Title: How Far Will You Go To Perfect Harder Tricks?
Description: Discussion

Hi All,
This is something that I have been thinking of. We buy tricks and watch video or read books. We know the secret and we even get good guidance from peers or videos. But sometimes it is just not easy to get the hang of the new trick may it be in the sleight or the patter etc.
So how far will you all go to perfect a trick? Or will you just try to select simple tricks to perform? Example: Will you go all out to learn the Betram Color Change or just perfect a simpler Erdnase color change.
Regards,
Magic Performer

For me, i will do tricks that give good effect, if the magic require difficult handling but gives good effect, i will still go for it and practice it hard. No pint practicing something that is very difficult and you could just do another easier tricks with better response from the audience. :D

You should always perfect a trick before showing anyone. Hmm to what extent, I think it would be making sure it's clean before and after, angles are well managed and presentable. I feel the level of practise you should give to each trick should be equal, no matter easy or difficult. I mean come on simple tricks are devastating as well. Again, "perfecting" is subjective, so I guess you should practise them till you get "wows" from your audience.

Practice makes perfect.... No effects are too hard nor easy all need to take some amount of practice to get a hang of it...

I mastered the Erdnase color change in less than a minute.
So I guess the minute spent practising my bertram change will be sufficient.
Thanks for the great advice!
Anyway he's asking if you would bother to master a difficult trick when a simpler trick would suffice. I don't think any of your answered him except maybe Lefty.
I say I'd master any tricks if I like it no matter the difficulty level.

well, practice doesn't makes perfect...perfect practice makes perfect.
some people only performs effect that they think its visual to audience. some people practice only difficult sleight of hand because of self-satisfactory.
some people cannot be bothered to practice difficult effects.
i mean, its personal preference.
if its sleight of hand magic, I'll definitely practice til perfection, doesn't matter the time and effort spent.

Guys the topic remains at 'How Far Will You Go To Perfect Harder Tricks'. Let's stick to that k?
Well personally it all depends on how good a reaction the effect brings about. If it creates a huge impact than definitely I will put in effort to make sure that it is done flawlessly or at least close to flawless.
The converse would of course be true too. An effect may be extremely hard to execute but if it does not bring about a good enough impact, I would certainly leave it out.
I suppose the most important thing which many people do not give much thought to would be the fact that it is the simpler, easier effects that normally pack huge reactions.
2cents worth :)

thanks for noticing that i'm good. thanks for NOT noticing that I was being sarcastic. obviously I'd have to spend more time with the bertram change than the erdnase change. duh!
I don't like to perform in SP. It's my personal preference. Especially to your friend. He looks like a magician to me. I find performing for another magician silly unless I can fool him.

P.S.- to keep this not off-topic:
If you think the effect is worth all the trouble you have to go through to perfect it, then go for it.

People often mistake the word "master" with "can do". Heh...
I'm working on Kosby's Raise Rise. This one's a bitch. I'd go as far as to mastering it.

I think it's important to perfect every trick before you perform. Even for gimmicks. Besides mastering of sleights, it's also important to plan your patter.

i'll do anything to "perfect" an illusion... IF i like it.
so for your specific example, i'd rather do the erdnase colour change than the bertram change, because, i don't like the betram at all. And now, i'm obsessed with the ego change.
It really depends on your passion for that particular move.

I feel that a factor in deciding whether or not to perfect an effect, is whether you wish to use it. To me, methods are irrelevant. If I want to use an effect for my work, I will ensure that it's of the level that I am satisfied with for myself. And those who know me will know that I set high standards and will not tolerate sub-standards of any kind.
So yes, like many of you have said, if I like the effect, I will do anything and do as much as it takes before I even perform it. It is a given that if you perform at all, that should be the way - your audiences have every right to deserve that.

Thank you so much for the replies. I have to concur with the fact that we perform tricks with different intentions. Some love to learn hard to do sleights for their own satisfaction. Some are audience-orientated who loves to perform impactful tricks which can be much easier to master.
My intention of the post was originally to find out more on how determined we are. Put it simply. Say out of ten people how many will go ahead to master say a Betram Change and how many will just give it up half way or perhaps give it up after knowing the secret.
There are more and more magicians in singapore. Hobbyist or semi professional. From a wider perspective i just want to get a feel of how serious or convicted we are a magicians. Are we working hard or hardly working. Are we just a bunch of people who just use money to buy secrets and claims that we know a trick.
Very good points there people. i have good insight from ur posts.
