willing to import doves in at a good price? I wouldn't need any additional supplies because I can get the bird feed, grit and all the necessary vitamins, respiratiry antibiotics and stuff myself. I just need a place who can get me the birds. I would like to buy about 3 or 4 doves.
Anybody can help?

quite a few folks have temporarily stopped doing dove magic due to the bird flu going around. Are you sure you really wanna do this at this time?

Honestly, that is something that never crossed my mind. Thanks for the reminder.
Well, I may not wanna do this right now, but the point is, I need someone who's willing to import them in for me. I can always place my order at a later date.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried
Goodwill trading?
Good luck

Maybe you should just wait till the bird flu thing is over before considering.
They'll probably be importing them again.

I think Tay hit the nail on the head. Its probably too much hassle with the relevant health authorities to import doves now so they stores are not bringing any in. Wait a bit and then see how.

Maybe you should think out of the box? :D
Importing the dove is a hassle, and further more if some dealers are wlling to take in for you it might be very expensive and also it is not a life time investment, one fine day, the dove will eventually die and you got to import the expensive dove again.
So why not you customize the props, which can last you a life time, and squeeze the big fat pigeon in? ;)
Just a idea that came across my mind :)

Bro, pigeons are definitely out of the question, really. Consider using a twin invisible harness for 2 doves...if I do the same for pigeons, the tummy area is gonna look too suspicious. Moreover, I'm no aviary expert. While I know that the harness will work well on a dove with not much stress on them, I can't guarantee that pigeons will react the same way.
Also, another flash method of producing a flying dove will be to use sl*****g. This technique cannot be applied to pigeons simply because they are too fidgety and once again, too fat.
Cost effectiveness is an issue, and I'm not contemplating buying doves on impulse. Well I can always buy a parrot and still do bird productions, but ultimately I'll kill myself on maintenance. Plus, I don't have space for the bird. Doves on the other hand, can live happily in a modified carry kennel for dogs as long as they have perches to keep their feet healthy. I don't have a garden to give the parrot what's best for its growth.
While dove magic is costly, time-consuming and troublesome at this point of time, using other birds will not make much of a difference in cost and yet it will not be easy buying magician's holders and harnesses suited for other birds. Not that I refuse to think "out of the box," but I have a monetary threshold to consider. As long as import costs are not exceedingly high, this is one area of magic I would love to explore.

err... i am not much of a stage guy.. but you could try sparrows? just explain that that is a new marketing technique for you... well that beats my original idea of suggesting cardboard doves... :P

Hi
Dove magic is indeed a hassle.
However it is also a very classic performance and very classy act.
ALL birds can be used in magic, it is a matter of how they are being used.
Doves are used because of their peaceful and quiet nature.
Magic of Love has used cockatoos in their show. It is as powerful as the doves.
Animal Magic are amongst the hardest and difficult magic because no one can predict what a living thing can do next. The animals got a brain on their own.
Working with bigger animals require even greater training.
